*GASP* Last night, we were losing our shit when they released a teaser trailer for today’s official trailer. And now, it’s finally here, in all its glory. By the looks of things, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story seems to be taking a very different approach to the rejuvenated sci-fi saga. This is the first of many planned spin-off movies that’s supposedly set just before the events of the original film (before Episode IV: A New Hope but after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith). Obviously this will be taken in the perspective of the rebellion and will probably not have a heavy Jedi presence (maybe Darth Vader might make an appearance, maybe not). Taking the lead from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One also features a diverse cast with a female lead (Felicity Jones) and a supporting cast consisting of Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelssohn, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Jonathan Aris and Riz Ahmed.
So what’s the potential plot line here? Well, if you’re familiar with the Star Wars films you might’ve already figured it out even before the trailer was released. Remember how A New Hope started out? The rebellion (aka Princess Leia) already had the stolen Death Star plans, which she passed to R2-D2, setting in motion the original trilogy. Even with the “prequel trilogy” before it, we still don’t know how Leia managed to get her hands on those plans.
Now, back to the trailer. Felicity Jones, who plays a character named Jynn Ersa (or something like that), has been given a mission to find out about a mission test (cut scene to the Death Star) and how they can destroy it. She’s probably been tasked to steal the Death Star plans, and with that kind of fiesty attitude, she’s probably their best bet. Enter super sinister villain in white (we really want to know who this is), AT-ATs and Stormtroopers (some new designs too!).
