Light introduces its e-ink Light Phone III with camera, 5G connectivity and fingerprint ID

If you’ve ever wanted to go back to basics with simple functionality for your mobile phone, the Light Phone III might just be what you’re seeking.

Having experience making phones since 2014, Light’s mission is to create devices that does not conform to the society standard of a mobile phone, cutting out on things such as social media, internet and email, that too often consume our attention in a day.

Promising to make “going light” even easier for new users, Light is introducing the Light Phone III, in January 2025.

At its core, the Light Phone III (USD $799, approx. S$1,084) is a simple phone which uses an e-ink black and white interface on a larger matte OLED display which is optimal for texting and using the simple tools of LightOS.

The Light Phone III is also built around a user-customisable menu of optional tools under LightOS to ensure a thoughtful experience. These include: Alarm, Calculator, Calendar, Directory, Directions, Hotspot, Music, Notes/Voice Memo, Podcast or Timer.

It does not, however, support platforms that are typically found on a smartphone such as Spotify, WhatsApp or Grab.

Unlike its predecessor, the Light Phone II, the Light Phone III now has a camera, inspired by the point-and-shoot film cameras, with a dedicated real shutter button, center focus and a fixed focal length.

The soon-to-be launched device also adds a metal frame, USB-C, fingerprint ID, a flashlight, 5G connectivity and an NFC chip to support a digital wallet and video calls with a front facing camera.

As the Light Phone III was made to last for years, it comes with an accessible battery that will be easy to replace, alongside the screen and USB port.

LIGHT PHONE III SPECS

The Light Phone III is available for PRE-ORDER now at a special price of USD $399 (approx. S$541) until 15 July. Estimated delivery for pre-orders is January 2025. For more information, click HERE.

PEDRO and Commune team up to create a limited edition tote bag repurposed from sofa leather

Blending the worlds of fashion and furniture design, fashion brand PEDRO has partnered with local furniture design and lifestyle company Commune to create a limited edition tote bag that is crafted using recycled sofa leather.

[CLICK ON THE IMAGES FOR MORE.]

Inspired by Commune’s iconic Aviate sofa, PEDRO has repurposed the offset leather from the furniture piece to fashion the Aviate Leather Tote Bag (S$179.90) that is both modern and functional for every day use. The finish and shade of each tote bag varies though, making each piece uniquely different from one another.

Every single cut and curve of the bag has also been carefully thought out, including the cut-out around the bag handle which is an interpretation of the sofa’s silhouette. The recycled leather of the bag is further complemented with the use of walnut wood for the handles, which have been responsibly sourced from managed forests.

This collaboration hopes to not only pioneer sustainable practices but also carry the message of a need for deeper connection to our environment and the value of materials that shape our shared world.

The PEDRO | Commune Aviate Leather Tote Bag is available ONLINE and at PEDRO 313@Somerset and Suntec City.
For a closer look at the inspiration behind the collaboration, you can visit Commune’s store at Milenia Walk to experience the Aviate Sofa first-hand.

Hands on with the Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s newly-introduced spatial computer

When I first saw the Apple Vision Pro, the Oculus Quest came to mind; but after spending some time discovering the Vision Pro and its many functions and apps, I realise this is a very different device, and one with a very specific audience.

Above: apple vision pro when worn.

WHAT IS IT

While the Vision Pro resembles a VR headset, it’s what Apple calls, a spatial computer. It’s an entire computer system viewed through the goggles, which to be honest, nobody really needs — but once you try it, you’ll want one because it’s so cool.

It also costs as much as a very high-end computer with a starting price of $5,299. In comparison, a VR headset like the Oculus Quest 3 will set you back $759 on Amazon, but its functions now seem limited when pitted against the Vision Pro, which really is in a league of its own.

Above: side profile of the vision pro, featuring the solo knitted band.

THE DESIGN

Trust Apple to create the sleekest, most expensive-looking headset, and the Vision Pro is certainly that. The front panel is a gorgeous, shimmering curved glass that displays a swirling celestial blue when the user is fully immersed in the device. It’s mesmerising to look at.

Above: the front view of the apple vision pro.

Vision Pro comes with two types of head bands to secure the device on your head — a Solo Knitted Band with a rib structure that cushions and stretches, and a Dual Loop Band that has an upper strap to keep the weight of the device off your face (this latter strap is our preferred pick).

Above: vision pro travel case.

THE FIT

The experience begins by personalising the fit of the Vision Pro to your face. It starts with a face scan that’s similar to the one that Face ID uses, then a Light Seal is magnetically attached to the device. If you wear spectacles and contact lenses, Apple recommends using your contacts with Vision Pro. Alternatively, Apple sells ZEISS Optical Inserts with prescription ($219) to replace your glasses, and these are made to fit perfectly within the Vision Pro to correct your eyesight while using the device.

