Mattel Releases its Most Diverse Range of Barbie Dolls Yet

Say what you will about Barbie, but there’s no denying one thing about the iconic doll: she’s looked pretty much the same since 1959.
Thankfully, all that’s about to change with Mattel’s latest line-up of Barbie dolls, the company’s most diverse range of all time (we’re talking about more than just new clothing here by the way).

Mattel’s new line-up, titled Barbie’s Fashionistas collection, features 40 new dolls with seven body types, 11 skin tones, and 28 different hairstyles to look out for. It’s another step forward for the toy company regarding diversity, after Barbie was given different body types ranging from curvy to petite in January last year.

What’s even cooler about this new move though is that Barbie isn’t the only one getting a makeover. Ken himself is going to look very different. There’s cornrow Ken, geeky Ken, and uh…wait for it, a man bun Ken. Maybe that one should’ve been discussed at the Mattel office a little while longer huh?

Well, whatever. At least Barbie gets to rock new hairstyles like an afro, a partially shaved head, and blue hair. Besides, there’s no doubt that this new Fashionistas collection shows that Mattel is moving in the right direction, even if it’s taken them more than a few decades to do so. Better late than never we say.
If you want to get your hands on each fashionista, they’ll set you back a very reasonable price of US$9.99, so gathering the whole bunch shouldn’t prove to be too expensive. Each doll is available now at barbie.mattel.com.
