Editor’s Beauty Picks — March 2020

We all need things to look forward to… check these out; the best in beauty we’ve tried this past month.

Gucci Beauty Mascara L’Obs0cur
$56,  launched 1 March 2020, available at Takashimaya Beauty Hall

There’s no doubt that this mascara tube is very pretty. It looks almost vintage with its pastel pink tube and gold metal hued wand with vertical grooves, but without bordering on cliche the way some “vintage-style” makeup brands end up being. It has a flexible elastomer brush that grabs on to lashes easily, and a creamy product texture that as the press release states, “builds and builds”. It really does. And I love it. I’ve heard feedback that the formula is clumpy but no such clumps happened for me; in fact, this mascara gave intense, smooth application of colour, and defined, separated and volumised my lashes. Definitely one of the best mascaras I’ve ever tried. I’ll be buying this again.

Shiseido Makeup Synchro Skin Glow Cushion Compact
$75 in 8 shades, launched February 2020

One of the best cushion compacts in the market, rivalling the ones from YSL and Dior. While I find the famous YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau ($92) a bit too “juicy”, and the Dior Forever Couture Perfect Cushion Foundation ($92) dries out too fast, this Shiseido cushion compact is just nice. The sponge dispenses just the right amount of cream, which is not too liquid and not too thick. It glides on skin silky smooth and melts into a soft semi-matte finish. I can find no fault with this compact. Definitely buy if you can get your shade — there are now 8 shades, up from the original 6. And what’s new this year is the slimmer red case that you see here. It’s nice, isn’t it?

Shiseido Shimmer GelGloss in 03 Kurumi Beige
$35 in 10 shades, launching April 2020

I’ve not used a lipgloss that’s been this smooth and hydrating. Upon contact with lips, it just melts in and forms a seal that makes lips look luscious. The plastic applicator is also so well-designed; it’s not a new invention but it’s still nonetheless a good choice of design. There’s no unnecessary sponge tip or brush, making it very hygienic and super easy to clean, and it spreads the product on really smoothly as well. And the clear packaging is beautiful! It’s hard plastic, which means it’s sturdy, but there’s some room for squeezing to dispense the product. I’m in love with this lip gloss, and I’ve never been in love with a lip gloss before. BUY!

Dior Addict Stellar Gloss
$50 in 12 shades, launching 16 March 2020

This was another surprising lip gloss discovery this month. The press release says this creates a “plumping shine”, so I expected one of those tingling minty formulas, but instead this feels so comfortable — really like a hydrating lip balm. I picked out shade 754 Magnify to use and it’s a beautiful rose plum, which is highly pigmented, and the colour lasted for hours! This will be my new go-to lip colour for meetings and events.

NARS Afterglow Lip Balm in Dolce Vita
$40, available in 8 shades at sephora.sg

NARS previously had this lip balm in the shades Orgasm (a sheer, peachy pink with golden shimmer) and Clean Cut (clear). Last month, they released six new shades, which includes this one featured here: Dolce Vita, a sheer dusty rose. It swipes on glassy and hydrating, and adds a natural wash of colour on top of your own natural lip colour, enhancing it and evening its tone. This is a very easy lip product to use with very nice results.

Clé de Peau Beauté Correcting Cream Veil
$100, from 1 April 2020

I previously used the original version of this product and loved it; in fact, I found that all Clé de Peau Beauté primers did a pretty good job (well, kind of expected at their price point). This one is a reformulation that brightens and refreshes the skin and adds a slight blurring effect for a smoother complexion. The signature “Skin-Empowering Illuminator” ingredient that is found in the brand’s skincare, and the “Light-Empowering Enhancer” found in all Clé de Peau Beauté makeup is also included in this new Correcting Cream Veil. I’ve been using this for a few days now and am loving the way my makeup looks on my face the entire day; near perfect on application, and still fresh by night time. There’s also SPF25 coverage, up from SPF20 from the previous version; and I have to say: the packaging is beautiful.

Drunk Elephant Cocomino™ Marula Cream Conditioner
$35 for 240ml, available at sephora.sg from late April 2020

We wrote about the new hair and body collection from Drunk Elephant here when it was first announced, and only recently got our hands on preview samples. Almost everything smells like almond (it’s the marula ingredient), with the shampoo being the most fragranced in the line-up. The conditioner is definitely the stand-out product; it’s a silky smooth white buttery cream that feels soft on the hands, and when it touches hair, it sinks in and absorbs readily. After the very-first use with it, my hair was super soft and smoother than ever. The results are instant and addictive, and for its price of $35 for a 240ml bottle, I think it’s worth it considering the amazing results I’ve been getting so far. Also, this conditioner is free of sulphates, silicones, essential oils, fragrance, dyes and drying alcohols, so works well if you have coloured or keratin-treated hair.