The Light Seal does an excellent job of blocking out stray light from above and the sides. There’s a bit of light leakage at the bottom but you won’t notice it once you turn the Vision Pro on and all the screens hover in front of you.

Above: The light seal and digital crown.

The headset sits snug against the face and feels comfortable. After about 30 minutes of use with the Solo Knitted Band, it started to get a little heavy and I found myself having to adjust it periodically. For a longer period of use, or if you’re playing games with a lot of movement, I’d recommend wearing the Dual Loop Band for a more secure fit.

Manufacturers like Oculus suggest a 10-15-minute break every 30 minutes of use to avoid disorientation and any possible simulator sickness. There’s no such recommendation from Apple with the Vision Pro, but I’d still take breaks just to rest my head from the load of the headset. There’s no hard and fast rule here, so this boils down to common sense, which some children won’t have, so I’d keep this device away from kids to avoid a new digital obsession.

THE EXPERIENCE

This starts up just like an iPad would, with the “hello” sign to greet you. Then all the Apple apps you’re familiar with are displayed in a hovering page before you, which you can reposition with a click of the digital crown to the top right of the device.

Above: Navigating Vision os.

Selections are made by just moving your eyes and looking at what you want to select, and then tapping two fingers together to confirm the selection. The eye-tracking is incredible and very accurate, as is the motion sensor — this device doesn’t miss a beat. The operating system is intuitive too and as easy to use as an iPhone.

We tried out various apps including Photos (this was incredible to see pictures and videos on a large scale), Mindfulness (a guided meditation app that was rather trippy), and djay (this one blew us away with how easy and fun it was to mix music and in 3D!).

Above: movies on the vision pro are clear and lifelike.

I can imagine how immersive it would be to watch House of the Dragon’s season premiere on the Vision Pro, and I can only hope that Beat Saber will one day make it to the platform.

Above: no beat saber, but SYNTH RIDERS is available for vision pro.

WHO IS THE VISION PRO FOR?

The Vision Pro isn’t cheap, so it really starts with the people who can afford it, or who would sacrifice other expenses for this machine. It’s also for bone fide Apple fans who want to complete their circle of Apple products, and be the first to own any new device from the brand.

Above: if we had a vision pro, we’d take it on an airplane too.

If you rely heavily on a computer for work (that’s almost all of us), it’s unlikely that the Vision Pro will be your one and only computer system. It’s certainly not going to replace your laptop or desktop, but it’ll be more of an extension for entertainment. You’ll definitely use it to watch movies and play games, and occasionally calm yourself with the Mindfulness app.

Above: working on the vision pro.

Where the Vision Pro clearly beats out any other headset, is that it is clear. The visuals are crystal clear and stunning — just like the device itself. But would you pay $5,299 for it? It all comes back to whether you can and want to afford it.

Above: Watching movies on apple vision pro.
Apple Vision Pro is available to pre-order in Singapore, and will be available in Apple Store locations and for delivery beginning Friday, June 28.

LOEWE partners with Jonathan Bailey for a special edition tee to celebrate ‘The Shameless Fund’

LOEWE partners with actor Jonathan Bailey of Bridgerton fame, to release a special edition ‘Drink Your Milk’ T-shirt to celebrate the launch of Bailey’s new foundation, The Shameless Fund.

For every ‘Drink Your Milk’ T-shirt sold, LOEWE will make a donation to the foundation, which seeks to champion the rights of every LGBTQ+ person, so they can live authentically, love freely, and thrive without the burdens of discrimination, oppression, or shame.

The playful slogan is inspired by scenes from Bailey’s historical drama series, Fellow Travelers, which is based on the 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon. The story charts the decades-long romance between two men who first meet during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s.

“In a splat, the image of this tee shirt appeared in my head, fully formed, one fine morning. I knew Jonathan Anderson was the only person who could meet the joy, playfulness and sexiness; who could flip that vision into a reality. This is a very proud first of many collaborations for The Shameless Fund, a passion project that will whip up creative collaborations to raise cash and erase shame amongst the global LGBTQ+ community. I love Jonathan and I love LOEWE, and I LOVE this tee shirt. It’s for anyone who’s ever tasted milk.’” — Jonathan Bailey

Available 27 June in selected LOEWE stores and on LOEWE.COM.

On the Wings of Hermès shows in Singapore from 19-28 July 2024

“On the Wings of Hermès” is a poetic and cinematic performance that was created for the house by the Belgian duo of director Jaco Van Dormael, and choreographer Michèle Anne De Mey. Together with the Astragales dance company, “On the Wings of Hermès” is a magical performance blending dance, object theatre, music, and cinema.

