5 Alternative Ice Creams For This Blazing Weather

We’ll admit; the weather’s been a little erratic lately, yet through the sun and rain one thing remains consistent – that heat. It’s no wonder that in an environment like ours, we’re constantly snacking on icy desserts and cold treats just to stay cool (or at least that’s our excuse). Still, as much as we love a good ice cream cone, it’s always fun to venture beyond and try our, err, tongue at some more unique ice cream desserts. Here’s our pick for refreshing treats to beat the heat.

Ice Cream Burritos

Brrr-ito

It seems after the rise of the sushi burrito, people are becoming more determined than ever to fill burrito skins with just about anything. We aren’t complaining though! Especially when the savoury-sweet dessert is Ben & Jerry’s Brrr-ito, comprising ice cream of your choice wrapped in a soft waffle sheet. Yes, it’s essentially a soft ice cream cone, but the thrill of picking one up with both hands already makes half the meal. Try B&J’s latest flavour yet, the Choc Full of Ideasinc, made from chocolate and caramel ice creams with chocolate chip cookie dough, peanut butter cookie dough, and a crunchy cookie swirl – sure to send you reeling from ice cream burrito awesomeness.
Brrr-ito, $12.90, available at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops till July.

Here’s one that’s been circulating the dessert market for some time now. For lovers of quirky bazaar food, the rolled ice cream trend originated from the street markets and dessert peddlers of Thailand, combining taste and entertainment for a 100baht-worthy experience. You’ll be surprised to find how low-cost the actual process of making rolled ice cream is – made entirely on an iced grill, condensed milk forms the base of the rolls, before your toppings of choice (anything from cornflakes to nutella, and even to Thai milk tea powder) are mixed in and ferociously mashed together, Cold Stone Creamery style. The end result is 5-6 rolls of pure gastronomic heaven. It looks cute to begin with; so you’ll be surprised to find that it tastes even better than it looks.
Try Happy Rollies at the Geylang Ramadan Bazaar while you still can, or pop by Coyoro in the North if that’s more convenient.

Froyo Bun

In another strange fusion of sweet and savoury, yogurt bar Squeezed! has created the humble froyo bun – or more specifically, the #briyo bun, a quirky half-brioche, half fro-yo concoction. It’s tart, all-natural frozen yogurt sandwiched between two toasted brioche buns, and is perfect for when you’re in the mood for something cold and filling. It comes in two savoury options, but obviously we’re going for the four sweet dessert buns, which may look sinful but actually pack a pretty nutritional punch. We’re surprised these haven’t swept the Instagram community off their feet yet, but then again, you never know when an age-old food item suddenly becomes a trend.
Briyo bun, from $5.80, available at 83 Punggol Central, #B1-K8, Singapore 828761, 10am to 10pm daily. Squeezed.sg

Cookies! Macarons! Bread! Let’s sandwich ice cream into everything! screams the dessert world fervently. Fine by us; the latest ice-cream-between-something to have hit our shores brings the luxurious macaron into the spotlight. Larger than the average macaron, these ice cream sandwiches seem to have originated from South Korea. We’re going to take a guess here and say these probably taste like your $1 green bread ice cream sandwiches from the local ice cream man – but with a little more glamour.
Macaron Ice Cream, $6, Chicken Up@Tampines, 2 Tampines Central 5 #01-44 to 47, Century Square, Singapore 529509, 11.30am to 11pm daily. Chicken-up.com.

Nitrogen ice cream might seem gimmicky, what with it being frozen instantly with liquid nitrogen at -195 degrees, but the fresh natural ingredients guarantee great flavour and creamy textures. And now, there’s no more need to shell out a fortune just to try such “novelty” ice cream. We’ll be honest: the day Mini Melts abruptly left our shores, somewhere in the late 2000s, was a tough one; so you can bet we’re stoked to finally have it back. Newly reopened and better than ever, Mini Melts presents the kick of nitrogen ice cream in a fun, multi-coloured way our nostalgic little hearts can appreciate. Light and refreshing, they’re perfect for an on-the-go snack – and the hundreds of little balls will definitely make any 90s kid squeal in fond memory.
Mini Melts Singapore, VivoCity #B2-K7, 10am to 10pm daily.
