So many elements to consider when you’re on a hunt for your next new pair of sunnies – frames, textures, patterns, gradients, what else? Whether you like them covering your face à la Victoria Beckham or with a retro cat-eye frame that sharply turns upwards, this season’s sunglasses are back oversized but not necessarily chunky. We’re more than ready to experiment with these sunglasses styles – some of them are timeless classics with a unique twist, some of them edgy enough to be a standalone accessory.
We know. Oversized sunnies have been on trend on and off over the past few years. But hey, why deny it when some of the best designers out there are crafting some of the best oversized designs?
Not to worry, oversized doesn’t instantly equate to looking “bug-eyed”. Rest your niggling fears, and here’s a trick to pulling off oversized sunnies: find a pair that contrasts the shape of your face. If your face tends towards a rounder shape, then a square frame is the perfect fit and vice versa.
Gentle Monster recently opened in Singapore (boy, were we pleased about it), and gave us access to the cult-favourite South Korean eyewear brand.
This pair, as a Tilda Swinton x Gentle Monster collaboration, is super reflective, and is built from a mirrored whole cut lens that runs directly from the bridge to both temples. Miu Miu’s following right on track too, with their square framed acetate pair that’s playfully lined with blue shimmering glitter.
With pantos-shaped coloured lenses, Dior’s So Real Pop sunglasses brings back the iconic looks of the 1950s and 60s.
These Chanel sunglasses in tortoiseshell has a bold upper frame with lenses coloured a light brown gradient.
For those of you who are looking for a rounder frame, you’re in luck because oversized round frames will be crowding up the shelves of every eyewear store.
Chloé (Gold Oversized Round Sunglasses), USD415 at www.ssense.com
Chloe’s Gold Oversized Round Sunglasses come with yellow gradient lenses that don’t seem that great at protecting you from sun exposure. But why complain, when it makes you look this good?
And of course, Fendi’s Run Away glasses. Featuring Fendi’s new round F-logo, these sunglasses come in striking colours including Blue, Brown, Pink, Red and Black. Although they look startlingly plain at first glance, a closer look lets us appreciate the playful metal frame that comes in with a double bridge to emphasise the rounded structure.
If you’re not after conventional frames, why not try something a bit more quirky – like a heart-shaped mirrored pair from Saint Laurent? Almost a cat-eye shape but not quite, this frame promises to flatter almost all face shapes while defining your cheekbones.
