OWNDAYS x HUAWEI Eyewear returns with Generation 2 smart audio glasses

Earlier this year, OWNDAYS and HUAWEI collaborated on a collection of smart audio glasses that had a snap-on sunglass lens. You can read about it here:

OWNDAYS x HUAWEI Eyewear Smart Audio Glasses lets you see and listen with an in-built speaker system

This month, they launch their Generation 2 Smart Audio Glasses, with significant enhancements that include better sound quality, being lighter in weight, and having a larger battery capacity (a full charge provides up to 11 hours of audio playback or 9 hours of voice call; an increase of 5 hours and 4.5 hours respectively from the 1st generation).

Above: Video courtesy owndays.

Above: the generation 2 smart audio glasses are 20% slimmer at the temples than the 1st generation, with the temple tips being 28% slimmer. The temples are made of resin, a lightweight material that is gentle on the skin, flexible and resistant to deformation.

With these new frames, there’s now a co-directional dual diaphragm unit that utilises a dual-coil four-magnet design; this boosts media volume by 30% and loudspeaker amplitude by 40% compared to the previous model. The audio sounds clearer and more defined, with a stronger bass and wider frequency.

Above: the acoustic units on the arms, and plugged in to the included charger.

There’s also less sound leakage as the acoustic units are directed straight to the ears; plus the smart audio glasses can sense quieter surroundings like an elevator or meeting room, and lower volume accordingly.

The new lineup consists of four popular eyewear designs in two colour variations each (Black and Clear Grey or Clear Brown).

You can also add on the separate clip-on SNAP LENS ($20) that converts the spectacles to sunglasses. These are polarised lenses that reduce glare so it’s a worthwhile top-up if you’re getting these glasses.

Above: The clip-on snap lens at an additional $20.

Above: The snap lens is extremely thin and adds very little width to the frames.

Above: The OWNDAYS x HUAWEI smart audio glasses.
The OWNDAYS x HUAWEI smart audio glasses are priced at $398 and available at owndays stores from 22 december 2023.

Last Minute Gifts for the Disney and Star Wars fan — there’s shopDisney Singapore online

Everyone has a friend who’s a Disney or Star Wars fan. Well, you don’t need to travel to Disneyland to get exclusive Disney merchandise — just check out shopDisney Singapore online, which has a delivery time of just 1-2 business days. So if you’re looking for last minute gifts (even if it’s for yourself), order now and you should get it before Christmas. Here are NYLON’s picks of what we’d like under our tree this year. And you can just click on the image to go straight to the shopping page.

STAR WARS

It’s fine to be an adult and still love toys. Get both these remote control droids and pit them against each other! It’s also never too early to get a Halloween costume for your kid; this Darth Vader one has eight sound effects with sizes from 3 to 10 years old.

MUGS

You may think that mugs are such a cliché gift — well, not these! Have a laugh with the Beaker design, or check out the Wish and Dumbo mugs with matching lids.

FOR KIDS

You know what kids would like? Their dreams to come true. Check out this Snow White costume, Tinker Bell wings that light up, and the classic Rex talking action figure (which is always sold out but now back in stock).

WISH FOR THIS

Wish upon a star and you never know, maybe your wish will come true. Here are three wishes you won’t regret getting — a cuddle plush that’s super big and squishy (it’ll replace all the pillows on your bed), a light-up plush that’ll keep the small one who’s afraid of the dark company, and of course, the night light that you can’t get wrong (everyone loves a night light, especially one as cute as this).

Have yourself a merry christmas.

The LEGO Ideas Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera is dropping 1st Jan 2024

LEGO once again brings our dreams to life with a brick version of the Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera. It resembles the real thing, even down to its moving parts; but do note that this is really just a toy. As much as you hope it’ll take actual photos, it’s just meant to be built, and then sit on your shelf to look pretty.

There are 516 pieces to build this replica, and the box labels it as ages 18+, but LEGO bricks isn’t about age and I’m pretty sure my 12-year-old can put this together on her own.

