We first fell in love when we saw this Vans x Opening Ceremony sneaker collection, full of unabashed bling and iridescent glimmer that’s sure to stand out in any outfit, but you know, it’s a limited edition design that’s already off the shelves. Then came the elusive appeal of PUMA’s Crushed Jewel pack, where the tips of the shoes come dipped in some high-impact sparkle, a nice rainbow mix in fact, or the subtle glitter toe caps of these minimalist Axel Arigato kicks.
Needless to say, along with some very ace Gucci Aces and bright Miu Miu sneaks, you can say we’re wading deep in glitter, and we don’t think the trend’s about to wear off that easily (as with all glittery things on our skin). But hey, that’s not a bad thing! If you’re looking for shoes that will be the ultimate statement piece in your outfit, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s an extensive round-up of all our favourite pairs of glitter sneakers.
Classic Silver
In the world of glitz and sneakers, somehow, gold doesn’t reign supreme — instead, silver has dethroned the official royal shade but we’re totally up for it anyway. Our hunch is that gold glitter sneakers can be a bit overwhelming, whereas silver, a more neutral colour, tends to work better as a versatile shade that can complement most outfits. Melissa’s rubber-based sneakers score high on comfort and the glam factor, as do these espadrilles-like sneakers by Italian style icon (and NYLON cover girl) Chiara Ferragni. Or, you can look for those with funky leather appliques that break up the shiny texture, as seen in the two leather sneakers.
Think Pink
Yeah, we’ve gone on and on about pink being the colour of the year for sneakers, but the millennial shade isn’t quitting just about yet. It’s not so much a girly shade as a colour that just stands out as a punchy pop of colour, while in 2017, it has the unique ability to be both cute and edgy at the same time. Go figure. In the meantime, we’ll go on loving the very full-on glitter styles of the Gucci Ace trainers, kind of an It-shoe among the fashion circles with its iconic Web stripe, as well as Minna Parikka’s cute bunny version that comes complete with long ears, a fluffy tail and a nice monochromatic look (those pink soles!). Very precious, indeed. You can also go for a champagne shade that’s on the more orange side of the pink spectrum — KEDS’ version comes with girly ribbon laces as well.
Oh So Subtle
And then, sometimes, you want to wear the trend, but going all out’s just a bit too much for your style. Thankfully, we’ve got the more subtle variations — whether the glitter’s limited to just the toe caps, some light sprinkling on the soles, or black glitter on a black base so all you see is a starry canvas. We’ll say that the PUMA Crushed Jewel ones are the most standout among these bunch, thanks to the contrast of textures (suede and crushed glitter), wrapped up in a classic 60s silhouette. The Vans pair also boosts a revamped version of their classic lace-up high-tops, padded collars included, while these Axel Arigatos are your minimalist Italian leather favourites with a twist. As for Joshua Sanders’ oversized bow, it’s also a familiar, and thus comforting, silhouette, though now given the glitzy treatment.
Luxury Picks
Glitter already makes the humble sneaker more luxurious, thus elevating the casual shoe, so what more can you expect from those of the luxury tier? A lot actually. The Miu Miu and Valentino picks, for instance, are made from soft, smooth and supple leather, with additional elements that give the shoes extra shine — Miu Miu’s version comes with a playful beaded felt patch and a brand tag at the side, while Valentino’s silver glitter option (see, silver!) pack a row of mini studs at the heel, probably an ode to their Rockstud bags. Of course, the Giuseppe Zanotti style sees that edgy double-zip and thick rubber sole, with a fine blue glitter that’ll twinkle even in the day.
And Your Affordable Ones
To be fair, these look as good as their more pricey counterparts if you’re gunning for the casual style, and yes, they both cost below $100! Not a bad deal at all. Dorothy Perkin’s version is sleek and subtle, with the glitter embellishments kept just to the front and back, while ONLY plays up the whole “business in the front, party at the back” idea by loading the entire heel part of the shoe with standout crushed glitter.
