Spring’s all around us now, don’t you think? With waves of cherry blossoms still appearing on our Instagram feeds, flowers blooming at unsuspecting street corners as you stumble past them on your daily commute, or as floral motifs and pastel shades start making their way to the front of our wardrobes, you can’t deny the dawn of the new season. Oh, we’ll admit it — no matter how predictable the moment is, Spring’s just way too irresistible. So how about embracing it then?
If you’d like to smell like Spring while imagining yourself rolling in fields of green grass, we’ve got just the scent for you, the aptly-named Coach Floral. Just take a look at how perfectly campaign girl, actress Chloë Grace Moretz, embodies the feminine fragrance — dressed in a soft floral dress and looking like a dream while frolicking about wildflowers.
It’s tough to tell the story of a fragrance with just visuals, but even in just a couple of frames, fashion photographer Steven Meisel manages to precisely sum up the beauty of Coach’s new scent: it’s a romantic take on fresh florals, the kind that recalls carefree wandering about sunlit fields, and yet, with a dreamy sense of nostalgia that brings us back to simpler times.
THE INSPIRATION
From the pink bottle to the fragrance’s floral notes, the Coach Floral is undeniably feminine, and no wonder — it takes its inspiration from the signature Tea Roses that appear on the fashion house’s leather bags and accessories. With the vision of Coach’s Creative Director Stuart Vevers, the artfully arranged burst of flower appliqués, as we know and love them, first appeared on the runway in Spring 2016, both to herald the arrival of the season and to celebrate Coach’s expert craftsmanship. These are hand-stitched, and created with smooth leather and intricate detailing — plus, they’ve proven so popular that we’ve seen multiple iterations of them since, across clutches, slings and tote bags.
In the same way, much thought has also been put into crafting this perfect Spring fragrance. Moretz was cast as the muse, mostly because Vevers found her an ideal balance of independence and dreaminess, and as seen in the campaign visuals too, she seems to exude an effortless beauty that we all immediately want to embody too. And then, there’s the perfectly balanced scent, delicate, yet bold in its daring display of femininity.
THE SCENT
You’ll get that same whimsical feeling with just a whiff of the Coach Floral fragrance; close your eyes, and you can imagine being whisked away to the carefree countryside. What you’ll first be greeted by is a refreshing fruity floral scent, one that’s welcoming and not at all cloying — we can’t imagine anyone finding this unappealing. It’s light, it’s airy, and pleasant, before drying down into a base of wood, patchouli and musk that feels like a warm embrace.
“With Coach Floral, we wanted to create a positive and uplifting scent. It’s inspired by our signature Tea Rose and evokes the lightness of spring and summer,” says Creative Director Stuart Vevers.
For that refreshing opening, we get a fruity splash of Citrus Coeur, Pineapple Sorbet and Pink Peppercorn, which give the fragrance its bright, radiant top notes; it seems to sing like the first rays of sunlight. This then evolves into its floral heart, a fresh bouquet that’s straight out of a flower market — Rose Tea, Jasmine Sambac and Gardenia combine to give off luminous, feminine notes that are immediately familiar and comforting. Of course, this is later enveloped by an elegant trio of Crystal Musk, Creamy Wood and Patchouli Essence, again, comfortable, warm and appealing.
THE BOTTLE
This will be a dressing table staple in no time. The design codes are similar to Coach’s previous signature EDP and EDT fragrances, with an oval bottle that pays tribute to Coach’s well-loved icons — the turnlock-shaped spray cap and the recognisable symbol of a horse and carriage, lightly embossed on the glass.
What’s now updated though are the rose-gold metallic accents in the spray cap and hangtag, fitting for the feminine floral scent, while also being very in-season. This is topped off by the Tea Rose charm, in a pale pink leather that reminds us of its very inspiration in the first place — the precise craftsmanship that goes into any Coach bag from the Tea Rose collection, and the precise thought that went into this heavenly Spring scent.