The base opens just like the real thing, and there are LEGO “photos” to play pretend with. You and the whole family will get a kick out of this; until it lands up on your shelf for the rest of its life, of course.

Cool features of the build include a viewfinder, an exposure compensation dial on the front of the camera, a red shutter button that ejects the Polaroid film, and a separate storage box for the three pieces of “film” that this comes with. Fun fact: one of the photos has a picture of Polaroid inventor, Edwin H. Land.

The LEGO Ideas Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera will be priced at $129.90, and available from 1st January 2024. Visit Lego’s OFFICIAL WEBSITE for full details.

What Bag are you wishing for this Christmas? Here’s NYLON’s roundup of Dream Bags for 2023!

A bag makes the perfect Christmas present — unless you get it wrong. So instead of letting someone else second-guess the kind of bag you want, just tell them what it is; or better yet, buy it yourself. Here’s our roundup of dream bags for the season that will last way beyond this month.

GOLD-TONE

December is the month that you can get away with a shiny golden bag, and it’ll be the most elegant thing in the room. And if you’re going to invest in gold, get it in a classic silhouette that’ll last forever, like a Chanel flap bag, Dior Lady or Louis Vuitton Petite Malle.

[URISP id=215366]

MODERN CLASSIC

When a brand references its archives and refreshes a heritage design, that’s your new modern classic. These won’t go out of style, and will stay trendy for years to come. Choose one in a fun colour like orange or Scarlet red to avoid looking stuffy and outdated.

[URISP id=215408]

STRUCTURED BOX

You love structure in your life, but tend to veer from the norm. You have an eye for solid builds and good quality, yet there’s something quite fun about you too. You probably fancy yourself a top handle bag that’s shaped like a box. Gucci’s beauty case has a classic, retro design, while Saint Laurent’s Takeaway Box will be a conversation starter. But if you want something to keep for life (and pass down to your children), check out Rimowa’s One Bottle Case. Think out of the box and use this for other purposes — like storing your makeup, jewellery or even medicine.

[URISP id=215399]

NOVELTY

You can carry your heart in your hand, or perhaps a star or diamond. These novelties won’t wear off anytime soon.

[URISP id=215414]

Have yourself a Merry Christmas.

We Pick Out The 8 Best Festive Beauty Gifts You Can Find At Raffles City Singapore

With the mall decked out in festive displays, especially with a stunning Christmas tree that sits above a whimsical gingerbread-inspired carousel, Raffles City Singapore this time of the year feels very much like walking into a winter wonderland — one with a galore of treats and gifts for those on your “nice” list.

The beauty haven is home to a whole lane of luxury beauty boutiques that’ll have you both inspired and spoilt for choice, but don’t worry about the latter though, as we’ve rounded up a couple of our favourite beauty brands, and selected a gift from each, to help along with your decision-making. Ahead, the most mesmerising scents, talked-about skincare sets, dazzling makeup, and limited editions dressed in holiday cheer.

1. HARNN

Thai beauty and wellness brand HARNN certainly knows the way to someone’s heart — as well as their mind, body and soul. Known for their range of organic body care and fragrance products infused with the most captivating scents, their soap bars, shower gels, and lightweight body oils, a recent store visit had us impressed with their head-to-toe approach to beauty and premium packaging that represents the high-quality ingredients used throughout their ranges.

As for this year’s holiday sets, the theme is based around “The Art of Scent & Soul”, with five gift sets featuring packaging designed by distinguished artist and writer, Ploy Chariyaves. You’ll find golden animals, which also symbolise the upcoming Year of the Dragon, whether it’s the auspicious dragonfly that signals new beginnings, or the elegant crane to manifest peace, love, marriage, and lasting well-being; these are done in vibrant yet harmonious colours meant to deliver positivity and joy.

our pick — good flow set (body care) + harnn glow vibe set (body care)

Pick a colour scheme you know your friend will adore, or perhaps go for their favourite scent — either way, you can’t go wrong with these HARNN body care sets, each featuring a Body Wash and Body Lotion.

