Virgil Abloh, purveyor of all things cool, has done it again. With the new LVxNBA capsule collection, we’re looking at a series of effortlessly cool ready-to-wear, accessories, and footwear that embodies the spirit of basketball, with a Louis Vuitton twist — only for true ballers, of course. The NBA logo and other key basketball motifs are all here, though now seamlessly integrated into menswear styles. And now that the LA Lakers have won the NBA Championship, it’s only apt that we’re seeing the full collection, which will be launched on 20 November here at the Louis Vuitton ION Orchard boutique.
We can’t really talk about Louis Vuitton without mentioning ‘monogram’ right? Here, you’ll find the NBA logo, now reimagined as a monogram print, not unlike LV’s signature one, in a houndstooth-like style across tailoring, shirting and a tie, both in bold black-and-white and a more subtle dark grey palette. Another piece we particularly enjoy is a cosy varsity knit jacket that features the LV initials on the back. Score!
Eagle-eyed observers will also spot three distinct styles, which happen to be Abloh’s take on a player’s wardrobe — a casual grey cashmere tracksuit, featuring the distinct curved lines of a basketball, embodies the baggy loungewear pieces players like to don while travelling to their match; the blue leather jacket, with a subtle LV monogram, is ideal just before arriving on court; while the formal menswear attire will have anyone looking especially dapper during a post-match press conference. You can, of course, do like The King in any scenario in your life.
While Abloh gets real creative for the RTW pieces, you can say that the leather goods and accessories seem to be going the more classic route. Then again, these signature Louis Vuitton silhouettes will probably be the first items to be snapped up! We’re definitely eyeing that Keepall, which sees a netted side detail similar to a basketball hoop. Same for the boxy Mini Soft Trunk, slung across the body.
Other functional bag designs play on the colours red, white, and blue, on top of LV’s classic monogram, including the Christopher backpack and Nil messenger, and a new multi-pocket backpack with contrast straps. Chunky gold chains and bracelets also feature prominently, while there’s probably a shoe that fits your fancy, from classic loafers to lace-up boots. All you need to net courtside cool, really.
