Oh there are plenty of trends floating around alright, whether it’s ruffles or gingham or embroidery, but the one we’re suddenly most excited about isn’t that original, it’s kinda borrowed actually, and yet we still love how it’s creatively worn anyway — menswear fashion, this time, on the ladies.
For a start, let’s skip the whole boyfriend jeans and interpretations of the crisp white shirt, yeah? Those are great and all, but kinda done, and we recently found out that the oversized “after-sex” work shirt thing you see in movies and TV shows is a lie anyway. We aren’t talking about going tomboy (though that’s totally great) and unisex streetwear too. Think classic menswear pieces — a suit or a blazer — and how we can reinterpret that for the feminine silhouette or colour palette.
The Checkered Blazer
Seen these around lately? Blazers are pretty commonplace in a boardroom setting, but we’re breaking out of that and heralding the blazer for everyday wear — especially when they feature this particular checked pattern, formerly called the ‘Prince of Wales check’. Obviously, a certain prince was responsible for popularising the pattern (Edward VII to be precise), but today, we’re seeing glen plaid in all sorts of non-formal attire.
The best way to wear it, in our opinion, is to get rid of the stuffy formality — put on a plain t-shirt or logo tee, and maybe some loosely-draped pants for a softer silhouette against the more structured blazer style. Or, go for a flattering dress. If you’re not a fan of grey (that’s rare though), a brighter neutral-based plaid with streaks of red can really lift a look too. Of course, the most “classic” way to wear them would be…
The Pant Suit
Just like Margaret Zhang, you wanna look like you’re pulling this off with zero effort, so once again, reach for the casual tee or low-heeled shoes for it to make sense, basically something without collars. While men typically go for boring versatile shades such as black or blue to maximise their wear, you can afford to go more creative with this — after all, wearing the blazer and trousers separately is still an option as well, so you’re just thinking smart, really.
Wearing a head-to-toe design might seem daunting, and while the striped suit looks amazingly edgy, we’re aware that not everyone can pull it off so well — kudos if you can though, so go on and get it if that’s something you love. For the more conservative, even a simple block colour works wonders; rather than a dull palette, opt for a bright colour or muted pink, or, a subtle check pattern. Having that one entire design across your outfit will have you look instantly sleek.
On that note, you can play around with textures and trendy colours too — this burnt orange blazer certainly does the trick.
Buckled Loafers
Shoes make or break the look, especially when it comes to menswear and the 99 rules in their shoe rulebook. Loafers? Brogues? Oxfords? Does it really matter? All you need to do to be inspired is to look at the style of these shoes — the flat heel, the buckle, the covered toecap — and wear them how you want it. These can be a comfy option to formal office attire, or an easy way to dress up a totally casual attire, even if it is jeans and a t-shirt.
What we can’t get enough of though are mules — slip-on designs that look like the menswear loafers, though with a backless design that’s more akin to sandals. You still get that classy buckle and basic silhouette, but without the part that gives you blisters. Quite a good compromise actually!
Oversized Denim Jackets
Since we’ve been going on about reinterpreting formal attire for casual wear — and also casually going to over to your guy friend’s/boyfriend’s/brother’s wardrobe to lift a look — here’s something you can steal too. Isn’t it great that the oversized denim jacket’s getting a moment now? You don’t have to try one for size or see if it fits, just go ahead and pick one based on how cool it will look. Plenty of #OOTDs see people wearing these off shoulder (though we don’t know if people actually walk around with the jacket half falling off), while distressed styles and edgy washes are also trending now.