Good Flow, in shades of purple and indigo, is all about positive vibes, and features body care essentials infused with the cosy Juniper Berry & Cedarwood scent, which reminds us of Christmas gatherings thanks to its notes of a pine forest, ripe berries, and mulled wine.

Glow Vibe, on the other hand, features balanced shades of green and yellow, and sees a solar White Tea & Camellia scent with fresh and pleasing floral notes.

HAARN, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-13A.

2. DIPTYQUE

Know anyone who doesn’t love Diptyque? They’d be a rare one. It seems like everyone won’t be able to resist the allure of the French fragrance house, like moths to a flame perhaps, which is incidentally what their latest holiday collection is inspired by. This year celebrates the magic of the flame — its charming, luminous light — from the way it’s able to transmit scent, to how it can fill us with emotion as it dances atop a candle.

The poetic sentiment is conveyed via extravagant swirls across scented and decorative objects meant to spark joy, including special limited editions of the classic candle, an exquisite advent calendar, and new dinner candles made of moulded, scented wax.

our pick — Set of 3 Small Holiday Candles, $213

We always look forward to Diptyque’s limited edition holiday candles, mostly because they always nail the warmth and cosiness of the seasion. In vessels decorated with coloured, black, and golden flames, we get the fresh and delicate Sapin inspired by pine trees; Délice, which springs forth delight with festive notes of dried fruit and vanilla accord; and Coton, which has notes of tonka bean to evoke the softness of a gentle embrace .

Diptyque, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-05.

3. KIEHL’S

More festive treats await, this time for the skincare-obsessed, who’ll definitely find a favourite at Kiehl’s This year, they’ve partnered with husband-wife illustrators Icinori for a whimsical animated universe that conveys the wonder of their skincare products, from the popular Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner to the Ultra Facial Cream and Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque, which make keeping to a beauty regime way more enjoyable.

While you’re shopping at the mall, just know that Raffles City is also home to Kiehl’s first-ever ‘Store of Tomorrow’ concept in Singapore, which debuts elevated in-store experiences for all fans of the brand. Go try a personalised skin analysis service using Kiehl’s Derma Reader Pro Device, or book an appointment for one of their facial services at the private facial cabin tucked away within the store.

our pick —Calendula cheers set, $122

Needless to say, we love the Calendula Herbal-Extract Alcohol Free Toner for how it’s infused with real Calendula petals, and works wonders to soothe and rejuvenate the skin. This star product is paired with a full-sized Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash that’s just as gentle on the skin, while the set includes the skin-fortifying Vital Skin-Strengthening Super Serum, Singapore’s bestselling Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, and the Calendula Serum Infused Water Cream, for a hydrating finale to one’s routine.

Kiehl’s, at Raffles City Singapore, #B1-39/40.

4. GIVENCHY BEAUTY

Next on the list, the sophisticated makeup and fragrance offerings from Givenchy Beauty, who’ve opted for plenty of sparkle to celebrate the season. Thom Walker, Givenchy’s Makeup Creative Director, puts a glamorous yet edgy spin to the house’s most iconic products, drawing inspiration from the disco-queen vibes of parties in the 70s, the very ones Hubert de Givenchy would have attended. Lipsticks, highlighter, and eyeshadow are reinvented with light-reflecting silver sequin packaging, alongside 4G logos that elevate them to couture object-status.

our pick — le rouge interdit intense silk, $62

For the Holiday 2023 collection, three lipsticks — the Le Rouge Interdit Intense Silk, Le Rouge Sheer Velvet and Le Rouge Deep Velvet — arrive in cases of silver sequins that’ll definitely catch the light when you go in for touch-ups at your next festive party. Featured here, we see the newly-created shade Nude Thrill No. 554 on the brand’s signature >Le Rouge Interdit Intense Silk, a vibrant nude colour infused with a touch of orange, and with the 4G logo stamped onto the bullet like a glamorous high-fashion monogram.

