All The Luxury Beauty Boutiques That Make Raffles City Singapore A Beauty Haven

By now, you should be familiar with Raffles City Singapore‘s revamp and how the premier fashion, beauty and lifestyle mall easily delivers across these diverse categories with class. We can go on about the new, cool fashion brands and lifestyle stores that have set up shop at the mall, but here’s the reason why we’re especially obsessed: the beauty boutiques.

They’ve decked the beauty halls alright, with luxury brands such as Givenchy Beauty and Creed debuting their first flagship boutiques in Singapore, while the mall is also home to Sephora’s first ‘Store of the Future’ concept in Asia. In fact, Raffles City Singapore boasts one of the largest collective of beauty flagship boutiques in Singapore under one roof, making shopping that much more convenient.

Beyond just the brand names — CHANEL, Dior, YSL Beauty, Gucci Beauty, Aesop, and several dedicated fragrance boutiques including Maison Francis Kurkdjian — the beauty of these spaces is that we get to swatch the hottest makeup products, slather on luxurious skincare, or sniff out the most enchanting scents to our heart’s desire; these elevated boutiques often introduce experiential concepts and exclusive products as well, such as facial cabins or lavish fragrance bars.

The diversity of brands include well-known international ones to local ones, and even new-to-market brands such as Thailand-based brand HARNN who recently debut a new store in the mall. Read on to find out what’s new at the mall, including their plans for this year’s festive light-up.

The Raffles City Singapore x Jo Malone London Christmas Display

The festive season is always a highly-anticipated affair, and you bet Raffles City is about to dazzle the Civic District with their holiday display, something we look forward to every year. This year, they’re set to ring in the Christmas celebrations with a first-of-its-kind Raffles City Singapore x Jo Malone London Christmas tree centrepiece, a 15-metre immersive installation that will bring out the joy and wonder of the season.

This magical Gingerbread wonderland will debut alongside festive offerings presented in an enchanting forest of candy stripes and cologne-decked trees, in an atmosphere filled with “ginger, spice, and all gifts nice” — whether that’s a literal expression will be seen when the installation is unveiled to the public in mid-November.

To accompany the festive collaboration, Jo Malone London will also take the opportunity to introduce their limited-edition holiday collection, filled with enchanting scents and gift sets, including the seasonal Ginger Biscuit creation. The iconic Wild Bluebell fragrance and more also come adorned with a jolly striped bow, while the series has pre-launched exclusively at Raffles City, #01-44, available now till 30 November 2023.

NEW IN THE CITY

harnn, #01-13A

Known for their soothing, high-quality body care and wellness range, Thai beauty brand HARNN has recently unveiled their first-in-Singapore flagship store at Raffles City, a serene sanctuary that puts you at ease the moment you enter. HARNN’s creations are crafted using only natural ingredients, via methods gathered from generations of Thai artisans, for pampering skincare, body care, hair care and home spa products that promise to create that same sensorial experience in our homes. If you’re new to the brand, you can’t go wrong with the bestselling HARNN White Tea and Camellia collection, with its subtle, clean scent that reveals supple skin.

kiehl’s, #b1-39/40

Always at the forefront of skincare innovation, Kiehl’s is set to debut their first-ever Store of Tomorrow at Raffles City on 9 November 2023, a concept space that’s dedicated to expert skincare services involving new technologies. With the customer in mind, you can expect a curated skincare experience, via a complimentary deep skin analysis with Kiehl’s Derma Reader Pro Devices from Kiehl’s Skin Pros at the Skincare Academy Bay; this was something only previously seen at selected Kiehl’s outlets and pop-up events. We also heard that Kiehl’s will be introducing facial treatment services for the first time at the boutique, and, interestingly, a new Kiehl’s Cuddly-Coat Grooming Collection for furry friends!

Luxury Beauty Boutiques, Flagship Stores & More

exclusive services and products at the beauty boutiques

A whole range of beauty boutiques await at Raffles City Singapore, and these boast top-of-the-line design and services. Guerlain’s first standalone store, for instance, has a facial cabin so we can be whisked away for a pampering facial treatment; Gucci Beauty’s boutique opened to much fanfare while sporting the house’s eclectic, vintage-style codes; while Givenchy’s flagship boutique gives us their sophisticated range of makeup, premium skincare, and luxury fragrances, along with engraving services, all in one space.

