Fictional fashion icon Carrie Bradshaw once said, when mocking her boyfriend Berger for mentioning a scrunchie in his novel: “I loved it…except for one huge problem. You have your leading lady running all over town wearing a scrunchie. A scrunchie!”.
That was said circa 2003. As much as we like to deny it, the scrunchie was a hair staple in the 80s and part of the 90s. You might have owned one (or many) as a kid. Think shoulder pads, nylon tights, and legwarmers – all things we thought we left in the 80s.
Don’t mind the embarrassing photos of you and your scrunchie because that chunky elasticised fabric wrapped around your hair is now due for a comeback.
Granted, its revitalisation has been long overdue. While designers like Missoni, Marc Jacobs and even street fashion labels like American Apparel and Topshop reintroduced the scrunchie in their 2013 collections, it never quite caught on.
Most recently, it made a debut at New York Fashion Week with Mansur Gavriel’s Fall 2017 show.
Our favourite Instagram It Girls have also been donning them, perched high above their heads in a tight ponytail or bun.
Is it time to resuscitate the hair relic? It’ll give us some nostalgic relief, that’s for sure.
