Premium luggage brand RIMOWA might have been around for over a hundred years, but they remain as relevant as ever. To celebrate their 120th anniversary, the brand is changing their visual identity, redesigning their iconic aluminium truck, and most importantly, working with the latest It-name in fashion.
And that name is Virgil Abloh, the designer who has created a buzz for himself with his slew of high-profile collaborations—from the charmingly quiet Elevator Music capsule to the Nike World Cup collection. RIMOWA, together with Abloh’s streetwear arm Off-White, revealed yesterday this eye-catching design of a luggage that’ll certainly make you take a double-take. Dubbed as the RIMOWA X OFF-WHITE case, this luggage features a completely transparent design with no interior lining.
The see-through hard case will come fitted with black detailing, a multi-wheel system, combination locks, and an exclusive amenity kit containing an extra set of orange wheels for that bright pop of colour.
On the unique, maybe even questionable, choice of transparency, the press release noted that it is “a brazen, yet playful response to today’s obsessive talk of privacy culture”. Indeed, you’ll need to be careful of the things you pack when using a suitcase like this.
Apart from prying eyes, this suitcase will also set you back €850, or around $1,320. For the savvy traveller, that might be even more than the price of a roundtrip ticket to Europe.
If you’re not that keen on showing your baggage to the rest of the world, the RIMOWA X OFF-WHITE case will come with a removable black organiser with the word “MISCELLANEOUS” emblazoned throughout.
RIMOWA will also have three updated collections to choose from. Notably, the new cases will spot an aluminium badge engraved with the brand’s logo, with a new wheel design with RIMOWA’s fresh monogram.
The RIMOWA X OFF-WHITE case will premiere on 20 June at the Off-White’s men fashion show in Paris. It’ll only be available for purchase from 25 June in selected RIMOWA and Off-White stores, RIMOWA Europe’s online site, and a pop-up store on WeChat.
The rest of the new RIMOWA collection will be available in June at RIMOWA Europe stores but do look out for the release on their website in the coming weeks.