Over at Aesop, the Australian brand is all about the multi-sensorial experience, especially enticing when there’s a Fragrance Armoire for us to journey through their one-of-a-kind scents. The Sephora store, on the other hand, is focused on tech-driven and interactive displays to elevate one’s shopping experience, with makeup tutorials readily available on screens, a Mobile Checkout service, and even a private facial cabin, exclusive to the Raffles City outlet.

L’OCCITANE has also launched their eco-concept boutique at the mall, complete with refilling stations, while shoppers may also explore classic favourites and renowned brands by simply walking about the first floor.

first-in-singapore fragrance boutiques

Fragrance fiends and those who love their scents ought to check out the myriad of options at Raffles City, where brands such as Creed and Diptyque have set up flagship boutiques. As a premium French-English hand-crafted perfume brand, Creed is eager to introduce personalisation services and tailored fragrance profiling at the store, alongside the exquisite Les Royales Premium Range, exclusively available here. Diptyque’s French-style boutique is very in line with the Parisian brand, with an adode-like atmosphere brimming with scented candles, fragrance bottles, diffusers, and more.

Then there’s Maison Francis Kurkdjian with their first dedicated boutique, which offers the full range of luxury and home fragrances by the legendary perfumer, including 724 and Baccarat Rouge 540. Acqua di Parma is yet another well-known name to launch their fragrance boutique at Raffles City, where, along with some of their iconic scents, the elegant Italian brand has opted for a first-of-its-kind Barbiere, which offers services such as haircuts and shave where you may try out Acqua di Parma’s facial products.

Of course, with the festive season almost upon us, it’s best to look out for more exciting festive offerings, pop-ups, events at Raffles City this November and December!

Meet the Journey NEXA — the Charging Laptop Sleeve you’ll want for your next work trip

A few months ago, we reviewed Journey’s ALTI Wireless Charging Desk Mat, and it hasn’t moved from our desk since it landed there. Now the brand has a portable laptop sleeve version of it and it’s incredible.

It’s called the NEXA, and Journey claims it’s the world’s first 4-in-1 laptop sleeve with wireless charging. We’ve seen laptop sleeves that can fold out into a computer and mouse mat (eg. Razer), but not one that does that with included charging. And Journey’s charges two devices (compatible phone and earbuds case) wirelessly just like its ALTI Wireless Charging Desk Mat.

There’s an included USB-C to USB-C cable included, and you’ll need your own charging head to plug this into.

There are two sizes for the sleeve — 13” / 14” and 15”/ 16” sleeve (the one featured fits the 14” MacBook Pro, as seen above).

It’s a nice snug fit that has some level of padding, with the edges all fully protected by the case. It also comes in two colours: Black (featured here), and Dove Grey that’s very sleek as well. The exterior is made from a smooth vegan leather, and the interior is a soft-quilted fabric that won’t scratch your device.

When opened flat, the top cover becomes a wireless charger. You’ll obviously need to plug in the USB-C cable and connect it to a power source for juice.

It has a MagSafe charger, which perfectly fits all iPhones with MagSafe functionality, and any other phone that can be wirelessly charged by the Qi standard — this includes the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip5, Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Nothing Phone 2 and more. The top pad charges earbud cases that can charge wirelessly, like the Apple AirPods Pro (seen here).

You can place the laptop on the NEXA sleeve as well so it becomes a computer mat. We give this new technology a thumbs up and will definitely be bringing it along for our next work trip. Additions we hope to see in future versions: a pocket to house the cable and maybe other small gadget things like SD cards, and maybe turn the top cover into an actual power bank that can keep charge so you don’t even need to plug in the cable to charge your devices while on the go with no power source. But we imagine that would increase the weight of this sleeve substantially. Anyway, judging from the ALTI desk mat and now this NEXA sleeve, we can’t wait to see what Journey has next in store.

The journey NEXA 4-in-1 Laptop Sleeve with Wireless Charging is priced at USD109.99 and available online at JOURNEYOFFICIAL.COM.

Tentsuru at St. Regis is the first Tempura Omakase we’ve tried, and it’s surprisingly good

When you think of omakase, sushi always comes to mind. So a tempura omakase is unusual (at least to me), and I went in thinking that I’d be sick of fried food by the end of the meal. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case and Master Chef Daiki Kawaguchi demonstrated that he’s really an expert at creating the lightest and fluffiest batter for any dish.

Tentsuru is located at St. Regis, which itself indicates this isn’t going to be a cheap meal. But is it worth the price? If you want to sample Chef Kawaguchi’s dishes, go for the Koto lunch set that’s priced at $120++ and includes six types of tempura (3 seafood and 3 vegetable). If you want to pick and choose, you can order tempura a la carte as well. But read our review first so you know what to go for.

