It goes without saying that Japan is the land of kawaii. And China is the copycat equivalent. The latter’s counterfeit rep has somewhat faded in recent years, but is back in full force with this “Chinchilla Bed”, a ridiculously cute futon that is surely a knock-off of Studio Ghibli’s titular character, Totoro, from My Neighbour Totoro.
Looking every single bit like Totoro, with the exception of fluffy grey fur, this China-made bed is available from sites like Taobao and Ali Express, and is probably the reason why it has so far managed to skirt awkward copyright issues. Oh, and the slightly off facial features played a part in going through a legal loophole too.
Still, despite the lack of originality, it’s hard to deny that the bed is something you wouldn’t want to snuggle in. There’s a tiny slit (resembling a kangaroo’s pouch) that you can tuck yourself in, and it looks just like the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday at home, whether you’re on a Netflix binge, or reading a really good book.
And it’s incredibly affordable too. The largest futon in this range, which measures 2.4-metres by 2-metres, and is bigger than a Super King Size bed, only costs 552 yuan (approximately $112) – a real steal if you ask us. It also includes Chinchilla cushions and a detachable tail, which would make for a really great bolster.
So if you don’t mind not getting legit Totoro merchandise, then this adorable futon bed will more than suffice. At the very least, this is the closest you’ll get to recreating that famous scene where Mei falls asleep on Totoro’s furry belly in the movie. Interested? Head over to Tabao’s website now.
