For a nostalgic trip back to Y2K fashion, can things get any more iconic than hobo bags, often seen on our then-style inspirations, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen? Why, of course, especially when we’re talking about this new Kipling collaboration. The everyday accessories brand has teamed up with Anna Sui for a trendy capsule collection that was featured on the designer brand’s FW21 Virtual Runway show this year, and you’ll now be able to walk away with these certified-runway pieces too.
As you can see, the bags and pouches of the Kipling x Anna Sui collaboration are inspired by the girly-meets-rock-n’-roll aesthetics defined by the New York designer, hence the vibrant purple butterfly motifs, as well as those ornate black finishes we’ve come to associate with Anna Sui, now reinterpreted on puffy quilted bags.
“It was a great challenge for me to work on the bags and try to put my DNA onto them. People asked why butterflies. As I was developing the brand, I started to think about icons, and the shape of butterflies are not only so beautiful, but also presents freedom,” says Anna Sui. “From the second I saw the Kipling x Anna Sui Collection, I was so inspired to travel again as I want to show them off at the airport.”
The selection of bags brings together the best of Kipling’s silhouettes too. There are the classic ART tote styles, in a large size that’s great for travel or gym days, as well as a more everyday ART MINI size — especially useful since these are lightweight and waterproof. A padded quilted pattern is seen across convertible shoulder bags, pouches, and a mini backpack, while our personal favourites have to be the KEZIA backpack and AMELA hobo bag that channels those early aughts vibes. Each of the bags are further adorned with a butterfly keychain as well.
