Every Chinese New Year, LEGO celebrates with dedicated sets celebrating the occasion. For 2021, there are three new box sets to collect and build, including a modular one from Duplo.
LEGO The Story of Nian, $109.90
Who’s Nian? In Chinese mythology, it’s a ferocious half-dragon, half-unicorn monster who goes on a rampage through villages every lunar New Year, eating everything including her favourite delicacy, children! Nian was eventually deafened by the roar of firecrackers, and scared off by its dazzling lights and the colour red — which is why these three elements feature prominently in Chinese New Year festivities.
With this LEGO set, you can play out the story of Nian with your kids; there are 1,067 pieces, and includes a posable Nian creature, a snowman, grandpa, grandma, three children and a person in an ox costume.
LEGO Spring Lantern Festival, $159.90
Did you know that there are 15 days of Chinese New Year? And on the 15th and last day, there is a celebration called the Spring Lantern Festival. It’s celebrated with — you guessed it — lanterns, and lots of tangyuan (glutinous rice balls in sweet syrupy soup).
In this set, there are 1,793 pieces and it’s the largest set in this series. It includes 8 mini figures (so auspicious!), with a couple of them wearing shirts printed with 2021 and the head of an ox. There’s also a koi pond, a circular doorway, a rabbit lantern, camera, mobile phone, selfie stick, a buildable bubble tea, and best of all — an illuminated LEGO light brick.
LEGO Duplo Happy Childhood Moments, $149.90
This modular playset introduces toddlers to two exciting events: Chinese New Year and the first day of kindergarten.
In the kindergarten build, there are heaps of fun elements for kids to play with, such as doors, windows and drawers that can be opened, a dim sum table that can rotate, a slide, and even little blankets for the beds.
In the “home build”, there’s a duplex, full bathroom, red packets for exchanging, and dumplings for pretend feasting.
