This year has seen quite a fair bit of yellow in eyeshadows palettes like Kat Von D’s Pastel Goth Palette and TooFaced Peanut Butter And Honey Palette. When Fenty’s Killwatt Highlighter in Trophy Wife – a beautiful yellow gold – was released, that just made us realise that yellow is trending. Some people have even taken to using Trophy Wife as an eyeshadow (yes, even Asians), which makes us wonder why everyone is avoiding yellow eyeshadow.
Yellow has always been overlooked when it comes to eyeshadow colours because it is thought to be a difficult shade to work with. To make things even more complicated, Asian skin tones are yellow to begin with. You might think that highlighting our yellow tones might seem a little counter-intuitive, but what if we were to tell you that you can be Asian and still look good in yellow eyeshadow?
Meet L’Oreal Paris’ newest eyeshadow palette, the Limited Edition 24K Gold Palette.
The Limited Editition 24K Gold Palette houses 10 glittery shades, including a bright, bold yellow shade that you’ll only be able to find in luxury eyeshadow palettes. To feel a tad fancier, just know that this is the first drugstore palette to carry a yellow eyeshadow that contains actual 24k gold pigments. Even if you decide that the yellow is too bold, there are still 9 other colours to play around with! The black gold shade (first from the right) has tinges of yellow for a more subdued look. If you don’t know how to go about the yellow eyeshadow look, this palette is a good place to start experimenting with, and it’s also pretty affordable at $29.90.
Mono swatches, as numbered
Even though the colours might seem super bright, you’ll find that the eyeshadow goes on sheer. Just look at the mono swatches above! You can easily build on the colour for a more intense finish, or you can go with a sheer finish – something you’ll find hard to do with a super pigmented eyeshadow. We had a little play around with the L’Oreal 24K Gold Palette, and tried out four different ways to rock the yellow eyeshadow look without seeming too gaudy (or looking like you’ve got an eye infection).
FOUR WAYS TO ROCK YELLOW EYESHADOW
1. Highlight the inner corners of your eyes
If you are not so keen on caking on the yellow, try it on subtly by highlighting the inner corners of your eyes. The yellow glimmers help to open up your eyes. Blend it in with a dark brown shade (we used the fifth shade from the L’Oreal 24K Gold Palette) or a black eye shadow. You might think the yellow isn’t really obvious, but the gold shimmer catches the light whenever you turn your head for a subtle pop of colour.
2. Accentuate your eyes
Don’t be afraid of using yellow as part of your eyeshadow look, even if you have yellow under skin tones. Use the yellow shade by itself as a sheer shimmer, or blend it with other colours. If you are using yellow by itself, line your lashes with a dark brown pencil to define your lash line or put on some mascara to let the yellow eyeshadow take centerstage.
3. Feel the heat by mixing it up with some warm tones
Warm tones are currently trending as well, and they surprisingly match quite well with yellow. Here, we mixed a matte orange-y red from the L’Oreal Paris Blossom Tint Caresse (BO6 Rose Blossom) with the yellow shade from the L’Oreal 24K Gold Palette for a super toasty look. Line your bottom lash line to further define your eyes.
4. Shimmery liquid gold eyelids
Want to impress? Go all out and get those yellow flickers onto your eyelids! Wet the tip of your brush slightly and use it to pack the colour onto your eyelids. Blend out with some deep golden black eyeshadow for a smoky eye look that will turn all those heads. Swipe on some black eyeliner and you’ll be good to go!
And that’s how you rock the yellow shade! With a mix of nude pinks, dark emeralds and even a crystal blue, the Limited Edition 24K Gold Palette is an extension of the existing La Palettes in Beige and Rose. From everyday looks to glamourous nights out, you can easily pop the slim palette into your bag to touch up your face for the transition between the office and the bar.
MIX AND MATCH FOR THE HOTTEST FESTIVE LOOKS
Now that you’ve mastered yellow eyeshadow looks, it’s time to try out the other colours! The palette is super versatile in terms of colour choices, and you can mix and match them for unique, festive looks. Here are a couple of looks to get you started.
Play with colours to bring out your fun side for the festivities!
As if you still needed more bang for your buck – the palette also includes a nose-sculpting shade (the nude shade all the way on the left) that you can use to contour your nose.
