UROK Foundation is a Mental Health Initiative That Wants to Change The World with Music

“One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain” were the wise words sang by Bob Marley in his 1975 hit single Trenchtown Rock. Well, the reggae legend had obviously never gotten trapped in a room with stereo speakers blasting death metal on loop before. But that’s beside the point. Music heals, and it’s a form of medication we can’t live without.
It is this novel approach that the UROK Foundation is banking on for its philanthropic cause. Founded by former NYLON chief-in-commander Marvin Scott Jarrett, and not to be confused with Project UROK, another charity initiative with a similar name, the UROK Foundation is all about raising mental health awareness through music and the arts.
Here’s the man who’s starting it all:

#UROK @villagestudios @applemusic #2018

A post shared by Marvin Scott Jarrett (@marvinjarrett) on

“This cause is very personal and important to me. I have experienced my own issues with depression and music has always helped me. I have a lot of relationships in the music industry, and my goal was to bring artists together to create music and concerts. Using that, we can help to destigmatize the attitudes surrounding mental health”, said Scott Jarrett.
And boy, the UROK Foundation is indeed big on music. So big, there have already been collaborations lined up on Apple Music and Spotify even before the foundation’s website has officially been launched. You can check out the EP below, which features the likes of Grammy award-winning rapper Sirah, singer-songwriter O’Neill Hudson, and Marvin’s band Visitor.

If you’d like to contribute to the cause, all you’ve got to do is spare a bit of cash and purchase the EP on iTunes. All proceeds will go to the UROK Foundation. More than that, you’ll also be raising awareness for a societal issue that has been ignored for far too long, while listening to great music at the same time. At the very least, you’ll help an upcoming charity initiative make its mark on the world.
What’s there to lose?

L'Oreal Paris Features a Hijab-wearing Model in Its Latest Haircare Campaign

From launching inclusive shade ranges, casting diverse faces in beauty campaigns, and tailoring innovative garments like the Pro Hijab, brands have started to change the way they speak to a new generation of consumers. While their efforts are widely lauded for getting representation right, some of us have questioned the actual motivation behind this diversification, since it’s rather easy to capitalise on the success of “The Fenty Effect”.
L’Oreal Paris’ latest ad, however, truly nails it.

For its new Elvive campaign, the haircare brand brought on Amena Khan as one of its new faces. Having donned a headscarf in public since her 20s, the Muslim beauty blogger never imagined she’d be featured in a mainstream haircare campaign. But when a brand as major as L’Oreal Paris knocked on her door and invited her to join a diverse league of men and women, she couldn’t turn it down – taking part would make a huge statement.

I arrived to a set that was beyond anything I could imagine. With several open studio areas spread across a giant building, the first thing that hit me was the scale of the project. There were colourful sets assembled with multiple people behind the cameras. Amongst the buzzing of constant activity, the crew & @lorealhair team would often smile & say hello, always welcoming. Shoots like this are invariably stressful somewhere along the line, but I didn’t detect a hint of that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In the makeup room, I couldn’t contain my excitement about the project. @karindarnell regaled us with stories about the celeb world (being Riri’s MUA), all the while swiftly working her magic with makeup. We exchanged stories of working & of motherhood. @neelamkg joined us. Being an internationally successful model, I’m always struck by how “real” & humble she is. All 3 of us chatted away about life, triumph & sacrifice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Lunch was great – lots of Vegan options so I was happy. The atmosphere was energised, especially as @ling.kt was on my table. She uplifts everyone around her. I ate quickly as we had some outdoor photography to do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Our beloved weather did the predictable… as we stood at the main door, it started to drizzle. But before I knew it, someone had slipped a robe & slippers on me. There I was, in a van with 5 other people from the team, driving down to the canal in the area. It was surreal but exhilarating. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Back at the studio, super friendly @francescajordan did touch ups as it grew closer to my turn. The photographer was the legendary genius, @rankinarchive. A quiet, down to earth man, he was deliberate & thoughtful in every shot. I felt confident, unexpectedly calm & filled with gratitude. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then came the interview. Lisa, the interviewer, put me at ease quickly. She has the kind of vibe that makes it easy to speak with honesty – to just be yourself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀When the long day finished & I was back on the train home, I reflected… not on how awesome this campaign (obviously) is, but more on the kindness I was privileged to have encountered that day (in so many more ways), & the beauty in connection between human beings <3

A post shared by Amena (@amenaofficial) on

Though she doesn’t leave home without her hijab, Amena actually spends much of her day at home or around loved ones without it. With this game-changing campaign, she makes a strong case for the importance of haircare, visible or not. “You have to wonder – why is it presumed that women that don’t show their hair don’t look after it?” she asked Vogue UK. “The opposite of that would be that everyone that does show their hair only looks after it for the sake of showing it to others. And that mindset strips us of our autonomy and our sense of independence. Hair is a big part of self-care.”

