W Sydney at Darling Harbour features iconic curved architecture, ultra-modern interiors and an immersive experience

Staying at any W Hotel is always an exciting experience filled with surprises. The brand’s DNA is to align the design and spirit of the property to the pulse of the city it’s in, and offer that sense of originality and curiosity. W Sydney is one of W Hotel’s newest launches (it opened in October 2023), and resides in the famous Darling Harbour, adjacent to Sydney’s city centre.

Just based on its prime location in a tourist hotspot, don’t expect budget prices (the smallest City View Room starts from AUD441/night), but you will get what you pay for — a luxurious stay with the best-in-class service, incredible views to the harbour and city, an impressive selection of restaurants including 2am: dessertbar by Janice Wong (what a great local representation!), and every other hotel facility one would expect like an extensive spa, fully-equipped gym and infinity pool.

Since its debut, W Sydney’s curved glass facade has become an architectural icon rising over Darling Harbour; its modern, unconventional shape is striking both day and night. When you step inside the 588-room property, your world changes; there’s an obvious maritime influence to the guest rooms (a lot of blue), and you’ll recognise the neon lights and opulent textures throughout the public spaces that the W group is known for. You know and feel this is a W Hotel, but its harbour-side location is clearly reflected in the overall design.

W Sydney has multiple room types and suites to choose from based on the number of people staying together, and of course how much you’re willing to pay. The basic rooms (they are all very plush, not exactly basic) come with their own bar cart, a walk-in wardrobe, and a supersized patchwork shark that will greet you on the bed. Then there’s the Penthouse Suite where you can expect a clientele of royalty, billionaires and celebrities. You can explore the various rooms here.

While there are various dining and bar options onsite, you’ll find yourself gearing towards BTWN Restaurant headed up by Chef Chris Dodd, who serves Modern Australian cuisine in a seasonal dinner menu. He tells me that he sources ingredients from within Australia — Sydney city, in particular — with a focus on fresh local produce, and long-term sustainability. His version of a Roast Duck was delicious, and we also recommend the Rib Eye for sharing.

Our visit to W Sydney was made complete with Vivid Sydney in full swing during our stay. Many of the light exhibitions were showing just doorstep to the hotel, with others just a stone’s throw (5-10 minute walk) away. You can’t get a better hotel location than W Sydney’s right in the heart of Darling Harbour, and when you consider this, the room pricing isn’t so bad after all.

W Sydney is located at 31 wheat road, sydney, nsw 2000, australia. Follow them on instagram @WSYDNEYHOTEL and Visit MARRIOTT.COM for bookings.

GOODSTUPH Pays Homage to Asian Queer Legends with Two Exclusive Items for Pink Dot 2024

GOODSTUPH does it again with a collection of exclusive merchandise in support of Pink Dot. This year’s theme, “Legends in Pink” celebrates “gaysian” and queer roots in Asia; with a campaign featuring three pillars: strength, love and fluidity.

The team behind the collection says, “The popular belief that queerness is somehow alien to Asian culture may not be historically accurate. This year, we’re returning to our roots, and spotlighting how queerness also has origins in the South and East, not just the West.”

The two exclusive items from this year’s collection include a t-shirt ($22 in four sizes) and a contemporary take on the Sarong ($59.90), both featuring emblematic characters at the centre of these queer legends. All profits from the sale of these items will be donated to Pink Dot SG, supporting the ongoing push for LGBTQ+ equality and acceptance.

Support and get these items at THE DAMN GOOD SHOP online. There’s also Pink Dot merchandise from previous years that are still available, including a soap and candle from LAST YEAR’S collection.

Balenciaga opens a Souvenir Shop online selling $600 thong sandals

In the context of summertime and the large number of tourists in Paris, Balenciaga has created a Souvenir Shop to showcase products that take inspiration from items sold in souvenir stands on Parisian streets.

Typical Paris tourist merchandise like mugs, t-shirts, porcelain tumblers, magnets, keyrings, and snow globes now bear the Balenciaga stamp as an ode to the city, as well as the Eiffel Tower and a version of a French street sign. With this collection, these pedestrian objects are reinterpreted and presented in new context, and will be available in selected Balenciaga stores and online at balenciaga.com.

These items are for the die-hard Balenciaga and Demna fans who are willing to fork out $600 for market thong sandals or $136 for a set of postcards. We think the small Explorer Pouch is pretty cute, but its price tag at $1,150 isn’t. If you’re still pondering over the purpose and meaning of all of this, it really comes down to IYKYK.

