One of the most mundane tasks in the world is packing clothes. Folding and slotting garments in a suitcase just isn’t very exciting, let alone fuss-free. It’s all too easy to miss out on a sweatshirt here, or a cap there, and we’d much rather skip the boring parts and just hop on the plane already.
But you know what’s worse than putting clothes in a suitcase? Taking them out and putting them back inside again for the return trip home. The hassle is something every lazy traveller could do without, although it is an unenviable, inevitable process. Till now, that is. Enter ShelfPack – a two-in-one suitcase that doubles up as your own convenient, on-the-go closet.
Disguised as a regular roller bag, ShelfPack opens up to reveal stacked shelves that make packing a whole lot easier for disorganised folk. Yes, folding is still a necessary chore over here, but hey, at least you can organise your clothes neatly, and not have to crumple your favourite shirt by cramming it in the teeniest corner of your suitcase.
Invented by Ken McKaba, a software engineer, the ShelfPack suitcase comes with four built-in “shelves” that are supported by a retractable frame. When fully extended, the shelves reach a height of about 42-inches, so there’s more than enough space to fit enough clothing for a long vacation. Packing situation, solved.
Now all ShelfPack needs are tiny robot arms fitted to its sides to help us fold our clothes automatically, especially when it comes to those thick wooly winter jackets that are really hard to get down to a smaller size. But we suppose this will do for now. It is after all the biggest development in the luggage industry since roller wheels were introduced.
Do be warned, though. The price of convenience is not going to come cheap. You can get one ShelfPack suitcase for $602 via Ubuy’s website, although you may just want to put in a little more effort when packing for your trip, and get a cheaper, but less versatile suitcase instead.
