The Lunar New Year is just a little over a week away, so if you haven’t been busy with shopping for outfits, snacks and drinks, well, what are you waiting for?! This year, take a trip back in time and relive fonder memories of yesteryears with two very nostalgic beverages. Pokka, Asia Pacific’s leading food and beverage group, has gone all out to put a retro spin on two of our favourite classic ready-to-drink beverages. Besides, it’ll be an interesting topic to talk about with your younger relatives while sipping on a distinctive and memorable flavour.
Kickapoo Joy Juice was a popular drink in Singapore, and was actually based on the same drink that the characters of American comic strip “Lil Abner” would consume. The cave dwelling characters Lonesome Polecat and Hairless Joe lived in a fictional village of Dogpatch and created the drink. It was supposedly a liquor with such stupefying potency that the citizens of DOgpatch would rise into the air after the first burning sip, stiff as a frozen codfish. Of course this isn’t the Joy Juice we’ve all come to know as a newer version was produced by Monarch Beverage of Atlanta (with Singapore and Malaysia being the lead countries of course) and launched in 1966. Sinalco special on the other hand, was this unique composition made with four different fruit flavours to create a unique taste and packaged in a unmistakeable pink can; definitely one that has been truly missed by Singaporeans.
Sinalco, a combination of the Latin words sine alcohole (meaning “without alcohol” in English), was established in 1905 and is the oldest non-alcoholic beverage brand of continental European origin that was exported to more than 150 countries. The introduction of this brand in Singapore marks a special moment in its 111 years in history after having found a new partner in Pokka.
Both drinks will be highlighted by limited edition anniversary designs of cans and bottles with a unique retrostyling, and will be available at most major supermarkets, hypermarkets and coffee shops across Singapore. Who knows, we may even see the return of Anything and Whatever (remember those?).