Appetisers

Above: Tentsuru Champagne
Who doesn’t love starting a meal (any meal!) with champagne! This one was sparkling, bubbly, cold and refreshing.

Above: Deep Fried Sweetened Chestnuts
These chestnuts are sweetened and deep-fried in a potato starch batter, which is called hakusen-age. The batter was tasty and crispy, almost like a biscuit, and the chestnut was truly very sweet — as they should be.

Crab Cream Croquette
This dish is made by mixing crab with white sauce, breading and deep frying. It was creamy and not too cheesy. One serving of this was just right.

Saury Fish (Sanma) with Eringi Mushroom Yuan-Yaki
This fish is quite close to mackerel. I liked the flavour, and you’ll need to eat this in two bites. The muchrooms are meaty and go well with the fish.

Steamed Baby Taro (Kinugatsugi)
I like the way this was prepared. Crispy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside. A subtle flavour that wasn’t too starchy.

Tempura

Now begins the tempura, and there’s no better way to start it than with sake.

Above: Katsuyama Ice Valley
A light sake that isn’t dry. A little sweet and a little sour.

Condiments
With the following tempura, the chef has prepared the following condiments to complement each dish: Plum Sauce, Yuzu Pepper, Curry Salt, Sea Salt, Lemon Juice, Tendashi.

Above: Kurumaebi (Tiger prawn)
This is good with sea salt or lemon juice and was beautifully fried. You can hear the crunch from your neighbours as they bite into it. It’s hot and crispy, light, and you don’t taste the oiliness. You can also still taste the sweetness of the prawn. Often with deep fried seafood, the sweetness is compromised, but not in this case.

Above: Ginnan (Gingko Nut)
There are three balls. Pair the first with sea salt, the second with curry powder, and the third with the tempura sauce. We love that the chef makes recommendations and tells us what the correct pairings are. The curry powder as a condiment for tempura is not common, which makes it interesting, and this was my favourite pairing out of the three. Highly recommended.

Above: Kisu (Whiting)
I wasn’t expecting such a light fish. The tempura from the batter is thin, light and crispy. It’s best paired with the yuzu pepper and like the above tempura dishes, is absolutely delicious.

Above: Deep Fried Sakuraebi (Sakura Shrimp)
At first glance, this just looked like a lot of batter. But the second I bit into it, I said — I need to learn how to cook this for the kids; they will love it. This was a nice generous portion as well.

Side

Above: Sake Kuroushi
Oh wow, another sake that I like. This one was more flavourful and robust than the last; it’s fruity and tasty.

Above: Salmon Cedar-Plank with Ikura (salmon roe) & Hana Lotus Root
I loved the lotus root but not so much the salmon. The idea of the dish is interesting though, topped with the egg white foam. The fish was a tad hard and dry, but again, the lotus root was a delight. I would have preferred if this was prepared as sashimi instead of teriyaki-style.

Tempura

Above: Kinmedai (Red Eye Snapper)
I was surprised by how much I liked this fish. It is light, flaky, very fresh, and goes well with the plum sauce that the chef recommended. Very nice. I finished it. Not jelak at all.

Above: Maitake Mushroom
Super crispy and hot from the fryer; it has a subtle flavour but yet leaves you wanting more. Loved the flaky textured layers. A good mushroom if I must say so.

Above: Miyazaki Beef Sirloin
A meat dish, after all the seafood is a nice refreshing and balanced change. We are told that this is Wagyu A5 standard, and it was truly a very fatty beef. It went beautifully with the beef sauce that had a raw egg and shaved truffle. And for those who’ve not tried temporary beef before. This is an excellent introduction to it. The portion is just nice, not too much.

Main Course

Above: Anago Donburi
I’m generally not a fan of anago but this was fried beautifully (Chef Kawaguchi really is a master fryer). The accompanying miso soup is also very fragrant and cleanses the tummy.

Review

If you think you know tempura, you know nothing until you’ve tried Tentsuru. Master Chef Daiki Kawaguchi is truly a master at his craft and will serve you the lightest, fluffiest, least oily batter that will have you coming back for more. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this omakase that didn’t have raw food. With most tastings, there are hits and misses, but really only one miss here with the teriyaki salmon. Everything else is recommended and worth a trip down to his restaurant for.

