Anyone and everyone must be familiar with one of Japan’s biggest celebrities Hello Kitty. She is after all the face of an $80 billion global media franchise. This January, her star power is crossing over to luxury label Balenciaga with its Ville bag reimagined with the feline’s iconic features.
Demna Gvasalia, creative director of Balenciaga, is most notable for his edgy kitsch designs and twisted take on popular culture. For SS20, it may come as little surprise that the Sanrio character, best known amongst pre-teen girls and adoring adults on school supplies, candy, and theme parks should serve as his muse for high-end arm candy. This juxtaposition of the polarising consumer products is meant to supposedly deconstruct our notions of both. Intriguing maybe?
And while it’s undeniable that these Ville Bag are adorable, here’s the twist, they are also supposedly targeted for men. So for those who are confident and have thousands to spare this January (new year, less fragile masculinity?), consider these bags that come with Balenciaga Triple S shoelace whiskers available in black, pink, or white, each also comes adorned with Hello Kitty’s red leather bow. If you need another reason to snag one, we dare say they make for great replacements for those who missed out on the sold-out McDonald’s Hello Kitty carriers.
Meow.
