While not all of us consider ourselves avid art toy collectors, we’ve definitely had our fair share of the blind box experience — whether as a collector silently praying for the particular design we want, or as a curious bystander watching other collectors shake the boxes like seasoned pros. If you’ve waiting for that one special collection to get started on your blind box journey though, this might be it — Mighty Jaxx’s Kandy x Sanrio collection.
Launching 25 May 2022, 10pm SGT on the Mighty Jaxx website will be the award-winning studio’s first Kandy x Sanrio series, featuring iconic Sanrio characters such as Hello Kitty and My Melody in well-known artist Jason Freeny’s signature half-finished, half-exposed designs.
For the uninitiated, Mighty Jaxx is a Singapore-based designer toys and art collectibles studio that has been making waves in the vinyl art collectibles scene with their premium art toys and blind boxes. These are often created in partnership with global artists, as well as brands that include Netflix, Warner Brothers, and DC Comics.
They also do frequent collaborations with New York-based artist Jason Freeny, who is best known for his iconic anatomical character dissections that feature a seemingly half-finished design made up of a complete half and an exposed half. Some of his popular collaborations with Mighty Jaxx include Freeny’s Hidden Dissectibles: My Little Pony and Freeny’s Hidden Dissectibles: Spongebob Squarepants.
For the Kandy x Sanrio series, the artist was inspired by candies, hence his take on six regular and popular characters — Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, Bad Badtz-Maru, and Kerokerokeroppi, along with a rare fan-favourite character, Cinnamoroll. Each blind box is priced at USD $12.99 (approx. SGD $18) and is also available as a tray of 6 at USD $74.99 (approx. SGD $104).