Tentsuru is located at The St. Regis Singapore Level 2. Opening Hours are Tue-Sun Lunch 12pm-230pm and Dinner 6pm-1030pm. Visit tentsuru.com.sg for reservations.

Travel Through Sound: Marriott Bonvoy Collaborates With Musicians Parallelle For A Unique Take On Travel

Those who dream of travel often talk about sightseeing, taking in the world as we explore beaten and not-so-beaten paths that lead to eye-opening vistas, cruise down scenic rivers, admire the vast ocean, or simply stroll down beautiful boulevards; the spectacle of travel is, indeed, not lost on us. But what if we explore the world, not via our eyes, but through sound?

That’s a not-so-common yet powerful connection is one that Marriott Bonvoy wants us to embrace, thanks to a collaboration with Amsterdam-based multi-instrumentalists and electronic music composers, Parallelle. The talented duo, consisting of brothers Thomas and Julien De Bie, have put together a five-part video series that allows us to rediscover five popular destinations in Asia Pacific — namely, Java, Fiji, Osaka, Bangkok and Bengaluru — expressed through vibrant, expressive, and authentic sounds.

A unique way to experience travel — through sound, with Marriott Bonvoy and Parallelle

Called ‘A Day In’, this is a film project months in the making, with the duo travelling to various places, remote or otherwise, to capture the unique sonic identity of each destination, often by recording day-to-day sounds in order to express their stories and rich culture. These are then beautifully stitched together in their music studio, the everyday sounds transformed into beats, with melodic traditional instruments weaving in and out of the compositions. The music videos are accompanied by just-as-vivid cinematography by French filmmaker Amaud Moro.

“There is so much more to travel than meets the eye. Through sound, we can experience places and cultures like nothing you’ve ever known,” said Parallelle. “Our music transcends borders and infuses the richness of destinations, traditional music and from time to time, spotlights local musicians. We hope that our music can inspire people to explore new destinations and cultures.”

Close your eyes, and give each of these videos a listen. A journey through the streets of Bangkok tells of endless bustle, especially when weaved in with the distinct honks of tuk-tuks, though the rings of temple bells bring forth moments of serenity as well; fellow city Bengaluru treats us to a mesmerising symphony of street vendors and the whirring of fabric machines, alongside the melodic whistling of the traditional South Indian flute Nadaswaram.

Fiji comprises of acapella choirs among Fijian drum beats; the sound of the Japanese Taiko drum is unmistakable when channelling Osaka; while the sounds of the traditional gamelan and atmospheric echoes of volcanoes are invoked to amplify Java’s astounding beauty.

All these represent some of Marriott International’s exciting properties, out of an impressive portfolio of over 1,000 by the way, whether we’re talking about the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay in Fiji, W Osaka in Japan or W Bangkok in Thailand, JW Marriott Hotel Bengaluru in India, or the Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort & Spa in Indonesia.

Parallelle’s epic adventures; and how they’ve faithfully brought the sounds to life

When asked about the biggest takeaway from producing the series however, Parallelle, for all their sophisticated studio equipment and wealth of experience, have distilled their expansive journeys into something simple, pure: child-like discovery.

“The best part about it was that we got to go out there and experience all these encounters and stories — just discovering and learning things that we didn’t know. We were like little kids all the time! When you are a kid, you are discovering things for the first time and you are super excited about everything, which is also what life is about. The more you travel, the more you learn, and the more you stay curious as well,” Parallelle shared.

[click on the images below to expand.]

Another inspiring aspect would have to be the opportunity to meet local musicians from each region as well, where, as Thomas described, they can “share notes” and learn from “how they perceive music, the rhythm they go through, what harmony they take, what melodies they play”. “Music is a language that is felt by everyone in this world, maybe even animals to be honest,” he said.

“Some of the musicians we met might not know the name of the notes, but they know how it sounds. It’s like we could play something, and they would know exactly, oh yeah, this is the scale. It’s crazy to see,” shared Julien, echoing the same sentiments. Thomas further elaborated: “It feels right in your heart and in your body when you’re pushing a note, and then the note that should come after, you sort of feel that it’s going to be a good one. As a musician, you don’t really need to know the theory of what you’re playing — it’s a feeling.”

Since our interview was conducted at a breezy balcony overlooking the beach at W Bali, we were also interested to know about the duo’s experiences in Indonesia, where, for the sake of sound, they’ve travelled from Jakarta all the way to Yogyakarta (called “Jogja” for short).