The UK-based Muslim beauty blogger isn’t just the co-founder of Ardere Cosmetics, she’s also the founder of a hijab company called Pearl Daisy. And since she starred in L’Oreal’s True Match campaign back in 2016, featuring her in a game-changing one like this is indeed a no-brainer. Promoting the act of self-care to overcome decades of inadequate representation with this campaign, L’Oreal is certainly setting the standard for beauty campaigns to come.

Tiny Sunglasses Are Going To Be The Next Big Thing

2017 was all about the bigger the better, but 2018 is about less is more.
Just like most of the other fashion trends, it started off with the runway. Balenciaga and Prada walked them down the catwalk, and celebrities like Kendall and Rihanna have all switched out last year’s oversized sunglasses for smaller ones. We are already totally in love with tiny sunglasses because not only are they easier to tote around, the smaller frames exude more of an edgy, ‘look at me’ vibe.

Don’t believe us?

Even Kanye West is all about tiny sunnies, and we know how he tends to make things trendy (whether it’s for a good or bad reason, that’s a whole other story). According to his wife, Kim Kardashian shared that “(Kanye) sent me a whole email like, ‘You cannot wear big sunglasses any more. It’s all about tiny little glasses. He sent me, like, millions of 90s photos with tiny little glasses.’” Not only is Kim ditching her oversized sunnies, her sisters Kendall and Kourtney have also followed in her footsteps with downsized sunnies of their own.

If you want to keep up with the Kardashians, here are some of our favourite picks which you might want to snap up. You want to be leading the pack when it comes to trends, and here’s a headstart for 2018.

Celebrity Kids Try to Emulate Famous Parents in New Supermodel Reality Series

If there’s one universal truth, it’s that growing up is never easy. Thing is, shit gets a lot more complicated when your parents are famous. First of all, you’re automatically placed on this pedestal, where pressure to succeed is the norm. Secondly, there’s that nasty task of stepping out of their shadow – not fun at all.
It’s not a situation that most of us normal people can relate to, but for the cast of Growing Up Supermodel, it’s practically daily life. The new reality TV series, which premieres on Jan 23, 9pm (SIN/HK) on LIFETIME, follows a group of hot young models risking it all to live up to the careers of their famous parents.

ASIA_Growing-Up-Supermodel_Keyart_SINHK

Cast members include the children of Ricky Schroder, Cambrie and Faith Schroder, Oscar De La Hoya’s and Shanna Moakler’s daughter, Atiana De La Hoya; as well as Arissa Le Brock, Cairo Peele, Jake Morritt, and Janis Ostojic.

Like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, who both sport famous surnames, the new celebrity kids are banking on their DNA to make the cut. But they’re about to find out that things won’t be that easy. Plus, their parents are involved in the show too, so there’s awkwardness and unresolved family issues lingering in the background.

It all makes for a very entertaining show, and one that offers a different dimension to all the bitching and drama of Asia’s Next Top Model. If anything, it just goes to show that even though some people are born with a golden spoon in their mouths, it takes a lot more than just having famous parents to make it in life.
Growing Up Supermodel premieres on Jan 23, 9pm (SIN/HK) on LIFETIME, Singtel TV Ch 302 and Starhub TV Ch 514. For more information, visit mylifetime.com.

Finally, a Highlighting Palette Made to Flatter Darker Skin Tones

Diversity in the beauty industry took a leap in the right direction last year, with Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty launch doing girls and boys from all over the globe proud. Of course, we didn’t forget the statement Huda Kattan made in 2017, too. Her cult-favourite makeup line Huda Beauty featured 30 shades of #FauxFilter Foundation, and together with RiRi, she set the bar for everyone in the beauty industry, including herself.
When it comes to highlighting, Huda Kattan clearly knows best, so when she teased the new Bronze Sands 3D Highlighter Palette, catering to those with darker skin tones, we were definitely more excited than surprised. It’s about time we let deeper skin tones shine. Literally.

The palette will be the 5th in the brand’s lineup of highlighting quads, and similar to its predecessors, the Bronze Sands 3D Highlighter Palette contains 1 cream shade and 3 powder shades for you to play with. We’ve spotted a fairly deep bronze shade called Aruba, a stunning dark peach named Bora Bora, a beautiful champagne gold dubbed Maldives, and a deeper gold shade known as Barbados (a nod to Rihanna, perhaps?). Each individual colour is meant to be worn on its own or layered for that sculpted, sun-kissed glow Huda herself is known for.

