The Apple iPhone 12 smartphones are sold with a USB-C to Lightning charging cable, but not with the power adapter. And this cable won’t be compatible with the USB-A power adapters that came with previous versions of Apple iPhones since 2007. For Apple fans and those looking to upgrade, the lack of a charging head isn’t going to deter your purchase, so here are the best adapters — for plug-in and for wireless charging — that you can get now to charge up your new phone (or any other device that you have a suitable USB-C cable for).
FOR FAST CHARGING
NATIVE UNION SMART HUB PD 45W
$95 from nativeunion.com
This is a 3-port wall charger that comes complete with international adapters. There are 2 USB-A and 1 USB-C ports (for the cable that comes with the iPhone 12, this uses the USB-C port), and at 45W, it claims to power up an iPhone to 50% power in under 30 minutes.
It’s certainly not a cheap charger, but power and good design come at a cost. Here’s a diagram taken from the Native Union website on how fast this adapter can charge your device:
FOR AESTHETICS
NOMAD BASE STATION HUB EDITION, WALNUT
US$139.95, from nomadgoods.com
This is even more expensive than the super fast-charging Native Union wall charger, but it looks so classy. This hub can charge up to four devices simultaneously — two of them wirelessly, and another two through a USB-A 7.5W port, and a USB-C 18W port.
The padded leather wireless charging surface is matched with real walnut (each piece looks unique), and there are LED charging indicators, and an ambient light sensor dims these LEDs at night.
There’s also a slightly more affordable Metal Hub Edition (US$99.95) and an Apple Watch Edition (US$149.95) that’s on back order and will only ship out from November 26, 2020. But we really love this Walnut version.
FOR PORTABILITY
BELKIN BOOST CHARGE PORTABLE WIRELESS BATTERY + STAND SPECIAL EDITION (10,000 MAH)
$124, from apple.com
This is one of the new launches from Belkin that’s exclusively available from Apple — it’s a wireless charger that has an additional USB-A port for charging a second device. It can be detached from the stand to become a portable 10,000 mAH charger that you can take with you, and when connected to the stand, it delivers 7.5W of power to the smartphone in both portrait or landscape mode. Also available in black.
FOR BASIC CHARGING
APPLE 20W USB-C POWER ADAPTER
$29, from apple.com
This 20W adapter is compact, with the pins folding in when not in use. It can be used to charge the new iPhone 12 series as well as all the iPads. You can find lots of dupes of this charging head on Lazada or Shopee, but if you want the safety and security of a genuine iPhone-compatible charger, this is it.
FOR SANITISING
PHONE TOASTER
US$84, from indiegogo.com
This retro-looking “toaster” is a UVC phone sanitiser, wireless charger, bluetooth speaker, clock and USB-A charger in one.
It was funded on Kickstarter and will start to ship in November 2020, just in time for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Mini. It can fit smartphones up to the size of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, so we’re assuming the 12 Pro Max, which is of similar dimensions should go in without trouble.
Apart from sanitising the phone and being a wireless charger, we’re not expecting much in terms of sound quality from the bluetooth speaker, but it’s a nice touch and a really cool overall design for the home.
