Remember the days of sticky lip glosses that grab hold of your hair the moment a slight breeze blows? Even if the 2000s are back on trend, we declare that outdated product long over. No one likes that unpleasant goopy feeling, and yet, there’s still a way of achieving the lip gloss’ glorious shine: enter, lip lacquers.
Far more pigmented and creamier than the lip gloss, the high-shine finish of lip lacquers have gained popularity this side of the decade, since they make your lips look plump and fresh, with a 3-D sheen. We like that the best ones retain the colour in the tube as well, so you’re always gonna get what you see — much like CHANEL Beauty‘s latest series of lip colours, the Rouge Allure Laque.
In 20 luxurious shades, the CHANEL Rouge Allure Laque gives you extreme shine and intensity, with a comfortable texture that promises 12 hours of wear, more than enough to get you through your day. What they’ve giving us here is “satin shine”, which we’ve found to be superior to glosses, since these give an optimal lip lustre that looks more sleek than wet. You’ll like that these liquid lipsticks go on delicate and creamy, and in a single stroke too.
Here, the ultrawear texture follows your natural lip movements without cracking or the feeling of tightness, due to some key CHANEL technology: a supple mesh first traps finely-ground colour pigments, which is then coated with a blend of oils for continuous shine. On application, the oil evaporates, leaving a sheen of radiance that’s just as vibrant on the lips. An antioxidant complex of Sappan wood and vitamin E further keeps lips hydrated.
And while you can clearly see the colours in the glossy, sheer tubes of ombré black lacquer, nothing beats seeing these colours on actual lips. Ahead, we present to you an electrifying moodboard of all 20 shades of the CHANEL Rouge Allure Laque, for your visual pleasure.

Our verdict? Some shades will no doubt appeal more to you than others, but we do think the rosy, red, and nude shades stand out — a particular universal favourite among the NYLON team has to be No. 60, a “luminous iridescent beige” that’s winsome for its sheer colour and subtle glimmery specks of shine. We also found that some colours, especially the berry shades, tend to go on slightly sheer at first, much like a lip stain, though these can be built up to your preferred intensity; which makes it easy for makeup beginners who might be intimidated by the darker hues.
When tested on my own lips, I like how the Rouge Allure Laque colours weren’t overpowering and buildable — you could layer them over without cracking. The curved and soft applicator also easily followed the natural shape of my lips, dispensing just the right amount of product so the formula isn’t cloying, but goes on smooth and light.
