Just when you thought that the whole “copying” IKEA fad was done and dusted; here come more fashion goods inspired by the Swedish furniture company. And nope, Balenciaga ain’t the culprit here. This time round, multi-label fashion store ACTUALLY is releasing an exclusive IKEA collection this August 2017.
With help from Russian designer Nikita Gruzovik, the new collection features a medley of IKEA-inspired tees, as well as the clip-on accessory that Rich Chigga made cool again – the fanny pack.
Prices of the collection have yet to be revealed by ACTUALLY, but we’re pretty sure that they won’t cost anywhere near as much as Balenciaga’s infamous “FRAKTA” bag. There are also no details as to how many different types of tees there will be, or whether the collection has IKEA’s stamp of approval.
On another note, Balenciaga isn’t the only brand that’s comfortable with “borrowing” influences from everyday brands, contrary to popular belief. Previously, English fashion designer Anya Hindmarch launched cereal-inspired handbags, while Vetements released a DHL tee courtesy of Gosha Rubchinskiy.
Still, IKEA is a favourite for bootleggers. For instance, an entire Instagram account called @ikeaclothes is dedicated to turning the FRAKTA bag into different pieces of clothing, like bucket hats, belts, and even high-cut shoes reminiscent of Chuck Taylor’s.
Whether ACTUALLY pulls off its latest collection in that same stylish way, or in the cheap but overly-priced Balenciaga way remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure though: the rip-offs won’t be stopping anytime soon.
ACTUALLY’s exclusive IKEA collection will be available at its Orchardgateway store this August 2017.