After performances in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai, the world tour of this original creation will land in Singapore from 19th to 28th July, 2024, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre.

It starts with a dark space resembling a film studio, where the fable of Pegasus, the mythical winged horse, begins. Then the tale unfolds through seven performances, each with its own backdrop where Hermès objects come alive like graceful puppets.

A humorous opera is sung by a cast of Hermès “Kelly” bags; there’s a lyrical flight of interlacing gloves; and then a dance sequence depicting two entwined lovers carried away by the wind into a bright blue sky.

“This work metaphorically illustrates the lightness that is omnipresent at Hermès: in the delicate hands of our craftspeople sewing with two needles at once, in the elegance of materials and in the subtle notes of a perfume. It is an experience which sparks the imagination, designed by the artisans of dreams,” says Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Artistic Director of Hermès.

“on the wings of Hermès shows in Singapore from 19th to 28th July, 2024, at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre.
Admission is free and visitors can book their visit online at hermes.com.

Ace Hotel Sydney offers casual, cosy accommodation in the heart of Surry Hills

Surry Hills is one of those suburbs in Sydney that everyone falls in love with at first visit. It’s a cultural hub for the local fashion and cafe scene, and there’s that sense of community and inclusiveness with every pub, art gallery or market you explore. And along Wentworth Avenue is Ace Hotel, occupying a 1915, Chicago-style brick historic warehouse that was Australia’s first ceramic kiln discovery. The 19-storey, 264-room hotel was designed by Flack Studio, and debuted in 2022. The scheme is warm and homey, with a space that draws you in to want to discover more.

Above: The Lobby at ace sydney. shot on leica m11.

We love the hotel’s unique history, and even more so what it has become — a boutique hotel that serves the discerning traveller craving an experience more than what the typical chain hotel offers; but still with the luxuries that you’ll want in this modern age (eg. complimentary Wifi, restaurants on-site and a full free-standing bathtub in some of the larger rooms).

Above: One of the cosy room setups in ace sydney. shot on leica m11.

Ace Hotel Sydney has a bit of a rock-and-roll theme going on, with a turntable and curated vinyls in select rooms, and you can even request a D Angelico acoustic guitar to play with during your stay. These little touches are special, and you can’t help but feel like part of the cool crowd while staying here.

Above: the interior for the large room. shot on leica m11.

There are different types of accommodations to choose from based on budget (starting from AUD338/night as an Ace Member), and number of pax, of course. For example, if you’re bunking with a best friend, you can get a Double Double room that has a pair of double beds (from AUD462); for a couple with a young child, there’s a large two-room Suite for more space (from AUD730); and our personal pick — the Terrace (from AUD462) with floor to ceiling windows and a balcony to chill in with a glass of wine in hand, and to just breathe in the winter air to remind yourself you’re not in Singapore anymore.

Above: corridor to the bedrooms. shot on iphone 15 pro max.

While Surry Hills has an abundance of cool cafes and restaurants, several of them reside within the hotel’s premise itself. There’s KILN (named after the history of the building, of course), which is a restaurant and bar located 18 stories above Ace Hotel Sydney, and helmed by Chef-Partner Mitch Orr. The dishes are rooted in contemporary Australia cuisine, with hints of Italian, Japanese and Southeast Asian influences.

Above: the chef wasn’t around when we visited, so here’s a portrait of the beautiful franck who was at the reception desk at kiln. shot on leica m11.

Then there’s Loam, which serves All Day Breakfast from 7am to 2.30pm, and Australians do an incredible breakfast. You can count on toasted sourdough, free range eggs done any way, roast tomatoes, smashed avocado, full bacon rashers, potato rosti and more.

Above: loam restaurant in ace sydney. shot on leica m11.

If you want a quick sandwich and a coffee (or perhaps a draft beer with that sandwich), Good Chemistry, situated along Ace Hotel Sydney’s Foy Lane entrance is open daily from 7am to 3pm.

Virgin Australia now flies direct from Melbourne to Uluru, the heart of the “Red Centre” and one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks

Last November, Virgin Australia announced new direct flight routes between Melbourne and Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock), as well as Brisbane and Uluru, making it easier than ever to get to the heart of the Northern Territory’s arid “Red Centre”. We flew on Virgin Australia’s inaugural flight from Melbourne to Uluru on 6th June, 2024 to experience the service and convenience of getting to this sacred destination, and seeing the incredible sandstone island mountain for ourselves.

Above: View from virgin Australia’s inaugural flight from melbourne to Uluru. Shot on Leica M11.

Above: Reflection of our virgin australia flight from Melbourne to Uluru. Shot on Leica m11.

Flights between Melbourne and Uluru will operate up to four times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays; and to celebrate this new route, Virgin Australia is offering promotional fares starting from AUD $169 one way.