Givenchy Beauty, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-40B.

5. CREED

With a gorgeous flagship boutique at Raffles City, the only standalone store in Singapore, stepping into the House of Creed feels like a luxury, as we get to experience the full suite of Creed Fragrances and services, including the Royal Exclusives collection available only at the store. Interestingly enough, the storied brand started all the way back in 1760, founded by James Henry Creed, when a then up-and-coming London tailoring company was tasked to send a pair of scented leather gloves to King George III — and if it’s good enough for royalty, a Christmas gift from here seem fit for the king or queen of your life.

our pick — carmina, $485 (75ml)

A vintage-style violet bottle houses the House of Creed’s latest scent, Carmina, that’s equal parts bold and sultry as it pays tribute to the grand, voluminous dresses found in Henry Creed’s fashion sketchbooks, heirlooms that have been passed down the Creed family for generations.

The women found in those drawings are dressed in both luxury and the boldness of a heroine, in case you know anyone with similar vibes, and starts off with notes of black cherry and pink pepper that add modernity to violet and a muted rose, followed by the warmth of saffron, delicate musks, and a captivating cashmere wood.

CREED, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-39C.

6. GUCCI BEAUTY

The vintage graphics of Gucci Beauty continues in a limited edition holiday collection that sees the Rouge à Lèvres Mat and Cushion de Beauté dressed up in vibrant teal and red, with a geometric pattern of hidden Gs that are certainly eye-catching on their own, even without the usual sparkling accents we’d expect from holiday launches.

The creamy-matte lipstick is available in three curated shades picked out from their extensive line: 208 They Met In Argentina, a warm rosewood; 505 Janet Rust, a rusted red; and 509 Janie Scarlet, a vivid cranberry. Clearly, these are meant for the person who takes pride in their vanity table, or someone who can’t resist a little showing off should they bring their Cushion de Beauté out for touch-ups.

our pick — gucci flora collection, $270 (1ooml)

As part of the #GucciBeautyWishes collection, the holiday visuals imagines an enchanting garden at night, of luminous flowers in purple, pink and blue lit by the glow of comets. The Gucci Flora collection, is rather apt then if you’re shopping for the person who appreciates a similar sense of wonder, while each of these Eau de Parfums spotlight a specific flower for inspiration, house in lacquered bottles finished with the house’s emblematic Flora pattern.

Gorgeous Gardenia is joyful and delightfully floral, as it blends White Gardenia with solar Jasmine Grandiflorum Absolute, with a touch of Brown Sugar for a subtle sweetness; while Gorgeous Jasmine, in teal, features a radiant bouquet of Jasmine Grandiflorum, now blended with sensual base notes and uplifting citrus. Gorgeous Magnolia, the latest in the line, highlights the luminous and bold Magnolia Essence, amidst juicy dewberries and fresh patchouli.

Gucci Beauty, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-40A.

7. DIOR BEAUTY

For the “Emily” who dreams of living in Paris, Dior Beauty’s holiday collection is an enchanting one that transports us into the royal Tuileries gardens, the exact fairytale moment of fresh snow falling from the night sky.

With such mesmerising inspiration, Dior’s house icons no doubt look as resplendent in white and gold, winter colours that reflect the snow on the gilded gates of the Tuileries. The baroque imagery of the historical gardens feature on cushion and lipstick cases, gleaming with Christian Dior’s name on their refillable cases, while paper bags and gift boxes are given the same grand treatment as well.

our pick — ÉCRIN COUTURE ICONIC MAKEUP PALETTE, $220

If you know someone who adores both Dior and makeup, this is probably a dream to behold. An entire makeup suite they can hold in their hand, done exquisitely thanks to an exterior case adorned with a golden design inspired by the wrought iron works of the Tuileries Garden. Inside, they’ll get to discover an elegant harmony of seasonal shades, versatile enough for day and night looks, comprising of eyeshadows, blushes, a highlighting powder, and creamy lip shades.

