Light introduces its e-ink Light Phone III with camera, 5G connectivity and fingerprint ID

If you’ve ever wanted to go back to basics with simple functionality for your mobile phone, the Light Phone III might just be what you’re seeking.

Having experience making phones since 2014, Light’s mission is to create devices that does not conform to the society standard of a mobile phone, cutting out on things such as social media, internet and email, that too often consume our attention in a day.

Promising to make “going light” even easier for new users, Light is introducing the Light Phone III, in January 2025.

At its core, the Light Phone III (USD $799, approx. S$1,084) is a simple phone which uses an e-ink black and white interface on a larger matte OLED display which is optimal for texting and using the simple tools of LightOS.

The Light Phone III is also built around a user-customisable menu of optional tools under LightOS to ensure a thoughtful experience. These include: Alarm, Calculator, Calendar, Directory, Directions, Hotspot, Music, Notes/Voice Memo, Podcast or Timer.

It does not, however, support platforms that are typically found on a smartphone such as Spotify, WhatsApp or Grab.

Unlike its predecessor, the Light Phone II, the Light Phone III now has a camera, inspired by the point-and-shoot film cameras, with a dedicated real shutter button, center focus and a fixed focal length.

The soon-to-be launched device also adds a metal frame, USB-C, fingerprint ID, a flashlight, 5G connectivity and an NFC chip to support a digital wallet and video calls with a front facing camera.

As the Light Phone III was made to last for years, it comes with an accessible battery that will be easy to replace, alongside the screen and USB port.