At Java, they got introduced to the Gamelan, a traditional instrumental ensemble native to the Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese peoples of Indonesia; these mostly percussive instruments consist of metallophones, of sweet melodies brought out by the striking of mallets, often accompanied by angklungs, hand-played drums, and gongs.

“It was interesting to see that even though in Indonesia they use the Gamelan, the same instrument, in Java, would be played differently than, say, in Bali,” said Julien when describing their experience after having met, and jammed, with local musicians who were familiar with their craft.

“We don’t record all the time, but we always have a recorder with us all the time,” says Parallelle, consisting of brothers Julien and Thomas De Bie,

They also waxed on about what they described as the “Mission Impossible-style” experience of filming for the series, and the “insane” awe of hearing the rumbling of Mount Bromo, an active volcano, up close for the first time.

You see, other than Gamelan instruments, they’ve put their recorder up to the most curious collection of sounds, including but not limited to: the low bass of a volcano; raindrop sounds from the cave they had to literally rappel down into; rice terraces; the process of batik, from paintbrush on fabric to the quiet hum of sewing; stone carving; sifting through Kopi Luwak beans; and the cacophony of traffic and marketplaces of Jakarta.

And just like travel, Parallelle also shared that they’ve left room for spontaneity to thrive, keeping both their schedules and minds open in order to be authentic to the cultures they’re aiming to represent — to essentially, let the unexpected happen.

“You don’t want it to be too planned, otherwise it becomes staged. You want to really explore as if you’re a tourist who’s coming for the first time, where you’d be impressed by everything that is around you,” said Thomas. Parallelle’s genuine curiosity and strife for authenticity in their work, have certainly granted us insights that are just as inspiring as the sounds they’ve uncovered.

An exclusive Marriott Bonvoy Moment experience with Parallelle

As part of the collaboration, the hotel brand has also curated a music-focused Marriott Bonvoy Moments experience with Prrallelle, one of many in a unique programme where Marriott Bonvoy members can bid points on or redeem one-of-a-kind experiences during their vacations. The hotel group’s loyalty programme allows travellers to earn points whenever we stay at properties that include The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Sheraton, W Hotels, Aloft and more.

Held earlier in May this year, it involved an exclusive masterclass with Parallelle at the W Sound Suite, a private music studio at W Bali, where members get to create personalised electronic music samples, along with VIP Access to Dissolve Weekend, where, against the backdrop of the ocean and salty air, Parallelle put on a live performance of EDM music, which also weaved in some of the unique sounds discovered on their sonic travels.

The new foldable OPPO Find N3 has an incredible Hasselblad camera system, and a gorgeous, premium build

Everyone gets excited over a foldable smartphone. It looks impressive when you open it up, and your friends always ask to “see it”. And after keeping it secret for so long, OPPO today unveils the Find N3 — their most advanced and dare I say, most desirable phone in their lineup.

The OPPO Find N3 is gorgeous. It comes in a semi-matte gold finish that is very classy, but it’s their black version with the leather back that has me and all the photographers I know lusting over.

For a foldable, it’s actually really compact. When unfolded, it’s only 5.8mm in thickness (which is really very thin), its height is 153.4mm, and the whole unit weighs just 239g (for the black version featured here).

The unfolded display is a generous 7.8” and has a peak brightness of 2800nits, which is the brightness screen that’s come across our Editor’s desk. For photographers editing photos on their screen under a bright sun, this is a big deal.

As beautiful as this phone is, it’s really the camera system that’s the most exciting. OPPO has created the lenses in partnership with Hasselblad, and includes a 48MP 24mm Wide Camera, 48MP 14mm Ultra Wide Camera, and a 64MP 70mm Telephoto lens that’s gonna be fun to use.

Hasselblad comes in with its signature colour calibration and there’s, wait for it… XPAN mode. A fellow photographer who discovered the XPAN function on the Find N3 started jumping up and down like Tom Cruise in front of Oprah — he was that excited.

There’s an included 67W charger in the box, which enables fast charging — you get over 80% in just 30 minutes and a full charge in 42 minutes. There’s no wireless charging though.

This past week, I took some portrait shots with the Find N3 periscope 70mm telephoto camera, which has 3x optical zoom. The photos turned out truly impressive and I can understand the cult and hype surrounding the launch of this in Singapore. Have a look.

Review: Takahashi Singapore, the debut of renowned Sushi Takahashi of Tokyo

Sushi Takahashi of Tokyo, an omakase restaurant in Ginza, is known for their six-month waitlists and of course their sushi. Their first location outside of Japan lands in Singapore and it’s helmed by Chef Rinto Sasagawa, who was the protégé of Chef Jun Takahashi for eight years.