Above: Inside Virgin Australia’s flight between melbourne and Uluru. shot on apple iphone 15 pro max.

Above: the spectacular View of Uluru from the plane. when you fly in to Uluru from melbourne, try to secure a left window seat, as the aircraft will pass to the right of Uluru. shot on leica m11.

It’s a short 3 hours, 20 minutes flight going to Uluru, and an even shorter 2 hours 50 minutes returning to Melbourne. To monitor and manage the flights, we downloaded the Virgin Australia app (available for iOS and Android) and added our trips using the Booking Reference number.

Above: screenshots from The virgin australia app.

Above: You can connect to the virgin australia wifi network during the flight. This enables you to watch movies on your smartphone, and monitor the flight status.

If you’re planning a trip down to Australia, add Uluru to the itinerary; you should see this natural wonder at least once in your life. It is believed to be about 550-700 million years old (much older than dinosaurs), and it stands at 348m in height (taller than the Eiffel Tower, which is 330m) and measures around 9.4km in circumference (it’ll take roughly three and a half hours to walk one round).

Our visit to Uluru was hosted by Virgin Australia, in partnership with the Northern Territory Government, and Ayers Rock Resort, Uluru. With this new service from Virgin Australia, tourists are better connected to the spiritual heartland of Australia, and this ultimately supports the growth of the country’s Indigenous Tourism sector.

ABOUT ULURU

Uluru is the famous massive rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory, Central Australia. It was also given the name Ayers Rock by Sir William Gosse back in 1873, when he came across it while exploring. Uluru and its surroundings are home to the Aṉangu people, the Traditional Landowners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and is recognised with a UNESCO World Heritage listing for both cultural and natural values.

Plan a visit to Uluru during sunrise (7.11am) and sunset (6.12pm); this is when it appears to be in a whole spectrum of colours, because the sun’s rays reflect on the rock as the sun moves through the sky.

Kata Tjuṯa (meaning “many heads”), also known as The Olgas, is a group of large, domed rock formations located within Uluru-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. The site teems with diverse plant and animal life, and the spectacular geological formations that dominate the vast red sandy plain hold important stories and historical significance to the Aṉangu Aboriginal people.

STAY

Ayers Rock Resort is the main accommodation and experience provider at Uluru, and offers six options to stay at (from a lavish resort and self-contained apartments, to outback camping). We stayed at Sails In The Desert, a modern hotel showcasing Indigenous styling in every room.

EXPERIENCE

On our first night in Uluru, we were welcomed by the Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner and Cultural experience (from AUD $295 per adult). This begins with cocktails on arrival made with Beachtree Gin (an Indigenous-owned distillery), canapés while watching the sun set over Uluru and Kata Tjuṯa, a gourmet dinner hamper that’s served picnic-style in a degustation basket on an open-air platform, followed by a 20-minute immersive sound and light show that depicts the ancestral Mala story.

The entire experience takes around 3 hours (including travel from the hotel), and highlights from the meal include the award-winning Koala Gin from Beachtree Distillery, lemon myrtle crocodile curry pies, blackened pepper leaf kangaroo and smoked emu with saltbush chilli crust.

Above: I had the privilege of meeting Inawantji at the Virgin Australia event as well. She’s Aṉangu Pitjatjantjara Yanykuntjara, and the stories she must have must be incredible. Two days in Uluru isn’t enough.

In the early hours of the morning, we walked through the Field of Light exhibition, which sees 50,000 slender stems crowned with frosted-glass spheres that gently bloom with rhythms of coloured light.

The best way to capture photos of the entire park is on a helicopter tour. There are many plane and helicopter providers that offer tours over the park, and we were booked on Professional Helicopter Services that boasts a #1 rating in its service category.

PREPARE

The best time to visit Uluru is during the cooler months between May to September. You’ll be less uncomfortable exploring the Park under the sun, plus there will be fewer flies. We visited in Winter during June, where temperatures dipped to 4°C at night and in the early morning, with winds making it feel even colder.

Wear layers and bring a jacket to stay warm, and comfortable walking shoes that you’re familiar with. Add on a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, and a water bottle to stay hydrated. Lastly, bring insect repellent.

WHERE TO STAY IN MELBOURNE

If you’re travelling from Melbourne and plan to stay a few nights there, consider QT Melbourne in the heart of the city along Russell Street. It’s within walking distance from Melbourne Central, right next door to Chinatown (where there’s incredible food!), and it’s a 5-star hotel with all the modern conveniences and amenities to keep you comfortable while away from home.

I was booked on LIMOCENTRAL for transport between the airport and QT Melbourne. It’s a comfortable and efficient way to get to your destination; the drivers are professional and polite, and always on time.