See a selection below and shop at the website.

from now until September 23rd, 2024, a screen window installation will be added to the Balenciaga Saint Honoré storefront to launch a series of collectables available in selected stores.

The NYLON x Klook Essential Guide to Sydney, including Car Rentals, Whale Watching, Seaplane Tours and more

Sydney is an incredible holiday destination, especially if you’ve never been to the Australian city before. Winter (from June to August) is a great time to go, because there’s nothing like escaping the perpetual summer in Singapore, and Sydney’s winters are mild with average temperatures ranging between 8 – 17°C. It’s not biting cold, and you get to wear all the nice jackets you’ve been saving in your closet.

Sydney is most famous for the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach, but to truly appreciate and take in these sights, you need to get on the water (a jet boat or cruise) or go up into the sky (in a helicopter or seaplane). Here are the essential activities you can book directly on Klook so you don’t have to spend your time queuing or figuring things out once you land.

CAR RENTAL IN SYDNEY

If you plan to drive in Sydney, chances are you were going to book directly on Hertz or Avis. Klook is a much better choice. Klook gathers all the different suppliers onto one platform where you can compare vehicles, prices and other important info like insurance and the excess you have to pay should anything happen. There are customer reviews as well so you can avoid the suppliers with dubious deals.

CLICK HERE to explore Klook’s new car rental platform.

LUNA PARK SYDNEY TICKET

Luna Park Sydney is a heritage-listed amusement park located in the harbourside suburb of Milsons Point, which is just across the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. The park opened in 1935 and features 23 attractions including four rollercoasters, and remains one of Sydney’s cultural icons.

The park is only open on select days, and these are highlighted in the calendar when you book on Klook. The Unlimited Rides Day Pass is good value, so you can go on your favourite rides over and over again.

CLICK HERE to book Luna Park Sydney tickets on Klook.

BLUE MOUNTAINS DAY TOURS

Don’t spend all your time in the city, take a day trip out to the Blue Mountains, which is a leisurely 90-minute drive from Sydney’s Central Business District. The Blue Mountains is a breathtaking mountain range that’s known for their distinctive blue haze (hence the name) caused by the scattering of sunlight through eucalyptus tree particles in the air.

When booking this day tour on Klook, you can filter your activity preferences (eg. guided bush walk or river cruise) and put together a package that interests you.

CLICK HERE to explore the various day tour packages to the Blue Mountains.

WHALE WATCHING SYDNEY HARBOUR CRUISE

Get on a cruise and spot whales? It’s almost a guarantee that you’ll see some. If no whales are successfully watched, you receive a free return cruise. If you hope to take photos like the ones you see on Klook, bring a long-focus lens (or you could zoom in on your smartphone).

CLICK HERE to book a 2-hour whale watching adventure on a Sydney Harbour cruise.

SYDNEY SEAPLANES HIGHLIGHTS FLIGHT

Do you love to fly? See the world from up above? Better yet, have you taken a seaplane before? This flight experience will be thrilling. It’s open for all ages and you’ll get an aerial view of Sydney’s iconic landmarks.

ISSEY MIYAKE and New Balance collaborate for a footwear project inspired by sensuous physicality and barefoot mobility

ISSEY MIYAKE and New Balance unveil their first footwear project together — the MT100 shoe designed by ISSEY MIYAKE’s designer Satoshi Kondo, and inspired by the concept of sensuous physicality and barefoot mobility.

This minimalist trail running shoe provides the sensation of running barefoot while offering protection and traction for off-road running, and is part of New Balance’s Minimus series, which emphasises minimal cushioning and a close-to-ground experience. This model was first introduced in 2011 and developed in response to a growing interest in the experience and technology of feeling like you’re running barefoot.

ISSEY MIYAKE worked on its materials, colour palette, and details, giving the classic model a new look. It features a cobranded logo on the insole and a special shoe case.

The shoe’s upper combines lightweight, breathable mesh with premium leather, and is fitted with thin cord-like shoelaces that are both minimalistic and functional. While the midsole has minimal cushioning, it is firmed up to provide a platform suitable for off-road running. As for the outsole, it is designed with a focus on grip and durability, having protruding shapes to enhance traction on various terrains in both urban and natural environments.

