You’ve probably heard of SUPERMAMA after they went viral for their original magic cup which was inspired by then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his national addresses to Singaporeans, when he would take a sip from the little blue cup before changing languages.
More than recreating the “magic, language changing cup”, SUPERMAMA is a design brand and museum store that has become an integral part of Singapore’s cultural landscape, renowned for ‘Singapore Blue’, a distinctive line of cobalt blue and white porcelain wares that was also awarded the President’s Design Award.
Since the birth of the brand in 2010, SUPERMAMA has worked with over 100 Singaporean designers, artists and Japanese craft facilities to carefully curate items of different artistic perspectives that narrate the Singapore story.
Here’s a look at some of these products.
Year of the Dragon | Temple of Skate x Kihara Porcelain
As a powerful symbol intricately woven in into the cultural fabric of Singapore, the dragon represents strength, prosperity and good fortune. The original artwork behind the design was created with Sumi ink on rice paper which showcases fluid and precise brushwork reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy.
The plate, designed by Temple of Skate is created by Singaporean artist Tucks (Tuck Wai) and draws inspiration from the Japanese ukiyo-e painting style.
The Year of the Dragon | Temple of Skate x Kihara PORCELAIN PLATE is priced at S$120.