Dior Beauty, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-02B.

8. ACQUA DI PARMA

The little details count for Acqua di Parma, as their holiday season does away with minimalism, and instead embraces the handcrafted beauty of Italian craftsmanship. Let’s just say this one’s for the maximalists — done right though, with the work of artisans who blend contemporary sensibilities and traditional techniques, seen via elaborate adornment of the fragrance brand’s coffret boxes and the Advent Calendar, produced entirely by hand, which bear lucky symbols from around the world.

There are also limited-edition candles and diffusers in scents such as Bosco, a green one of the crisp mountain air, as well as fir trees and frosted pine needles; Neve Fresca, of a winter morning at home complete with notes of sparkling citrus, cloudy musk and silky sandalwood; as well as Portafortuna, a lucky charm that captures the magical aura of wishes and dreams with deep, woody, and leather notes, even with subtle hints of cinnamon weaved in.

our pick — colonia gift set, $267

Already wrapped in joyous yellow, this Acqua di Parma gift set stars the timeless Colonia fragrance, an epitome of Italian elegance with its opening of bright, citrusy notes, that then reveal an aromatic heart of lavender, rose, and rosemary, followed by a warm and precious woody base. The Colonia Gift Set includes a full-sized bottle of the Colonia Eau de Cologne, alongside a refreshing Bath and Shower Gel, and matching Deodorant Spray.

Acqua di Parma, at Raffles City Singapore, #01-07.

On top of these splendid gifts, Raffles City Singapore is offering a whole sleigh of festive shopping promotions when you shop at the mall, available till 31 December 2023. Become blemish-free by Christmas. Here are our secrets to get rid of Acne and unwanted breakouts, fast!

No one likes their skin to breakout, but it’s life. It just happens, and usually due to unhygienic skin (you’re not cleaning your skin the way it needs to be), pollution in the air, hormones or stress. But there are ways to tackle the problem of blemishes. These are tried-and-tested products that work for us and believe it or not, everyone else we recommend them to.

MARIO BADESCU DRYING PATCH

These little circular stickers are the best we’ve found for tackling spots. Don’t get them confused with your usual hydrocolloid pimple stickers (eg. the kind you find at Watsons and Guardian), these aren’t hydrocolloid at all; they are made with Salicylic Acid, which will dissolve the acne-causing blockages (like dead skin cells, oil and other dirt). Stick them on emerging pimples and watch them disappear overnight.

Also, these are by far the thinnest and most transparent face stickers we’ve ever come across, so you can effectively wear them during the day, and no one will notice (unless they come really close to you and stare at your face).

One box contains 60 patches, and while that sounds like a lot, we go through them pretty quickly — because they really work. We’ve probably bought around seven of these boxes in the past year! Thankfully, they are affordable.

Mario Badescu Drying Patch, $33 for a box of 60, available at Sephora.

WELLY BANDAGES — FACE SAVERS HYDROCOLLOID ADHESIVE

If you have an open wound like a burst pimple, you’ll want to cover that up with a hydrocolloid bandage. These provide a sterile environment for the wound to heal, while absorbing (ie. sucking out) the pus. Don’t look anywhere else but Welly Bandages; their Face Savers are extremely effective! They are thinner than most other brands, very comfortable to wear, and stick on well. Really the best hydrocolloid adhesives we’ve ever tried.

Welly Bandages — Face Savers hydrocolloid adhesive, $16.65 for a tin of 36. Refills are $22.94 for a box of 60. Buy online at AMAZON.SG.

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE BREAKOUT SALICYLIC ACID CONCENTRATED DERMA SERUM

This unassuming bottle is your key to maintaining a blemish-free complexion. It has a good concentration of salicylic acid, lactic acid and postbiotic ferment, all good ingredients that gently exfoliate and remove acne-causing dead skin debris. If you’re prone to breakouts, add this to your daily skincare regime.

