As an avid photographer, author and advocate for women’s issues across a spectrum of needs and situations, Dr Chua’s second photographic book features 100 photographic portraits and stories of women in Singapore from all types of professions, vocations, labour as well as different ages and ethnicities alongside texts written by the doctor that shares the inspiring stories of each woman.

A bonus feature of the book is the 101st portrait of a migrant domestic worker who is a representation of home help, without whom many women may not be able to return or contribute to the workforce.

Dr Chua made these women the subject of her portraits as she was amazed by how they have led their lives and evolved their own identities while balancing responsibilities, work, relationships and their passions; with some occupying multiple roles at once.

These portraits directs focus to the motivations and attributes that have bolstered these special women, who have in their unique ways, been “holding up the sky” in Singapore.

In developing her portraits, Dr Chua kept her approach simple by shooting her subjects in ambient lighting without additional lighting or effects. She also kept the process collaborative, ensuring that she discusses and selects a location for the shoot that is meaningful to each of her subject.

Similar to her earlier publication, Dr Chua’s upcoming book is a fundraising book project that will be accompanied by an exhibition display where proceeds would go to benefit both the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations, for their Star Shelter program and their program supporting girls and women facing online bullying or harassment, as well as women-led art projects by The Private Museum.
