Character Cafes That You Have To Visit, Even If It’s Just For The Experience

If you asked us to be very honest, no one goes to a character cafe for the food. It’s all about the characters, plushies and cute design of the food that more often than not turns out to be mediocre. Whether you’re a Marvel fan or a secret fan of Hello Kitty, here are 8 character cafes for you to visit to live out your childhood dreams. *internally screaming in kawaii*

Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Café

If you’re craving for some cute food anytime of the day, just head to the airport. Located conveniently at the airport for both local and international fans, Hello Kitty has made herself at home in Terminal 3. The cafe is themed to an orchid garden, because it’s our national flower.

The garden chair with Hello Kitty (pictured above) is the most popular photo-spot. You’ll notice that Singapore’s Hello Kitty mascot has 2 bows – her normal bow under her left year and a huge bow in the center of her forehead that is striped red and white (our national colours!) Get ready for some Kitty-fied food and desserts, and don’t forget to pick up some Hello Kitty merch like tea blends and postcards before you head off.

My Melody Cafe

Hello Kitty’s best friend, My Melody also has her own garden in Singapore, but its across the island in Suntec City. Hiding in her little indoor garden wonderland with Flat The Mouse and Risu The Squirrel, My Melody’s Cafe is a much pinker affair.

Treasures Of Maryland, $19.50

Expect loads of pink-themed food, strawberries and cotton candy, and (of course) My Melody waiting under a tree to welcome you. We recommend getting the Princess Bunny (curry and rice), Treasures Of Maryland (ice cream and toast) and the Play Time Fondue (pink chocolate fondue!). The cafe is pretty small as it can only sit 38 people at once, so be prepared to wait a while during peak period. Because the cafe is so small, they won’t be stocking any merchandise, so take all the photos you can as they will be your only souvenirs!

Here’s a first look at the cafe and its food:

Gudetama Cafe

The depressed (and slightly pervertic) egg is another one of Japan’s most popular mascot, and it’s hard to see why not. The depressed and lazy egg is something someone we can all relate too whether we’re stressed out from  work or our studies or just life in general. Being an egg who likes to hide under a piece of limp bacon, there are quite a lot of egg-inspired dishes on the menu as you dine in egg-shaped booths with waffle ceilings. Rotational menu items always makes visiting the cafe a surprise, and is a good excuse to keep going back.

Just like all other character cafes, you can expect the prices to be slightly more expensive than your regular cafes but friends who have visited the cafe says that the food is quite decent compared to the others. (We’re not kidding – the  quality of food at some character cafes can be very substandard even though they look really nice)

Tip: they always dress up the Gudetama standing at the entrance depending on the occasion. So yes, you get to see Gudetama in a Cai Shen Ye’s hat if you visit the cafe during Chinese New Year. There’s also a corner stocked with exclusive merchandise like tote bags, pens, plushies and notebooks so that you can bring home your own personal Gudetama.

Dreamworks Kou Kou Cafe

We’re not complaining, but there are other cartoon characters besides the ones from Sanrio. We love you, Hello Kitty, but we also love other characters like the Cookie Monster and Po. Dreamworks has opened its first ever cafe in Bugis+ (not first in Singapore, but first in the WORLD), and you get to meet all your favourite Dreamworks characters from Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Trolls, Shrek and How To Be A Dragon.

Don’t let the colour put you off – these buns are actually really delicious

Even though the characters might be from places like Far Far Away, all the dishes are inspired by local cuisines. There are mantous, hamburg steak, pork belly baos, and dumplings. Our favourites? The Three Treasures (steamed egg custard aka chawanmushi), the Secret Ingredient Noodle Soup (a really spicy and shiok kimchi seafood noodles) and the Fun Sliders (which look like buns, but are actually brownie smores). Skip the drinks as they might look really thirst-quenching, but they are watered down and are not worth the price tag.

Kumoya x Mr. Men And Little Miss

Kumoya’s a cafe that is not dedicated to one particular character – the characters take turns to visit the cafe! Coming up next is the Mr. Men And Little Misses, who will be donning the Sarong Kebaya just for her trip here. Previously the cafe has seen Miffy, tokidoki, Care Bears, Cinnamoroll make an appearance.

TBH, we aren’t too sure about this dish, but the others look great

You can expect food like nasi lemak, otah, chilli crab pasta, pink mac and cheese and tempura fish burger. The cafe will also undergo a facelift and you’ll be able to snap pics with all your Mr Men and Little Miss gang.

DC Comics Superhero Cafe

Is it a plane? Is it a Superman? It’s a chicken! Source

Paying tribute to Justice League is the DC Comics Superhero cafe. Finally something that is not all cute-sy or pink! We kinda forgot about this one, and then remembered that technically the DC Superheroes are characters too.

The food tends to be catered towards Western tastes, with pizzas and chicken wings on the menu. The food is nothing special, although the desserts are slightly better than the mains and they do really pay attention to detail – even the coasters are emblazoned with the symbols of the various superheroes. Worth a visit if you’re a superhero fan, but don’t expect a lot from the food.

There’s a store full of superhero gear that you can stock up on, or you can just bring home your coasters as a free souvenir.

Cartoon Network Cafe by The Soup Spoon Union

The only question we have is…. WHERE’S BLISS? Source

And then we remembered… Cartoon Network also has a themed cafe here dedicated to The Powerpuff Girls! And We Bare Bears! And Jake and Finn!

We are as excited to see Grizz’s face as he is to see us. Source

As much as we wished that this cafe could be permanent, it’s only going to be at Waterway Point Mall till early next year. All the characters from Adventure Time, We Bare Bears, Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls get their own dishes, so there’s something for everyone even though you all might like different cartoons. Make sure you go down to try their Powerpuff Potpies and Adventure Time BBQ Drumlets. A lot of the food is quite similar to The Soup Spoon menu (it is opened by them after all).

We’ll take the colouring book, the plushie and the cap please. Source

Psst, we even heard that there’s a colouring corner for cartoon sketching! Definitely something we don’t usually see at character cafes.

Charlie Brown Cafe

Source

This one’s a comic book character, but still as cute! Charlie Brown gets his own cafe because Snoopy has been hogging the limelight for way too long. If you like Snoopy, you’ll be glad to know that there is also a huge Snoopy figurine waiting at the entrance for you to take photos with him.

Besides all the normal Charlie Brown & Gang themed food, the cafe also does birthday cakes and other cakes for you to pre-order. If you’re a lone diner, you might be able to enjoy your meal accompanied by a huge Snoopy plushie and free wifi.
