Fact: We love outerwear. Another fact: Singapore weather is not made for outerwear. So it usually means either never letting all our beloved jackets and sweaters see the light of day, or taking the brave leap to wear them out, and then slowly melting into a puddle in the afternoon sun, while wrapped up in all our fashionable layers (times when “suffer for fashion” never rang more true).
Yet, we keep buying outerwear anyway, because it simply can’t be denied that they are a wardrobe staple, and an easy way to immediately make any outfit look more put together. So here, we want to share our latest outerwear obsession: denim jackets, and not just regular denim jackets – they must be oversized ones, because we’ve found that they offer a loose yet structured and somewhat masculine silhouette that we can contrast with a more feminine outfit underneath, or top off a tomboyish look. And most importantly, they’re super comfy.
These jackets also don’t have to be boring. Aside from the classic styles, here are some more options for a quick way to add plenty of interest to your outfit.
The classic style
Can’t go wrong with a regular denim wah. Not too dark, not too light, and with a nice lived-in look, this will go well with most outfits.
Bershka Oversize Denim Jacket, $55.90
Embroidery details
Business in the front, party at the back. Add an unexpected side to your outfit with these colourful details embroidered to the back of the jacket, complete with patterns, fringes and hardware.
Pull & Bear Oversized Denim Jacket With Embroidered Back, $139
Frayed edges
This is the kind of wear and tear we can embrace. The mix of denim washes and the patchwork pockets help make this piece even more intriguing – check out the uneven hems at the bottom too.
Topshop MOTO Mullet Oversized Jacket, $126
Colour blocking
Everything goes well with black; this colourblocked jacket gives a strong street style vibe. Bonus points for adding a baseball cap.
Monki Denim Oversized Colour Block Denim Jacket, $108.69, from asos.com
White denim
There’s obviously plenty going on with this jacket, but we love the whale motif at the back the most. White denim leaves plenty of room for fun details like these.
C2H4 Embroidered Denim Jacket, $466, from luisaviaroma.com
Blazer cut
It won’t look too formal or corporate if you wear it in a slouchy silhouette and pair it with a casual outfit, and definitely not when it comes with slogans emblazoned on the back like this.
