How to Make a Lipstick that “Isn’t Your Shade” Work for You

I don’t know about you, but I love the feeling of excitement from testing out new makeup, whether they’re bought online or in stores. Unfortunately, many of them quickly turn into huge disappointments.

I’m sure you feel the same. Even though the colour looked gorgeous swatched on your arm or on the website, it just doesn’t look right on your lips. It’s either too ashy, too similar to your skin tone such that your lips disappear, too warm-toned… the list goes on. This could happen because your lip undertone may vary from your skin’s.
Well, fret not! Here are some ways that you can prevent yourself from wasting your hard-earned money and make those lip shades work for you.
1. Layer it on a lip liner

If the lipstick colour doesn’t match your lip undertone, then change your lip colour! Layer a lip liner to counteract the lipstick undertone to create a colour that your heart desires. If the lipstick is too cool-toned, layer it with a warm-toned lip liner underneath or vice versa. Similarly, if the lipstick is too ashy-looking, add on a brighter lip liner underneath to transform the lip shade.

A tinted lip gloss can help to not only change up the colour of your lipstick, but also make your lips look fuller. Just a quick dab of lip gloss onto the centre of your lips will certainly give off that illusion and make your lips sparkle.

A fool-proof method would be to mix it with other existing lipsticks that you might have. Just have fun and experiment mixing ‘too brown’ shades with ‘too neutral’ shades or other combinations and who knows? You might end up with the perfect shade concoction for yourself! You can also go one step further and melt both shades together in a lip pot for easy on-the-go application.

Sometimes lip shades don’t work on you only because it looks out of place with the rest of your makeup, such as your blush and eyeshadow. It’s time to get out of your comfort zone and experiment with those different shades you’ve been meaning to try. While a nude lip might wash you out with a relatively neutral look, it might look really good with a pop of orange/ yellow or a smokey eye.
5. Dab off excess lipstick

At times, your lip shade may not be working for you as it comes off too strong on your lips. A bold red shade or a purple, for instance. Simply press on a piece of tissue to remove some colour and make it more wearable for everyday wear.