IT COSMETICS BYE BYE BREAKOUT SALICYLIC ACID CONCENTRATED DERMA SERUM, $50 for 30ml, available from SEPHORA.

KIEHL’S ULTRA FACIAL CREAM

If you can’t explain your breakout, it could be the daily moisturiser you’re using. A simple change to something gentle yet effective will make a world of difference to your skin. We’ve passed on this Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream to a friend, who told us that he completely stopped producing more pimples once he switched to this moisturiser. It may not work like a miracle for everyone, but it’s certainly worth a try.

KIEHL’S ULTRA FACIAL CREAM, $63 for 50ml, from KIEHLS.COM.SG.

PAULA’S CHOICE 2% BHA LIQUID EXFOLIANT

This skincare is similar to the one above by IT Cosmetics, but it’s less than half the price (it’s $21 for 30ml). It’s a liquid that also contains salicylic acid, but with a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) that sheds built-up layers of skin. BHA also reduces oil production.

If you have dry or sensitive skin, the serum from IT Cosmetics will work better for you because it contains lactic acid instead of a BHA. So it’s important to figure out your skin type and concern, then choose the right exfoliant for your skin.

PAULA’S CHOICE 2% BHA LIQUID EXFOLIANT, $52 for 118ml, from PAULASCHOICE.SG.

PIMPLE JAB

If you have a large or ingrown pimple, the quickest way to get rid of it is by visiting a dermatologist and getting a pimple jab. It sounds painful — and it is (like an ant bite) — but if you have an important event to attend, it’s so worth it.

Cortisone is injected directly into the offending pimple, and almost immediately, the area will become less inflamed. It’ll take between 4 to 48 hours for the blemish to go away on its own. But more importantly, get this procedure done at a reputable clinic. If too much cortisone is injected, you might end up with a depressed scar at that spot.

We recommend TLC Lifestyle Practice at Pacific Plaza #11-04/05 and Mizu Clinic at ION Orchard level 5.

Review: The Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI vacuum cleaner — a smarter holiday purchase

A year ago, we reviewed the Samsung Bespoke Jet™ — a high quality vacuum with an “All-in-one Clean Station™”. It’s a powerful vacuum with a beautiful finish, and the station allows the user to empty the bin automatically. This year, Samsung refreshes this winning concept with an even smarter and more powerful device called the Bespoke Jet™ AI.

Above: The Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI comes in SATIN BLACK ($1,499) and SATIN GREIGE ($1,399) models. they are seen here docked in their all-in-one clean stations™.

The Bespoke Jet™ AI has a suction power of up to 280W, which is quite a step up from its predecessor at 210W. But of course, even at 210W, we got a lot of cleaning done, so you can imagine how much more efficient this new model is. Apart from being more powerful, there’s a new AI Cleaning mode that works with the Slim LED Brush+ head. This mode senses the brush load — which would be different across different floor types — and adjusts suction power accordingly. Ultimately, it delivers the same performance as Mid mode, but it runs on 21% less battery power.

Above: An example of the AI cleaning mode, where the suction power is adjusted according to the floor type and the brush load.

Cleaning the house with the Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI is quick and effortless. The vacuum works efficiently to pick up dirt, and there’s a multi-cyclonic air filtration that traps fine dust as well, which ultimately helps to reduce allergies. Manoeuvring the vacuum brush head is really smooth, and the brush heads can be changed easily. In the box, there’s a useful crevice tool (great for window sills and corners behind furniture), a Spray Spinning Sweeper (this works almost like a mop!), and a Pet Tool+ that’s great at picking up pet fur and dander on sofas and mattresses.

Above: The various accessories that come with the premium SATIN BLACK model.

What we really love about all the Bespoke Jet™ vacuums is the All-in-one Clean Station™; this is the docking station that lets you rest and charge your vacuum, while also emptying its bin into a contained dust bag. There’s no spillage or dusty mess to deal with; just press a button on the station and the dust bin on the vacuum opens and the dirt gets sucked out. In this new model, the cover of the dust bin gets automatically shut as well.

