Joan Cornella: A Solo Exhibition
It doesn’t take an art buff to know Joan Cornella – and even if you don’t, you’ll definitely recongise his Internet-viral cartoons. Based in Barcelona, the Spanish cartoonist/illustrator is well known for his wordless, brightly coloured six-panel comics; especially when they deceptively hold snarky social commentary and surreal humour. This weekend, Symmetry Entertainment and THE ARTBISHOP are coming together to present Joan Cornella’s debut solo exhibition in Singapore – his only stop in Southeast Asia, given the exhibition will be held exclusively in Hong Kong and Singapore. If you’re a hardcore fan, there are still a few tickets left for a signing session on 25 June (available here) where you’ll get to meet the man himself. The exhibition’s a short run of 10 days only, so be sure to pop by for an up-close-and-personal experience with the cartoonist’s best works; and pick up some originals, limited edition prints and souvenirs while you’re there.

Baybeats 2016
It’s that time of year again; Singapore’s favourite annual alternative music festival Baybeats is back, and ready to showcase the best of local and international acts for three days straight. Featuring 36 bands, the festival will feature everything from post-rock to punk to folk – along with many other unique genres, we’re sure. Look out for local singer-songwriter Nicholas Chim, or bang out to homegrown rock band Cashew Chemists, who recently had a proud stint at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival Singapore.

Nyonya Needlework: Embroidery and Beadwork in the Peranakan World
If you’re one for pretty little things, prepare to be indulged by the massive selection of beads, silk, and metallic threads on display at the Peranakan Museum; millions, to be exact. In the museum’s latest exhibition, it’s all about celebrating the beauty of the traditional Peranakan art of embroidery and beadwork, with almost 200 intricately handcrafted artworks telling the intriguing story of the Peranakan Chinese.
The showcase will also display some of the earliest dated embroidered and beaded objects in the world. Particularly, keep your eyes peeled for one of the key highlights – a beaded wedding bed valence from the National Museum of World Cultures in the Netherlands; also the earliest reliably dated embroidery on display, with roots dating back to 1848 in Indonesia. Divided into five sections ranging from auspicious emblems and symbols, to materials, to the makers and their methods, the show will explore the diverse styles of Indonesia, Malacca, Singapore and Penang, so there’s definitely something for everyone – even if you don’t have a little Nyonya blood in you.
