We all know that one person who would skip out on all the entrees and main dishes at the buffet spread and head straight for the dessert table. This one is for you – the sweet tooth.
Fat Lulu’s has not been getting much attention in the dessert scene, but we are definitely leaning towards the sweet treats after having tried them for ourselves. Not only are their desserts absolutely delectable-looking (read: Insta-worthy!), they light up your tastebuds in ways unimaginable. And no, we’re not talking about popping candy that they use in some of their desserts. Chef Song, the resident pastry chef at Fat Lulu’s is constantly challenging himself by pairing unexpected ingredients that actually tastes good.
Joining the dessert menu is the ultimate indulgence – the Fat Lulu’s Dessert Pig Out. The set meal consists of 10 different desserts; some re-imagined classics from their existing menu and some new additions.
Berries And White Chocolate
If you grew up in Singapore, you’ll recognise a lot of the flavours from Childhood. The hazelnut popsicle reminded us of the coveted Nutella that we were allowed to have as a spread in our breakfast sandwiches if we were lucky, and its served with homemade chocolate cookies and raspberry granita – to remind us of berry flavoured drinks and cough syrup, we’re guessing. This dessert also comes topped with some candy that’ll give you a little surprise when you take your first bite – you’ve got to try it out find out what we’re talking about!

Just in case you started thinking about all the calories you’ll be ingesting, be reassured that the desserts are bursting with antioxidants. Instead of ice creams, there are also sherbets and sorbets that help to reduce the calorie count. So go right ahead and indulge your sweet tooth, because you deserve it. The Lemongrass Jelly, this time inspired by Chef Song’s Asian heritage, takes on a more herbal and aromatic dessert. The refreshing jelly is the exact kind of escape we need from the heat, and the calamansi sorbet just melts right in our mouth.

Passionfruit And Hazelnut that will remind of a deconstructed Toblerone, but crunchier

Whether you prefer Asian flavours or Western flavours; there’ll be something for everyone! The Green Tea opera is the classic opera cake with a touch of Japanese flavour thrown in that took Chef Song many, many months of experimentation to perfect.

Usimarit (Tiramisu)
You won’t see beetroot on a dessert menu often, but here it is! Beetroot doesn’t even make most vegetable entrees because it isn’t a really popular vegetable to begin with. Most people don’t know this, but beets are actually quite sweet. It’s the earthiness that masks the sweetness and turns people off. Chef Song managed to come up with a sweet and savoury pairing that might just get you interested in beets again. The beetroot and blueberry sorbet brings out the natural sweetness in the beets, and is paired with a lemon cream cheese mousse to fully round out the flavour. Add in a little crunch with some crumble, and you’ve got something similar to a deconstructed cheesecake. This is the one dish that you die-die cannot miss!
A must-try new addition – Beetroot And Cheese
A delightful mix of berries and beetroot sorbet to mask the earthiness of the beet, with a little chocolate root still attached
It might seem like a lot – what with the chocolate and various flavours going around the table – but we tried all 10 dishes in one go and we can safely say you won’t feel like you’ve just eaten your way through 10 dishes when you’re done. None of the desserts are very heavy on the tastebuds as Chef Song incorporates delicate touches like sorbet and foam to cleanse your palette and prepare you for the next dish. Take the Mocha Choux for example – it’s topped with light chantilly chocolate cream that balances out the mocha cream inside puff. We could eat it all day without feeling jelat at all!

Here’s one for those who like their alcohol. The Apple & Champagne gives an sharp, boozy kick with some champagne foam to pair with the apple sorbet, and is the perfect dessert to finish off your guilty indulgence on a light touch.

Each of the desserts are in full-size portions, although you would want to bring along a couple of friends to tackle this 10 course dessert menu. Designed as a shared course meal, up to 4 people are allowed to share one set of Fat Lulu’s Dessert Pig Out. No matter whether you are one or you have three friends with you, the portions will still be the same (it’s not buffet style).
If you have an additional person, all you have to do is top up an additional $15++ and you’ll be able to choose two more desserts from the ala-carte menu. Also debuting alongside the Pig Out menu is three new dishes. We’ve got our eyes on The Three Porn Stars – not because of the name, but because of our love of popsicles. These are the only porn stars that we’ll keep coming back for!
Three Porn Stars, $28 – featuring a playful trio of white chocolate, hazelnut and Ipoh white kopi popsicles
The popsicles are full-sized popsicles, and you’ll have to rotate them around the table, with everyone getting a bite of each flavour (not recommended if you don’t like sharing food). Our favourite was the Ipoh white kopi, which is quite strong in flavour. The hazelnut is slightly lighter although equally nutty, which all Nutella lovers will love. Between each popsicle, be sure to get a taste of the passionfruit & prosecco foam which was designed as a palette cleanser.

The other two new desserts, the Melaka Boleh and Mango & Pony, are also worth a bite. If you are good with puns, you’ll be able to tell what the desserts are from the name. If not you can ask the waiters for a little laugh!
Melaka Boleh! $18
Mango & Pony, $18