Above: Chef Rinto Sasagawa of Takahashi Singapore.

This 25-year-old relocated to Singapore and his purpose is to bring the refined elegance of omakase dining to our shores. No doubt this chef seems young for his role, he’s a master of the art of sushi and kappa-style kaiseiki. The dishes he hopes to introduce will incorporate time-honoured traditions of Japan and meld it to local tastebuds.

We tried the Shoshu Menu ($320++), which includes six kinds of nigiri and nine dishes (our tasting set included two additional nigiri). Read on for our review of the meal.

Karesansui Zen Garden Platter
Ikura. Dashi & Yuzu Zest

Above: Karesansui Zen Garden Platter.

The Garden Plater is very pretty and consists of three dishes. The first was a pretty straightforward ikura. You can’t go wrong with ikura unless it’s not fresh, but this one was. The Buri with Radish Paste and Chilli Pepper is a fatty yellow tail. It was very fresh, refreshing and a good appetiser to open up the appetite. Lastly, there’s the Marinated Aged Ankimo. This was yummy. A good small portion of tasty liver to leave you wanting more.

Competition between 2 Eels
Unagi, Anago, Sansho Pepper. Seaweed Salt. Wasabi. Pickied Sansho

Above: Chef Rinto Sasagawa preparing the two types of eel side by side.

I love that they put the salt and pepper on the side. The unagi is delightful. Skin was crisp and had a lovely barbecue flavour. The anago was soft, which this meat usually is, but I’m not a fan of its texture. Like the unagi, this was grilled. I would have preferred to have it grilled longer.

Above: Unagi and Anago.

Signature Crab Croquette
Snow Crab. Crab Bisque. Italian Autumn Truffles. Cream

Above: signature crab croquette.

I’ve not eaten a crab croquette prepared in this manner before and this felt cosy and warm, like comfort food. It was surprisingly under-salted, which I suppose makes it not so jelak considering this is a meaty, gooey, dish with a rich texture.

Scallop Chawanmushi
Hokkaido Scallop. Scallop Dashi. Black Pepper. Yuzu. Lotus Root Crisp

Above: scallop chawanmushi.

I love chawanmushi but unfortunately not this one. It was gooey (like the precious dish) and didn’t have the familiar steamed egg texture that I was expecting. But I can understand what the chef is trying to do with this dish and introduce a new way of presenting it.

Nigiri Course

Ishidai • Stone Perch (Mikawa Aichi Prefecture)
Finished with Yuzu & Moshio

Above: ishidai.

Oooooo, this fish is chewy. The hint of yuzu comes out immediately. Meaty and filling, so good if you’re hungry.

Amaebi • Sweet Shrimp
served with Osetra Caviar & Moshio

Above: amaebi.

This one I really liked. The powdered moshio gives this sushi another dimension of flavour. Very tasty and well done.

Saba • Mackerel (Mikawa Aichi Prefecture)
finished with Ginger & Spring Onion

Above: saba.

This recipe is a favourite with all Asians. Onion and ginger obviously go well together and on a familiar fish like mackerel, this suits most Singaporean tastebuds.

Menuke • Deep Sea Rock Fish (Hokkaido)
Charcoal torched with ginger

While chef was preparing this we could smell the charcoal burning and it smelt delicious. This fish was introduced to us as a very rare fish, and when aburi-ed, it brings out the oils and has a very rich taste. There was some kick to the ginger, and this fish actually tasted new to me. A bit fishy, but interesting. I was so happy eating this sushi, I forgot to photograph it. It was that good.

Nishin • Herring (Hokkaido) with Kombu. Sesame & Nori

Above: nishin.

This was refreshing and different from the usual sushi. It’s both sweet and sour, with a crunch to it. The seaweed was nicely toasted.

Palate Cleanser
Japanese Persimmons with Cream Cheese Tofu Sauce

Above: japanese persimmons with cream cheese tofu sauce.

This is what the chef calls a short break before the tunas. I don’t personally like persimmon but I liked this one. Japanese fruits are always on a different level.

Akami Zuke • Marinated Blue Fin Tuna
Hokkaido Hunka Bay

Above: akami zuke.

Nice. Familiar, comforting flavours. Tuna always ticks the right boxes but this one is a precursor to two more tuna sushis.

