NYLON Team Picks: Who We're Channelling This Halloween

Like most Singaporeans, the NYLON team isn’t exactly a select group of ghoulish die-hards that are all about dressing up for Halloween. Still, we thought it’d be a fun challenge to each stitch an entire ensemble together to take after a few of our favourite individuals (and… fruit) across entertainment and politics. What we’re definitely not going for here are elaborate costumes – just outfits that mirror each character’s signature style, with easy pieces you can wear long after the party’s over. Ahead, we’ve culled several items to give us a hand in channelling our character picks.

Joel Conceicao, Writer
Character: Kim Jong Un

There’s nothing like a nuclear-crazed, megalomaniac dictator to kick off Halloween. The world’s doomed, and Kim Jong Un is at the forefront of it all. Who cares if ghosts, demons, and spirits are scary? They would cease to exist once Mr. Kim J goes trigger happy. Hence, everyone’s favourite commie will be my Halloween pick this year. I kind of got that whole centre parting thing going on (I just need to spam the gel to make it sort of Kim-esque), so clothing is easy. I’m picking a Grey Skinny Suit Jacket from Topman in extra large (I do need a fat suit y’know), Cotton Pants from Kent & Crew, as well as a pair of Ray-Ban’s to complete the look. Hey, you got to dress well for world destruction, right?
1. Topman New Fit Grey Skinny Suit Jacket, $169; 2. Kent & Crew Cotton Pants, $50.90; 3. Ray-Ban RX5355F Square Glasses, $230

Jade Yeo, Writer
Character: Eleven from Stranger Things (S1)

Since season two of Stranger Things landed on Netflix yesterday, it’s no surprise that one of us would wanna go as Eleven this Halloween. I’ve grown out my buzz cut a fair bit at this point, but I’d say it’s still a suitable short crop to kick off the look. We all witnessed Eleven’s E.T. moment when she donned a pastel pink dress in the first season, and while that item of clothing is indeed the farthest thing from my aesthetic, the outfit simply won’t scream “badass telepathic child” without it. Just like how I’d style a feminine dress in daily life, here it is juxtaposed with a navy men’s coach jacket (I know it’s so dark it’s almost black, okay – leave me be) and some white Converse Chuck Taylors to help dodge any demogorgons fast. To nail her look, I’m even throwing in a box of frozen waffles as my clutch bag for the night, and of course, some fake blood from Artfriend to mimic Eleven’s telepathy-induced nose bleeds.
1. Tokichoi Geometric Print Dress With Tie, $39.90; 2. A for Arcade Shell Coach Jacket in Navy, $119; 3. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Hi Core Sneakers, $69.90 ; 4. Kellogg’s Eggo Thick And Fluffy Waffles, $6.90

Michelle Ng, Writer
Character: A banana

michelle

I love dressing up and if you ask all my friends, they’ll tell you the same. I always plan way ahead, and this year, I’ll be going bananas. Okay, as a banana, cos there’s only one of me and no one ever wants to be my B2 although they all like to laugh at me after. Getting a suit or one-piece costume is always the easiest because you don’t have to worry about getting too many bits and pieces for one costume (I’m kinda lazy that way too). I bought my banana costume off ezbuy, and I think that was the best $10 I ever spent. #soworthit If you want to take your costume to the next level, you can also include some face makeup. You can paint your entire face yellow, which sounds a bit overkill and not to mention it’ll be a nightmare to remove too. Go for something more subtle with a touch of yellow eyeshadow or a swipe of yellow on your lips. Finish off with some gold highlighter on your cheeks to be a glam banana!
1. Banana suit, $11.90; 2. Fenty Beauty Killawatt Highlighter in Trophy Wife, $50; 3. 3INA The Cream Eyeshadow in 301, $19

Pailin Boonlong, Writer
Character: Eminem

Why wouldn’t you dress as Eminem? Besides being one of the best-selling artists, he also produces some pretty solid rhymes – just check out the complexity of Lose Yourself. He’s got the beat, the chorus, and the rhyme scheme all down pat. Mostly, he’s my pick for Halloween because of his casual but recognisable style. I’m not too fussed about dressing up and it’ll be nice to lounge around in a pair of sweats, loose white tee, and oversized zip-up dark hoodie. All under the excuse that I’m dressed as Eminem. To dress like him, I would wear a fairly non-descript black snapback from OBEY with a hoodie tugged over it. I’ll also get a pair of Nike Air Jordans to pull together the entire look.
1. OBEY Quality Dissent Snapback Cap, $49; 2. Nike Men’s Air Jordan 1 Mid Shoes, $179

