It all started from a humble South Australian sheep – this fluffy creature was where Kirsten Carriol got the inspiration to start her beauty brand Lano, made up of a compact collection of skincare products that derive their highly moisturising properties from – you guessed it – the stuff that excretes from sheep’s pores.
We don’t blame you if you’re feeling a bit grossed out by the idea of smearing sheep skin excretions on your face, but stay with us on this. The lanolin that Carriol uses in her products is of an ultra-pure medical grade, untainted by non-natural substances like genetically-modified foods and pesticides in the sheep’s feed; and of course, the company makes sure it goes through a patented and highly specialised cleansing process before it’s added to the formulations.
The magic of lanolin is in how its molecular structure is similar to that of human skin lipids (the natural oils produced by your skin), so its highly compatible with the body. Its moisturising abilities are also proven in how its able to hold up to four times its weight in moisture.
Carriol started off with the Lanolips Original 101 Ointment, a multipurpose balm that she created to be used on extremely chapped lips, patches of dry skin, parched cuticles, and so on. If you need to take the hydration up a notch, the Golden Dry Skin Salve is labelled “super intense” for how it has quadruple the amount of lanolin compared to the regular versions, so we’d use this when we’re in a cold and dry climate, or for problem areas of the skin. There are also flavoured lip treatments like the Banana Balm Lip Sheen 3-In-1 that leaves a layer of lustre on the lips, and the Lemonaid Lip Treatment, which treats very dry lips with organic lemon oil that acts as a natural exfoliator.
