MUJI’s New Apparel Collection Is Designed For Hot And Humid Weather

Japanese retailer MUJI is an absolute go-to when shopping for home essentials, though we’d vouch just as much for their range of apparel too. Well-made, and with a very “MUJI” point of view thanks to a philosophy of quality, functional everyday wear, the silhouettes are just as sleek and minimalist as their home goods, while price tags are kept affordable too. And if you thought it can’t get any better, there’s this — the latest MUJI New Collection 2022, their first-ever clothing line designed specifically for the hot and humid weather across ASEAN countries.

With t-shirts, lightweight overshirts, shorts, pants, and more, the difference here extends even to the fabric choices of organic cotton and lyocell, where the latter is consciously made from eucalyptus pulp. Both these are particularly chosen for their lightweight nature and excellent breathability when worn, giving the clothes a cool and comfortable touch when against the skin.

MUJI has also gone the extra mile to ensure that their lyocell is both top-grade and environmentally-friendly. It is produced in a closed loop system with economical use of energy and water; the solvent used in the process is non-toxic and often; while the overall lyocell production process is far less toxic and wasteful compared to fabrics such as rayon and viscose. Furthermore, lyocell is fully biodegradable, breathable, and absorbs moisture better than cotton.

The MUJI New Collection 2022 spans across three categories — Men’s and Ladies’ Wear, the MUJI Walker series for light exercise, and Home Wear. Read on as we elaborate on each of these categories.

MEN’S AND LADIES’ EVERYDAY WEAR

“Simple” is often far harder to execute than one may think, but MUJI nails the minimalist brief to perfection. The everyday line — for both men and women — accomplish the brand’s core tenets of function, affordability, and quality, especially since we’re talking about the good reputation of Japanese quality standards.

Lightweight organic cotton and lyocell feature across the womenswear and menswear, so you know they’re soft and breathable on skin, while the choice of colours range from neutrals of white, beige, brown, blue and black, to muted shades of brick red, khaki green, or smoky green and blue. Either way, it’s incredibly easy to mix and match these pieces with one another!

The cohesive series also makes a case for layers — something we tend to avoid in Singapore. As you can see, the models sport open collar short sleeve shirts or cotton lyocell tunics over a regular t-shirt, making for an elevated everyday look that’s still breezy and breathable.

You can style the pieces however way you want as well; a jersey crew tee worn with shorts and layered with a tunic is perfect for the weekend, while the same tunic can be worn with chinos for a more formal style.

MUJI WALKER SERIES

Ideal for light exercises and outdoor walks, the MUJI WALKER series incorporated activewear elements into everyday wear, with sweat-absorbing and quick-drying properties woven right into the fabric used across the collection. Bonus: these are stretchy, repel water, and equipped with UV protection too, Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50 to be precise, and therefore highly recommended on your walks, jogs, and hikes.

MUJI has since added several new designs to this series, including a Sweat-Absorbent Quick-Drying T-Shirt, Sleeveless T-Shirt, Short Pants, and Leggings in a variety of neutral and pleasant colours.

HOME WEAR

Loungewear has been a matter of prime importance since our WFH days, and many of us aren’t intending to go back to our old and worn t-shirts any time soon. Looking presentable, and comfortable, even while at home is a possibility thanks to MUJI’s series of home wear items, a new series that launches in their ASEAN markets ahead of everywhere else.

The pieces here allow for ease of movement, with flattering and comfortable cuts across slub t-shirts, jersey shorts, jersey long pants and more. There’s also a comfy-looking rayon cotton jersey short sleeve dress and striped linen shirt tunics that remind us of classic PJs.
