The spontaneity, the lack of instant gratification – there’s just something romantic about shooting film. It’s a feeling that one can only get with a pure analog device, although that may soon be a thing of the past with the digitisation of film.
Yep, you read correctly. Film is going digital (again), with more brands catering to the medium’s resurgence. Iconic camera brand Yashica recently launched the Y35 – a digital camera that uses fake “film rolls”, while Fujifilm’s SQ10 is a digital/film hybrid instax. The latest to join the game is “I’m Back” – a new adaptor for old film cameras.
This innovative device allows you to shoot digital photos and video with a 35mm analog camera. Normally, a film camera’s lens sends light to a filmstrip on the camera’s back. With”I’m Back”, an LCD screen and digital sensor is placed where the filmstrip would be, and with an adjustment system, you can shoot digital imagery.

After which, your files will be saved to an SD card. You can then view them via the LCD screen or an attached smartphone. There are, however, a few limitations that come with using a digital back. For instance, with a back attached to your film camera, you can only physically use the shutter release and aperture control.
In terms of compatibility,”I’m Back” can be used with old models such as the Nikon F series, Minolta Maxxum 7000, Olympus om10, Pentax cameras, and Praktica B200.
Right now,”I’m Back” is undergoing a Kickstarter campaign, which you can check out here. As with any crowdfunding campaign, there’s always a risk that the product might not come through, so do take note of that.
