Why We're Taking Hair Colour Inspiration From New York City

It’s easy to get into an Empire State of Mind. There’s a reason why so many songs have been written about the Big Apple, and why it’s the setting of so many of the most recognisable movies and television shows. It’s the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, after all, and one of the best places to get inspired; calling New York City the most famous city in the world wouldn’t be such a bold statement, because has any other city in the world managed to capture the collective imagination and hold such a significant presence in pop culture to such an extent?
Makes complete sense, then, that since NYC is Redken’s home city, the Fifth Avenue brand is going back to its roots for this season’s hair colours. The “Colour My NYC” campaign is all about shades influenced by some of New York’s most iconic landmarks, from the towering Empire State, all the way down to the ubiquitous yellow taxis that roam the avenues and streets.
Relax – we don’t mean sporting bright yellow hair here. Redken has incorporated parts of the city into the hair colours in subtle ways, so yellow taxis become coppery highlights in a head of auburn; the Empire State Building is reflected in brunette tones that catch the light in all the right ways; and the spirit of The Rink at the Rockefeller Centre, the city’s most famous ice skating rink that comes to life each winter, is translated into a full head of platinum for the bold ones.

The methods with which your hairstylist will be applying the colour also stem from rather unexpected places of inspiration: first, the Yin & Yang symbol, which represents two opposite forces coming together as one whole – in the same way, hair colour will be applied with a “slicing” method in opposing directions, while ensuring the colour still looks cohesive.

And then, there’s the Kryptonite method – it might reduce Superman to a mere powerless being, but when it comes to hair colour, it’s all about layering on the dyes to make the hair look multidimensional, and with high shine (no glowing green hair here, promise).

All the looks shown here were created by local stylists using exactly these two techniques, to showcase the myriad of statement shades that all channel the spirit of NYC. Whether you prefer to keep to the dark side of the city with brunette tones inspired by architecture, or you’d rather take it all the way to the other extreme with unabashedly bright shades in the spirit of yellow cabs and fire hydrants, there’s something for everyone here. It’s New York City, after all.
