If you’ve grown up in a household with a Japanese parent, chances are you’ve spent many weekends at Liang Court, seated at the children’s play area watching Doraemon while said parent shopped for groceries at Meidi-Ya Supermarket. Relatable? If so, then you’ll definitely appreciate the nostalgic feels presented by Gucci’s Resort 2021 collection, that features a shopping tote with the anime character all over its GG Supreme Canvas exterior.

The shopping tote comes in a double top-handle style with a sizeable tote silhouette. The body features the luxury label’s now-iconic GG Supreme Canvas updated with Doraemon all over. Additionally, the side panels come in deep burgundy leather, exuding the vintage luxe vibe popularised by Gucci. And topping it all off is Gucci’s signature hardware in aged gold on a leather tab.

First seen during Gucci’s 12-hour Livestream presentation for its Resort 2021 collection — entitled Epilogue — staged at Rome’s Palazzo Sachetti, the Doraemon printed shopping tote is modelled on one of the luxury label’s very own designer donning a 70s inspired retro, gender-neutral holiday look.

In a press release, creative director Alessandro Michele himself says, “The period of greatest liberation, which I lived through when I was a child, was the 70s, which were really the golden years of the brand I work for, and I keep going back to them because, for me personally they were the real seeds of change.”

With the 70s as this collection’s inspiration, it would seem that Doraemon’s cameo is perfectly fitting. Originally published in January 1970, the anime character celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. And arguably, there’s no better way for Doraemon to be honoured than having a luxury bag prominently featured with its likeness.
