Rejoice 90’s Kids; Tamagotchi is Coming to Your Smartphone

Besides the enthusiastic, and sometimes, heated discussions of which was the best Pokémon (that discussion ends with Mewtwo, enough said), the daily life of a 90’s primary school kid consisted mostly of going to school and home again. But of course, that daily routine was interposed with the phenomenon known as Tamagotchi.

Inside of classrooms and out, the digital pet that you had to feed, clean, and put to sleep received more attention than any school textbook ever did, and one generation later, it’s back to do the same. This time, however, the Tamagotchi is shedding its 8-bit skin and turning full 3D as a smartphone game on iOS and Android.
Called My Tamagotchi Forever, the free-to-download game is set in an overly cheerful looking and colourful place called “Tamatown”, sporting a visual aesthetic that’s pretty much similar to Nintendo’s latest mobile game, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. But that’s not the only difference from the old Tamagotchi series.

In Tamatown, you can make friends with other Tamagotchi’s. And there seems to be a new AR aspect about the game (as seen in the official trailer). Unfortunately, you can’t escape the inevitable (and unavoidable) cash cow that is free-to-download mobile games, as real currency is needed to unlock special items like costumes or food.
That said; if you’re interested in playing the game, you’ve got to wait till it officially launches in 2018. In the meantime, you can register on the game’s official website to become the inspiration for a new Tamagotchi character, which will eventually be added in the game.