Chutoro • Medium Fatty Blue Fin Tuna
Hokkaido Hunka Bay

Above: chutoro.

Nice and fatty. But wait for it.

Ootoro • Fatty Tuna
Hokkaldo Hunka Bay

Above: ootoro.

This is the fattiest bit. It melts in the mouth and meets expectations. This trio of tuna was such a good idea. It gives the diner the opportunity to discover which part of the tuna you like best, so you could perhaps order it ala carte in the future.

Uni Ankimo Rice Bowl
Ankimo Rice. Rishiri Murasaki Uni. Marinated Ankimo. Narazuke Aged Gourd

Above: uni ankimo rice bowl.

I really liked this dish. Though it was small, it was very tasty. The uni was fresh and the seaweed tempura was nicely crisped. Delicious and I could eat this again.

Signature Awabi with Uni Handroll
Awabi Katsu, Uni Tartar. Awabi Liver Sauce, Rishiri Murasaki Uni

Above: signature awabi with uni handroll.

This handroll was quite different from the usual handroll. The abalone being made into a katsu was an interesting choice, and it was very meaty. Too meaty for my liking but I’m sure lots of abalone fans will like this.

Tamago with Caramel Sauce

Above: tamago with caramel sauce.

My plus one told me that every restaurant does their tamago differently so I shouldn’t ever dismiss this egg dish. At Takahashi Singapore, the caramel sauce turned this into a sweet dessert that wasn’t too filling and was a nice end to the savoury meal.

Bonito Soup with Asari Clam
Ichiban Dashi. Asari Clam

Above: bonito soup with asari clam.

The bonito is aged three years and it forms the base of this soup. And it was one of the highlights of the meal. I could hear other diners going “mmmm” while drinking it and when I tried it myself, I could understand why. It is very pang; a good warm end to the meal.

Homemade Muscat Daifuku with Mizu Shingen Mochi
Azuki. Muscat Grape Mochi | Bean Powder, Brown Sugar Syrup

Matcha Tea Ceremony
Shizuoka Matcha

Above: dessert and matcha tea.

I believe that desserts shouldn’t be overly complicated, but they should delight. I was delighted with the muscat grape inside the ball, plus the pairing with the matcha tea that was freshly whisked.

The meal left us full, but not bloated. There were lots of dishes that we liked, and we would recommend this restaurant for anniversaries, birthdays, and definitely omakase fans. It’s an intimate setting with only 12 seats at the counter, and a private room that can house an additional 8 — which makes it perfect for business luncheons too (there’s a lunch Koyo Menu at $180++ with eight kinds of nigiri and six dishes).

Takahashi Singapore is located at 4 Mohamed sultan road, and is open Mon-Sun 12pm-3pm and 7pm-10.30pm, closed on Tuesdays. For reservations, you can call +65 8877 0501 or email info@takahashi.com.sg. Visit their website for more at www.takahashi.sg.

The Miss Dior Bag From The Cruise 24 Collection — As Seen On Jisoo And Other Celebrities

No one does airport fashion like our darling k-celebs, so imagine our delight when Jisoo, of BLACKPINK fame of course, rocked up to the Incheon Airport, just before the SS24 show at Paris, touting a new, exquisite Dior bag. The bag in question? The Miss Dior.

With a name this iconic, it’s inevitable that we’re getting all the iconic motifs from the house of Dior in this Cruise 24 Collection design. Maria Grazia Chiuri pays tribute to Dior’s heritage with a refined silhouette, combining a structured rectangular style with soft, curved lines.

A top handle design is paired with a precious gold chain, done in supple leather bearing the graphics of Dior’s iconic cannage. The bag is then topped off with delicate D-I-O-R charms, a hardware detail that contrasts against its quilted body.

Ahead, the Miss Dior bag, as worn on celebrities and influencers including: Jisoo, Dilireba, Kimberley, Tontawan, Taksaorn Paksukcharern, Suzu Hong, Minha Kim, Eunse Ki, Heejung Park, Suesasha and Anne Thongprasom.

Samsung Unveils S23 Galaxy FE, Buds FE And Tab S9 FE, Offering Flagship Experiences At Entry-Point Prices

If you’ve always wanted to try Samsung’s flagship Galaxy series, but can’t quite justify spending over $1,000 on a smartphone, you might find something in Samsung‘s latest FE line-up, which presents devices from the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem at more accessible price points. The new Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+, and Galaxy Buds FE are, therefore, the perfect entry point models if you’ve always been interested in the tech company’s most premium innovations.

