If you’ve been having Gossip Girl withdrawal symptoms for the past four years, then Marvel may just have the perfect remedy for you. The creators of the popular soap drama – Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – will work with Marvel to bring the ‘Runaways’ to Hulu, in a historic first for the video-on-demand service (it’s never had a Marvel TV show before).
Based on the fan-favourite comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Runaways is a story about a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are actually part of an evil organization known at “The Pride”. After spying on their parents, they too, figure out that they have powers. In the group, there’s an alien, a telepathic dinosaur and even an eleven year old with super human strength.
But what makes the show’s premise pretty similar to Gossip Girl, is that besides revolving around teens, there are characters who have to put aside their differences and work together in order to achieve a common goal. In both cases, that comes in the form of dealing with parents. These similarities are also probably why Marvel’s top brass decided to employ the help of GG’s co-founders.
“We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie – who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience – write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”
While we’re extremely excited for the Runaways’ debut, there’s yet to be an official release date for the television series. We’re just hoping that it won’t be too long before that happens!