There’s no need to change the Dust Bag often; it can hold up to months of dirt in an antibacterial environment. When in doubt, you can just snap open the station to check how full the bag is.

Above: The Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI next to its all-in-one clean station™.

While the All-in-one Clean Station™ plays home to the vacuum, there’s an accessory cradle to neatly keep all the various tools that come in the box. We love that everything has a place, and the design and function is cleverly thought out.

The Samsung Bespoke Jet™ AI is priced from $1,399 and available for order on samsung.com.

PRISM+ U75 Mini-LED QLED TV, featuring 50x smaller nanocrystals for the brightest screen ever

A television is not something we change often, but it’s pretty obvious when it’s time for the old set to go. Something messes up; like the audio is too soft or the screen has mysterious lines; or perhaps the internet connection becomes unstable. If the frustration has finally gotten to you and you’re shopping for a new TV for yourself (or it’s time to replace the one at your parent’s place), consider one of the new launches from PRISM+; the local brand recently announced a refresh of their premium TV line-up, and it includes the all-new U-Series Mini-LED QLED models that are the future of home entertainment.

Above: the new u-series features a 4k mini-led display capable of reaching 1400 nits of peak brightness.

The U-Series Google TV moves away from the traditional display and instead makes use of smaller chips so more LEDs can be installed on the display panel. It also utilises full-array local dimming technology to reduce blooming, so the TV screen can achieve the deepest blacks and the whitest whites — without the price of a premium OLED display.

There are two available sizes for the new U-Series: U65 (65” diagonally) and U75 (75” diagonally), both featuring the Mini-LED technology, as well as Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HLG, MEMC (motion smoothing), Filmmaker Mode, and Dolby Atmos.

Above: Gamers will love the new screen with a 120Hz display panel for smoother motion.

As a Google TV, you can access the Google Play Store to download any apps that aren’t already pre-installed. There’s Disney+, Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Spotify, iQIYI, HBO GO and Viu, among over 5,000 other apps. We really like that the remote has a dedicated Netflix button.

You can order the TVs online at prismplus.sg. It comes with 3 years onsite warranty and you can choose to have the PRISM+ team mount it on the wall for you if needed.

This is a sleek-looking device that will fit in discreetly to your home decor, and the screen will give you the clarity and brightness of more premium OLED TVs, but at a more accessible price point.

The PRISM+ U-Series Mini-LED QLED 4K Google TV will be available in two display sizes, the Prism+ U65 mini-LED qled and the prism+ U75 mini-LED qled. Both models are priced at $1,699 and $2,299 respectively.

Taking the new Nikon Z f out to the streets of Tokyo and Nagoya

My first “real” camera was a Nikon Df. It had full manual controls (apart from the autofocus), and it was packaged in a super cool retro design. The Df still remains a popular camera and those who own one refuse to let it go (which also means the camera keeps its value and market price). Now 10 years later, Nikon launches another highly desirable model with an equally cool throwback design, the Nikon Z f.

Above: The Nikon Z f in black with nikkor z 40mm f/2 (se) lens.

The Nikon Z f is a full-frame mirrorless camera that’s comes in a recognisable, iconic design, is fairly light and compact, and has all the technological bells and whistles to make this a modern marvel of a camera.

DESIGN

If the camera design looks familiar, that’s because it’s modelled after the original Nikon FM2 SLR from 1982. The viewfinder shape, the retro Nikon logo, and textured wrap all pay homage to the FM2’s heritage design; and while it’s slightly bulkier than the FM2, it’s far more compact than the Nikon Df.

Above: (from left to right) The Nikon FM2, Nikon Z f and Nikon DF.

