It’s a shame, really, that liquid lipsticks aren’t a bigger thing here. We attribute it to the whole Western makeup vs. Asian makeup battle – Korean ombre lips and light glosses just sit better over matte lips in this tropical heat! But if you’re getting just a little tired of the same old safe, sheer pinks, take a bold leap onto the matte liquid lipstick bandwagon with these five great starter lippies – that you don’t have to pay international shipping for (sorry Colourpop).
NYX Soft Matte Lip Crème, $13
This baby should need no introduction. The NYX Soft Matte Lip Crèmes have been a hit since their first release, thanks to the light and easy formula that goes on smoothly and dries in a yummy satin-matte finish. If you’re afraid of jumping right into liquid lipstick, these lip crèmes are a friendly first step forward that won’t feel any less comfortable than your regular cream lipsticks. Plus, being named after big cities makes them more fun to purchase too!

L.A. Girl Matte Pigment Gloss, $17.90
If anything, the word ‘Gloss’ should be a form of reassurance to some of you – even though the lipstick still dries pretty matte. The great thing about liquid lipsticks is that you can build to a darker, more opaque look depending on what you’re comfortable with, which is what makes lighter formulas like the Matte Pigment Gloss a versatile staple to have in your kit.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet, $25
Completely matte without being too heavy – what’s not to love? A little pricey, but this French brand has got us head-over-heels in love with its light consistency and hydrating feel.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick, $19
Don’t blame us for deviating back to this brand; NYX really knows how to serve up a good liquid lipstick at affordable prices. The Liquid Suedes are one step up from the Lip Crèmes – a little more matte without compensating on the same moisturising feel. Tip: If you are feeling brave enough for a more matte finish, dust some loose powder over the dried lip to take away any lingering shine!

theBalm Meet Matt(e) Hughes, $36.90
If you couldn’t tell, we’re already sold on the packaging. But what we really love about these liquid lippies is the long-lasting matte finish that still feels comfortable to wear after a long day – perfect if you feel like you’re ready for a drier, more precise matte lip.

Sephora Cream Lip Stain, $24
We have a winner! A comfy, mousse-y texture paired with insane pigmentation, this lip stain is what liquid lipstick dreams are made of. We love how the colour goes on so richly and becomes crazy matte almost instantly; and the fact that it doesn’t budge even through meals makes it a godsend. We dare you to devour three greasy burgers with this bad boy on.