New to the series is an FE version of the Galaxy Buds, available for the first time this year; as for the Galaxy S23 FE smartphone and Galaxy Tab S9 FE series tablets, these are packed with advanced capabilities without any major tradeoffs in terms of features. The Galaxy S23 FE, for instance, sees the same sleek and iconic design with a premium finish, and has a pro-grade camera for sharp photos, selfies, portraits and videos.

Take a look at each of the devices below —

S23 FE

The Galaxy S23 FE should look familiar if you’ve been a fan of the S23 series, and comes with a smooth 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and full IP68 rating for water and dust resistance as well. There’s also an element of fun with a whole range of six vibrant colours — mint, cream, graphite and purple, along with indigo and tangerine if you order online.

Another major pro is the camera, of a 50MP high-resolution lens, and 3X optical zoom to help capture great photos, selfies and portraits in life-like colours, with a Nightography mode for after-hours snaps. In Pro Mode, we’re able to manually control shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and other functions as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, available for purchase ONLINE in Singapore from 10 October 2023, and in-store from 20 October 2023, at $888 (128GB) and $988 (256GB). in Mint, Cream, Graphite, Purple, and Samsung Online Store exclusive colours – Indigo and Tangerine.

Buds FE

The Galaxy Buds FE is just as decent, and brings Samsung’s advanced sound experience to us, offering deep and rich sound, and just like the flagship device, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Ambient Sound as well. What’s great is that it provides up to 8.5 hours of playback with earbuds, or 6 hours of playback when using ANC, and rated IPX2 just like Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 2. Inspired by the ergonomic design of the series, the Galaxy Buds FE are designed for long-wear comfort, and enable a more customised fit with three different sizes of ear tips and two different sizes for wingtips.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds FE, available in Singapore from 20 October 2023, at $158. In Graphite and White.

Tab S9 FE Series

On to the tablets! Both the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+ offer large-screen viewing, and come with the versatile S Pen that allows us to use the tablets in more functional ways, whether you’re in the creative line or using it for more standard productivity needs. This is done with improved device speed and a better performance compared to the previous FE Series.

The Tab S9 FE comes with a 10.9-inch screen, and the S9 FE Plus has a 12.4-inch display, both LCD screens featuring an automatic refresh rate that adapts up to 90Hz. Just like the newest Galaxy Tab S9 series, both the devices boast an IP68 rating, with long-lasting battery life of up to 18 hours and 20 hours of video playback on a single charge for the Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE+ respectively.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE+, available in Singapore from 20 October 2023, from $669. in Mint and Grey for the Galaxy Tab S9 FE, and silver for the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+.

LOEWE X ON: CLOUDTILT, a lifestyle shoe inspired by the endless possibilities of movement

LOEWE announces a new collaboration with On, a running shoe brand with Swiss engineering offering sneakers that have the experience of “running on clouds”. With LOEWE, they’ve designed a lifestyle shoe called the Cloudtilt; and it’s made to move. It’s On’s first shoe in its lifestyle range to incorporate CloudTec® Phase: a computer-generated midsole technology that offers cushioning with fewer components for a smooth, ultra-lightweight ride; plus Finite Element Analysis software simulates walking stress on the legs and feet, which translates to superior cushioning for the user.

The LOEWE x On Cloudtilt blends craft, technology, performance and sustainability; featuring a knitted sock construction, speed laces, and of course, the collaborative branding. The outer sole is made from EVA foam to provide a soft landing and minimise the use of rubber (which only features in targeted contact spots), and has an engineered mesh upper made from 99% recycled polyester.

The shoe will come in a myriad of colours and will pre-launch on LOEWE.COM October 11 ahead of the official launch on October 12 in selected LOEWE and On stores and ON.COM.

Accessories from the CHANEL Spring-Summer 2024 Ready-To-Wear collection

CHANEL’s upcoming Spring-Summer 2024 Ready-to-Wear collection is as expected, elegant and very desirable. The brand always finds new ways to reinterpret their classics (like tweed and their iconic flap bags), and this season is made to be an invitation to be more carefree and enjoy life — and this translates into gorgeous and wearable pieces that will last in your wardrobe for generations to come.

We love the play on lines and checks, and the usual layering of pearl necklaces that instantly elevate an outfit. But this season, what really got our attention is the camera bag, shown in black, beige, white and this incredible wine red. The accessories (especially the bags) are always the highlight for us, so here are the close-ups for a better look at what was on the runway last week.