The ISSEY MIYAKE x New Balance MT10O launches June 14, 2024, priced at $340. available at ISSEY MIYAKE voco Orchard and CLUB21.COM in White, Black, and Blue Green.

Review: The Dyson Supersonic Nural hair dryer, using smart sensor technology — how does it work and what makes it different

We’re all familiar with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer that is powerful and fast, and comes with a whole plethora of attachments to dry and style various types of hair. Now Dyson has added intelligence to their bestselling hair dryer, so it can actually adapt to the user’s habits and style of drying hair. It’s called the Dyson Supersonic Nural hair dryer, because of the Nural sensors that it’s fitted with, and that can intelligently determine the power and heat that your hair needs while in use.

Above: unboxing the dyson supersonic nural hair dryer.

There are three Nural sensors in the device whose purpose is to enhance hair’s natural shine and to protect the scalp while drying. Under a special Scalp Protect Mode, a consistent temperature is maintained so it never gets too hot and your scalp stays comfortable.

Above: the electronics of the hair dryer are seen through the transparent casing, and they light up in various colours while in use (blue for cool, yellow for low heat, orange for medium, and red for high).

The magnetic attachments are now also made with intelligence; the hair dryer will recognise which one is used and your styling settings for it.

Above: the magnetic attachments that came with the Dyson supersonic nural hair dryer.

Above: The flyaway smoother attachment is one of our favourites to use. it utilises the coanda effect to hide flyaways and create a smooth, shiny finish.

Using the hair dryer is intuitive; it works exactly like the original Dyson Supersonic (and any other hair dryer), but you’ll notice the colours and heat changing on its own as you use the device. The machine is adapting to the attachment used and proximity of the hair, so you can really just carry on blow-drying your hair without bothering to stop and change settings along the way.

Above: you can set the power manually as well.

We love that when we pause and put the machine down, the hair dryer detects this and deactivates the heater and decreases airflow. This is a similar function that is in the Dyson Airstrait (which is really one of the best hair tools we’ve ever used and we’re still obsessed with).

Like all Dyson appliances, the Supersonic Nural is very sleek; bordering between industrial design and a modern, futuristic look. We have the Vinca blue/Topaz Orange device with a gorgeous matte finish. There’s also a Ceramic Patina/Topaz Orange version that’s equally striking.

Above: the colour combination shown here is Vinca blue / Topaz orange. the finish on the machine is matte, and the mix of blue and orange is beautifully striking.

On Dyson’s website, we can see that the Vinca blue option comes with a beautiful and functional presentation case. It’s a Dyson direct exclusive, which means if you buy direct from Dyson Demo stores or dyson.com.sg, and choose this colour, you’ll receive the case (which you’ll definitely want). Other retailers where you’ll find Dyson will only carry the Ceramic Patina shade, and without a case.

The Dyson Supersonic Nural hair dryer is priced at $699 and available at DYSON.COM.SG.

How To Get Plumped-Up Lips With These New-Gen Lip Plumpers, Juicy Tints, & Glosses

If TikTok and Instagram are anything to go by, matte lips have completely disappeared off our feeds, replaced by a shiny new phenomenon: glossy lips. From the cult of Hailey Bieber who’ll hail the holy grail of glazed lips, to the k-beauty girlies with their glass skin and glassy pouts alike, plumped-up puckers seem to be the way to go these days. Granted, we did talk about the 90s resurgence of lip gloss all the way back in 2019, and how formulas then already promised deep hydration without icky stickiness — though we have to say, the class of 2024 seems to be doing all this and better.

Here’s the update. First off, new-generation formulas seem to have borrowed a thing or two from aesthetic procedures, giving rise to a new category of lip-plumping formulas that promise fuller pouts without the need for lip fillers; these often feel minty when on the lips, and may contain ingredients such as peppermint oil, capsaicin, proprietary technology, or even simply hyaluronic acid to create a smooth, filled-in appearance.

At the same time, it seems we’re no longer satisfied with last decade’s obsession with nude lip colours, preferring to, instead, play up the lips with tinted formulas. These go from weightless lip tints, no doubt a product of the k-beauty world, that give us a beautiful sheer wash of colour, to ultra-nourishing lip oils, new and improved lip glosses, and buttery lip balms that promise all glory and all shine. Ahead, we’re put together some of our favourite lipsticks, tints and balms — all in a bid to juice up ’em lips.