Patrene Mathieu, Designer
Character: Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones

patrene

If you were to tell the average GoT fan that your favourite character is either Daenerys or Jon Snow, they’d be inclined to roll their eyes. Yes, she’s indeed a popular halloween choice for about ninety percent of the female side of the fandom, but hear me out – this woman has become a prominent feminist icon in pop culture. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t at least passively rooting for her as she made her steady rise from being an exiled child to becoming the Breaker of Chains we all know and love. From single-handedly reducing a tent of warrior men to nothing but ashes, to burning an army to the ground (sorry not sorry, Lannisters), there’s no stopping this conqueror from proving that she’s so much more than just the ‘Mother of Dragons’. Of course, no dragon queen would be complete without some representation of her title, so throw on some earrings that resemble your babies, from birth to present. Embody the Targaryen colours that would force people to bend the knee by donning a black military-esque coat paired with dark red boots topped off with an arrogant gaze to give off the air that you would fight for what you want, and you will take it, with fire and blood.
1. Miss Selfridge Black Double Breasted Coat, $139; 2. Dorothy Perkins Burgundy Anya Heeled Boots, $89.90; 3. Blackheart Dragon & Egg Earring Set, US$5.90

Nurasyqin Sedik, Media Executive
Character: Hayley Williams in Paramore’s “Told You So” music video

I personally don’t celebrate Halloween or have ever been to a Halloween party but if I were to dress up for one, I’d be Hayley Williams, the front woman of my favourite Pop Punk band, Paramore. I especially chose her look from their “Told You So” music video because I’m obsessed with her look in this one! She pulls off the (almost) full red ensemble so well and she exudes so much confidence and feistiness, and I love it. Her look’s pretty on trend too with the beret and tinted yellow glasses. However for my Halloween look, instead of wearing the yellow glasses, I’d go for the make up look she wore in their “Hard Times” music video instead. The blue and yellow eye look would be so much fun to create and I think the colours would go perfectly well with my red outfit.
1. ZALORA Pocket Detail Shift Dress, $34.90; 2. ROC Boots Australia Lash White Boots, $249.90; 3. ASOS Plain Bib, $21.55; 4. Kangol Logo Red Beret, $75.43

Marcus Lee, Editorial Assistant
Character: Gru from Despicable Me

marcus

I’m not someone who particularly looks forward to dressing up for Halloween every year. When the time comes where I need to dress up for a party, I tend to go as characters whose outfits I can easily recreate with fashion items I already have in my closet or invest in purchases I know I will get many uses out of. Gru from Despicable Me has an iconic outfit that consists of clothing which are relatively easy to find. I just need to throw on a dark grey bomber jacket, skinny black jeans, a pair of smart lace-up shoes and a white-and-grey striped scarf and I’m ready to go. I also don’t need to put on any face paint or make-up and can be rest assured I’ll feel comfortable in my look because I’m wearing actual clothes. If people can’t tell at first glance who my character is, I’ll do my best impersonation of Gru’s accent, which can double-up as a great conversation starter!
1. Burton Menswear London Dark Grey Smart Bomber Jacket, $126; 2. Topman Washed Black Stretch Tapered Fit Jeans, $89.90; 3. ESPRIT Woven Stripe Soft Scarf, $39.95; 4. River Island Black Lace Up Smart Shoes, $74.90

Adli Sazali, Editorial Assistant
Character: Jughead Jones from Riverdale

adli

Adapted from Riverdale, Jughead’s look is definitely a 2017 hit, especially since season 2 of the CW series aired only recently too. If you’re into the whole somber and melancholic vibe when it comes to a Halloween costume, this character’s look definitely fits the bill. Personally, I’ve always been a fan of tying my flannel shirts around my waist whenever it gets too humid over the course of the day, and the one thing Jughead always feature in his looks is just that. It’s super easy to pull off too, because he wears dark colours like grey, navy or black, which make out more half the colours in my wardrobe. But the most iconic piece of all has got to be his beanie. If you’re going all in for the look, you have got to cut a crown into a dark grey beanie in order to pull off Jughead. Or you could just order the original WB Jughead Beanie from Amazon. I think millenials would definitely pick a character from their favourite Netflix series this year, and donning a Jughead look is not only easy to pull off, but would definitely slay on Instagram.
1. Uniqlo Mens Flannel Checked Long Sleeve Shirt, $29.90; 2. Doridoodle Crochet Jughead Crown Hat Beanie, US$40
