We’ve got normcore and cottagecore, specifically “un-fashionable” styles beloved by the fashion elite, but has anyone considered Yosemite-chic? Gucci and The North Face certainly have, with an unlikely fashion collaboration that sees an array of ’70s-inspired styles — bright colours and floral patterns included. Adventure is certainly out there, and the great outdoors will soon be at your feet once you don one of the down jackets in the Gucci x The North Face collection, which “celebrates the spirit of exploration”.
Here, you’ll see The North Face’s rugged gear given Gucci’s aesthetic flourish, thanks to creative director Alessandro Michele — this partnership marks the first time that Gucci has partnered with another brand while under his tenure. The collaborative collection was teased at earlier in September on an Instagram post, though we’re now looking at the most extensive reveal yet.
Speaking of extensive, we do mean it. There’s everything to unpack here — clothing, bags, hiking boots, even tents and sleeping bags. Other apparel include windbreakers and fleeces, in addition to t-shirts and sweaters, quilted jackets, padded vests, jumpsuits, and skirts, for women and men. A leather hiking boot seems to be the item that everyone’s talking about — it comes in three colours, each featuring Gucci’s branded red and green woven stripe in the form of shoelaces.
The puffy jackets are based on The North Face designs from the ’70s, with some new floral patterns created for the collection. Of course, the key monogram would not go unmentioned here — Gucci and The North Face present a collaborative logo that’s unmistakable in its representation, seen most noticeably across the backpacks, though it also appears stamped on jackets and t-shirts.
There’s a certain wanderlust allure to the pieces, as the campaign images feature a nostalgic glow that makes us miss all the times we could travel outside of this year’s pandemic. These are photographed by Daniel Shea in the Alps, set in a dreamy backdrop of trees, mountains, and lakes, where models casually don branded jackets — even the Gucci Jackie 1961 — like it’s no big deal. Commitment, we say.
The Gucci x The North Face collection is also striving towards sustainable fashion. Backpacks and bags in the collection are made from ECONYL®, an eco-friendly nylon fabric sourced from regenerated materials such as fishing nets. Purchase a piece and your item will be presented in a recyclable cardboard box with handles, instead of a shopping bag, with the material sourced from sustainably managed forests.
The Gucci x The North Face collection is debuting in China on 29 December 2020, and set to launch in January 2021 everywhere else and online. In Singapore, a pop-up concept will be unveiled from 8 January – 24 January 2021.
