Over the weekend, a storm of Star Wars related news was released, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t struggle to remain calm enough to compile all the information in this post. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens still fresh in everyone’s minds – we’re still nursing some emotional wounds too, to be honest – any news about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is welcome to help keep the burgeoning questions at bay…for now, at least.
So over the weekend, the Star Wars team held Star Wars Celebration Europe, including a panel with the film’s cast and crew, as well as new behind-the-scenes footage (as you can see above) and of course, a brand new trailer. The new trailer also features the new jungle planet known as Scarif; it’s the one that can be seen in the new poster, too.
You can also catch a brief glimpse of the new droid, K-2SO, who looks like a slightly more deadly and angst-ridden version of C-3PO, although he appears to be one of the good guys. Keen eyes can probably spot the major difference between the two droids from the get-go: only K-2SO is created with CGI. Ben Mendhelson, who plays Director Krennick of the Advanced Weapons Research for the Empire, kept things pretty hush-hush about what exactly to make of his character, but he definitely proved that Krennick isn’t here to make friends.
There was also (finally!) news about the new Han Solo. Actor Alden Ehrenreich – who’s previous works include Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro and Twixt, Beautiful Creatures and Hail, Caesar! – has been cast as the pilot of the Millennium Falcon and Chewbacca’s best friend (don’t fight us on this). It was also announced that Han Solo will get his own film (yes, a “Solo” film, if you will), set to be directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord. The directors themselves have handled action-comedy films like 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, so we have high hopes for this one.
Of course, Star Wars Episode VIII is still in the works, which means that things over in that camp have been kept under wraps thus far (we can’t imagine any major spoilers being leaked this early, anyway). There’s also been news of what to expect in the new Star Wars Rebels season (potential spoiler alert), as well as information about updates to the EA’s Star Wars shooter Battlefront.
One thing’s for sure though: we’ve definitely got our calendars marked for more intergalactic mayhem.