With the Nikon Z f, the brand really got quite a few things right: it has a magnesium-alloy body (a material that is corrosion-resistant and lightweight), globally, it’s available in six premium exterior colour options (in Singapore, the camera comes in black as default), and it has the same EXPEED 7 image-processing engine as the flagship Nikon Z 9.

At the time of writing this, the Z f is only available for pre-order in Singapore, and we heard that the waitlist is until May 2024! And it’s understandable why this camera is becoming Nikon’s next blockbuster; it doesn’t just look good, it’s really easy to use and takes excellent pictures.

EASY TO USE

I love that the dials for ISO, exposure compensation and shutter speed are placed on the top plate of the camera — all easily adjustable, and these are made of brass that feels solid and of high quality.

Above: The dials on the top of the camera.

The back of the camera features a touchscreen that can be flipped out and turned around when you need to store and protect it. And like all touchscreens, it’s intuitive; you can change settings and set your focus with a simple touch where you want it.

THE LENS

You can order the Nikon Z f on its own ($3,299 for just the body), or in a bundle kit with the NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 (SE) lens ($3,699) or NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens ($4,199). I brought the 40mm lens along with me to Japan; it’s small and light, and is a good focal length for pretty much any type of photography (street, architecture, landscapes and even portraits).

PHOTO QUALITY

While there are tons of presets (like Deep Tone Monochrome and Rich Tone Portrait) to use, I chose to shoot the following photos in the camera’s default mode, to capture the sights of Japan in all its original glory.

We’re back at the Shangri-La Tokyo with its luxurious Rooms and Suites, and unbeatable location next to Tokyo Station

Tokyo is one of my favourite cities in the world, and every time I head there, I plan a stay at the Shangri-La Tokyo. The hotel has the comfort and familiarity of home (every Singaporean knows the iconic Shangri-La Singapore at Orange Grove Road and its famous buffet at The Line); and what’s unique to Shangri-La Tokyo is its ideal location in Marunouchi, situated right next to Tokyo Station, which is just a 1 minute walk away.

THE PERFECT LOCATION

When you step out of Shangri-La Tokyo’s lobby, you’ll see the entrance to Tokyo Station — which is the one place that connects to everywhere in Tokyo and the rest of Japan! You can easily get to and from the international airports, Tokyo Disneyland, and Tokyo Station also  serves major Shinkansen lines that’ll bring you to other cities in Japan like Osaka and Nagoya.

Above: the entrance to tokyo station is right outside the hotel.

Within Tokyo Station itself, there are countless dining options, and everything else that you could possibly need, like coffee, a pharmacy, bookstores, convenience stores, and gifts to bring home (eg. yummy Tokyo Banana biscuits!). Best of all,  you can find the fascinating “Tokyo Character Street” at the basement. This is the stretch of stores that feature popular characters like Sumikko Gurashi, Hello Kitty, Studio Ghibli, Pokemon, Rilakkuma, Gudetama, and so much more. You’ll spend a whole day here.

LIVING IN THE LAP OF LUXURY

There are 200 rooms at the Shangri-La Tokyo, starting from a Deluxe Room with a spacious 538sqft, to a Presidential Suite that’s an entire apartment in the sky.

This is the Executive Suite that’s perfect for a family of four. There’s a separate living room with a sofa that can be transformed into an extra bed, so parents can really have their own downtime at the end of a long day.

JOIN THE CLUB

One of my favourite things about Shangri-La Tokyo is the hotel’s Horizon Club. This is a special lounge located on the 37th floor and offers some of the best panoramic views of the city. Within the club, there are complimentary cocktails and bites, and you can head there anytime during your stay (opening hours from 730am to 8pm).

FOOD FIT FOR A KING

Like any great hotel, Shangri-La Tokyo has a suite of first-class restaurants, and the one you’ll want to book is Nadaman, which serves authentic Japanese cuisine such as Teppanyaki and Sushi.

You can opt for the Omakase menu and let the chef put together the freshest ingredients for your meal. You can make a reservation by emailing them at restaurantrsv.slty@shangri-la.com.
