Are you in a #WorkFromHome situation? We aren’t, but if you notice that our Instagram‘s a little quieter these days, it’s because plenty of beauty events have been postponed or cancelled this month, including Sephora’s very-coveted Sephora Press Day.
Everyone who loves beauty looks forward to it, and it’s the best time for beauty editors and writers to get acquainted with upcoming launches and key trends. We get to speak to brand founders, swatch items on the spot, and the best part? Walk away with a whole trolley (not even kidding) of beauty items to test out!
While this year’s press day was conducted on a much smaller scale with one-on-one meet-ups, we still received a ton of items to try — whether it’s skincare, makeup, or hair products. In the first of our Spring launches reviews, here’s one for all of their upcoming hair launches, coming to a Sephora near you!
Coco & Eve Like A Virgin Super Nourishing Coconut & Fig Hair Masque (212ml) and Tangle Tamer Set (not shown here)
$65
“This did a great job of softening and smoothing my hair, but I find that I use it up very quickly, which makes it a very expensive hair mask. The coconut smell is quite strong but that didn’t bother me. I’d save this for the night before an event, or when my hair is in serious state of rescuing.” — Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief
NYLON RECOMMENDS: Yes!
GOOD FOR: Dry, frizzy and dull hair.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Oil
Price TBC, launching 21 May 2020
““Put a rose inside and suddenly it looks expensive.” said my husband when he first saw this on the bathroom shelf. Yes, it is a very pretty bottle but unfortunately, that’s as good as this product gets. The oil itself feels nice and light (that’s good, right!), but did absolutely nothing for my dry, frizzy, lifeless hair. Perhaps it’s because my hair is in such a bad state, it needs intense rescuing (like from the Coco & Eve mask); and this hair oil is for luckier peeps with healthier hair. By the way, this smells like toilet freshener — says at least three people in office who gave it a whiff. So, no.” — Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief
NYLON RECOMMENDS: No. 🙁
GOOD FOR: Healthier hair types, you lucky people, you.
Joon Saffron Hair Elixir
$73
“Here’s another hair oil with a flower inside the bottle. The product looks nice, and it smells less intense than the Briogeo version. But the texture is also richer and oilier, and also did close to nothing for my dry hair. Aren’t these things meant to hydrate hair? At least a little bit?” — Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief
“It’s so pretty I wanted to like it! Especially after hearing that this Sephora online-exclusive brand is new to the market. Its formula is inspired by the beauty rituals of Persian women, with the combination of hair-strengthening and antioxidant-rich saffron flower, pistachio seed oil, rose oil and argan oil, all of which are very nourishing for the hair. While rather lightweight on the hair, the texture of the product felt like a dense oil when dispensed from the dropper. My hair didn’t feel very much smoother after too, not immediately at least. It did feel a little bit softer after about 5 minutes, but not enough a radical change that I’d recommend this.” — Amelia Tan, Deputy Editor
NYLON RECOMMENDS: No. 🙁
GOOD FOR: I’m guessing lucky people with better hair than us.
Percy & Reed Radiance Revealing Invisible Dry Shampoo (200ml)
Price TBC, launching 21 May 2020
“Now in a larger 200ml size, that’s what’s new. Other than that, this decently-priced product has been on Sephora shelves for a while, with reviews to back it up. The best part about this is that it removes excess oils without that chalky powder that sometimes gets left behind — yes, invisible indeed. No embarrassing residue. After spraying, the difference is instantaneous; my hair felt immediately lifted at its roots, without that crunchy, dry feeling of hair spray. My only drawback — and I don’t know whether this counts as an issue — but it dispenses really loudly, so I felt self-conscious using this in office.” — Amelia Tan, Deputy Editor
NYLON RECOMMENDS: Can’t go wrong.
GOOD FOR: Those who’d like fresh hair after a workout. If you have darker hair.
Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Working Serum
$27 (50ml)
“Finally! A hair product that works! And is actually affordable! This serum did smooth down my hair, and made the frizzy ends look less frizzy. And yes, it does feel weightless! At the time of writing this review, this serum is sold out on Sephora.sg, but the brand does has a whole range of products with its “Zip-Up Technology”, which is “a strengthening complex, designed to ‘zip up’ split ends and smooth the appearance of damaged cuticles while helping to protect hair from environmental stressors and colour fade.” — says the brand’s website. Sounds good, and I think it actually works.” — Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief
NYLON RECOMMENDS: Yes!
GOOD FOR: If you want sleeker hair just before styling.
IGK 1-800-Hold-Me No Crunch Flexible Hairspray
$40, launching 12 March 2020
“I love IGK products — especially the “Expensive Amla Oil Hi-Shine Topcoat”, which is actually expensive at $43. So when a new IGK product gets in my hands, I have high expectations of it. As the packaging implies, this hairspray offers flexible hold; so don’t expect a strong hold. It also states that you get “hi-shine with micro-light reflectors”, but this magic never happened for me. My hair was no less or more shiny after using this. Maybe I need to spray A LOT of it to get the shine — but I don’t want to do that. Because the smell bothers me. It has that typically chemical hairspray smell that I can definitely do without the entire day.” — Adele Chan, Editor-in-Chief
NYLON RECOMMENDS: Not really.
GOOD FOR: Light hold.
