I just saw this documentary on Netflix about the making of cult toys. The story of Lego was featured in one of the episodes — their rise to success and subsequent fall from glory. I think Lego’s in a catch-22 situation; their toys are expensive, but if they make them cheap, they lose some of their desirability and exclusivity. Take the Lego Millennium Falcon for example; it retailed at over $1,200, was in extremely limited quantity, and is now only available in Singapore on the black market at ridiculous prices :
I still want one, but am not about to even pay the original retail price for it (it’s available on the Lego US store for US$799.99).
Two years ago, Lego released the stunning Porsche 911 GT3RS, and I had the opportunity to build it with my 5-year-old. Unlike the Falcon, it’s still available. At close to $550, you really need to be a fan of the car (and Lego) to want to own one. And for that same group of fans, the Technic Bugatti Chiron is available from today! As I write this, Bricks World hasn’t updated their site yet, and a search of “Bugatti” brings me to this :
Definitely not what I was looking for.
Here’s a look at the Lego Technic Bugatti Chiron :
It will retail at $599.90, and as expected, only limited sets are going to be available in Singapore. But once again, this pricey toy will appeal mainly to fans of the French luxury automobile maker. And as a bonus to these fans, those who buy this Lego car will go into a lucky draw to win one of 10 VIP passes to the Fullerton Concours D’Elegance 2018 car show, and what Lego calls a “once-in-a-lifetime” chance to sit inside the actual multi-mllion-dollar hypercar.
Personally, I’d be very stressed sitting in that car thinking about how much I can’t afford to scratch anything. The Lego version, on the other hand, is much less stressful, but still quite pricey in its own right. Maybe if it came with the stock model, there’d be queues outside Lego stores now.
Find a man who looks at you the way this guy looks at the car.
This was my favourite part building the Lego Porsche — putting on the wheels!
The Lego Technic Bugatti Chiron retails at $599.90. Available at LEGO Certified Stores islandwide, and online at www.bricksworld.com and www.thebrickshop.com.sg.
