Good news if you’re a Pokémon fan. Nintendo is planning to release its highly anticipated Sun & Moon series on 18 November 2016 for the 3DS, and gamers can expect a whole raft of exciting features to come with the games.
For instance, there’ll be 150 new Pokémon to catch in the “Alola Region”, an area that is not so subtly based off Hawaii. As players embark on their quest to become the very best, they’ll have to face Island Challenges, Trials and Totem Pokémon, which marks a major shift from the traditional formula of facing Gym Leaders, a format that has proven so successful in the past.
What caught our attention though, was the announcement that some members of the original 150 Pokémon have new Alola forms, with some of them being completely different types! Here’s the ones we know about so far:
Raichu
Raichu gets a massive revamp in Sun & Moon; with an additional Psychic typing that allows it to float in the air on its tail. Its new ability – Surge Surfer – also gives it double the speed on electric terrains.
Marowak
The Alolan Marowak are a hybrid of Fire/Ghost, having adapted to their environments by changing from their usual Ground-type forms to protect themselves against Grass Pokémon, which happen to be very common in Alola.
Meowth
Meowth were never indigenous Pokémon of the Alola Region. Instead, they were given to royal families as extravagant gifts, with their life of luxury and indulgence making them self-centred, eventually causing them to change types from Normal to Dark.
Exeggutor
With an additional head on its tail, and an extra long neck, the Alolan Exeggutor is a whole lot more freaky than the ones we’re used to seeing. However, the Alolan people are proud of their Exeggutor, and they claim that the Alolan Exeggutor is Exeggutor’s true form. The Alolan Exeggutor is part grass, part dragon.
Sandshrew
In most Pokémon regions, Sandshrew is a Ground-type, but the Alolan Sandshrew is a mix of Ice and Steel. Why? Well, Sandshrew are primarily desert dwellers, but volcano eruptions forced them to find a new home in the Alolan Snow Mountains, where they changed their entire genetic makeup in order to survive.
Sandslash
The Alolan Sandslash keep the Ice/Steel typing when they evolve from Sandshrew, with protruding ice needles covering the length of their back. While they may be slower than normal Sandslash due to their icy body’s heaviness, they are extremely quick in snowfields and on ice terrains.
Vulpix
Originally a fire type, Vulpix moved to snow mountains to get away from other Pokémon, and they ended up taking on an ice form. The Alolan Vulpix is able to freeze anything solid with its breath of – 50°c, while it can also lower the surrounding environment’s temperature by dispersing ice particles from its tail.
Ninetales
When the Alolan Vulpix evolve to Ninetales, they take on additional fairy typing to become Ice/Fairy. These Pokémon are looked upon as sacred by the Alolan people, and in addition to being extremely beautiful, they can be supremely ferocious too, with their ability to fire bullet-like balls of ice at enemies.