Follow These Tips For Longer Lasting Denims

Yesterday, users on Twitter were having an intense debate about jeans, specifically their jeans-washing habits. Two teams formed: those who wash their jeans after almost every wear and those who prefer to leave them out of their laundry baskets.

https://twitter.com/woehrlwind/status/950442336953290753

We aren’t sure why this debate sprung up but it got us thinking – how often should we wash our denims? Apparently the best way to get jeans that fit you better is by washing them less so that the fabric stretches to fit your body. If you put it in the wash too often, the fibres become rigid again and contract, thus bringing you back to square one. Being violently spun around in the machine frequently can also result in more damage to your denims.
So if we’re not supposed to wash them, then how do we keep them clean? Well, not to worry! We have compiled some tips to help you maintain your favourite pair of jeans, without having to compromise on hygiene.

1. Spot clean
If you just have a small stain on your jeans, you don’t have to throw the whole pair into the washing machine! You just need an old toothbrush or a damp cloth and use some mild soap to scrub the stain away. That way, the fabric wouldn’t stiffen up and your jeans will still look amazing
2. Don’t wash your jeans so often
Okay, so according to Levi’s CEO, Chip Bergh, you never have to wash your favourite pair of Levi’s! This is because the bacteria and microbes that are found on your jeans after they have been worn are from your own body and fairly harmless. Also, it helps save water so it’s a win-win!
Well, not really. When the microbes are left on your clothes for an extended period of time, they break down your sweat and skin cells which makes your jeans smell. Yuck. To maintain a well-balanced jeans-washing cycle, we recommend that you wash your jeans after 4-6 wears – enough time for the jeans to form to your body and before the smell becomes noticeable.

jeans2

3. Turn them inside out
Naturally, the indigo dye may start fading after numerous washes. Some people may prefer the distressed/worn in look but if you want to maintain the original colour of your jeans for as long as possible, turn your jeans inside out when you put them into the washing machine. This prevents excessive fading and colour loss. Furthermore, Levi’s says that “a good fade comes from living in your jeans, not an aggressive spin cycle”. So get that natural fade and keep your jeans in great condition by ensuring that they’re flipped out before you bring them for a wash!
4. Use the right detergent
When you bring your jeans for a wash, ensure that you’re using the right detergent (and the right amount!) to ensure that the dyes don’t get washed out! According to J Brand’s former head of design, Mary Bruno, most laundry detergents also have optical brighteners that will change the colour of your jeans. So opt for something milder and try to get your hands on detergents that have pumps so you have just the right amount for your laundry.

Jeans1

5. Opt for a cold-water spin
With soap, comes water. Use cold water when you wash your denims to retain the dyes in the denim for a longer time! It also protects against shrinking so you can maintain those comfy form-fitting jeans. A cold-water spin also saves energy thus resulting in savings on your electricity bills. This is the true win-win situation!
6. Hang them out to dry
Putting your jeans in the dryer causes great damage. The lint you see in dryers is actually the result of fabrics breaking down after being vigorously spun around! It’s better to hang your jeans out to dry to help preserve the fit and prevent shrinkage. Anyway, most of our homes in Singapore don’t have a dryer because we have the almighty sun, which is also free of charge – the perfect drying method for sunny Singapore. UV rays from the sun also help to kill bacteria on clothes but remember to keep them turned inside out to protect your jeans from excessive fading.

Whether you prefer the distressed look or want to keep your jeans as good as new, one thing’s for sure: we all would love to have a pair of comfy jeans that just fit our bodies well. So follow these tips for the perfect pair of jeans while keeping hygiene a top priority!

Recreate the Blossoming of Spring With CHANEL's Fresh Makeup Collection

When it comes to creating fresh beauty looks, CHANEL never disappoints. The luxury brand got us all green-eyed over their Spring/Summer Neapolis range recently, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down, evident in their latest makeup collection.

Christened Dernières Neiges, the special edition lineup of textures and colours were created by CHANEL’s Makeup Creation studio, and it draws inspiration from a particular trans-seasonal moment, capturing that final sprinkling of snow, right before blossoms begin to bloom. Reflecting the healthy, radiant skin the Le Blanc range symbolises, the luminous curation bears watercolour tinges of rose, pearl white, pastel blue, and mint green, intensified on the complexion thanks to the iridescent finishes.
Needless to say, we were immediately drawn to the new Exclusive Creation Premierès Fleurs. Those fragile branches, delicate blossoms, and ancient Greek patterns embossed on a gradient of white, peach-pink, and mauve make for a refreshing take on a compact blush. Swirl your brush in the pan and swipe it on to impart a healthy glow on the cheeks, or play around with each individual colour to create infinite radiant looks.

Anastasia Beverly Hills' Soft Glam Palette Has Been Officially Revealed

Anastasia Beverly Hills just announced the release of its first ever powder bronzers over the weekend and now, the brand has revealed photos and swatches of its latest eyeshadow palette, Soft Glam. The brand has experienced hits (Modern Renaissance Palette) and misses (Subculture Palette) with their eyeshadow palettes in the past but we’re hoping that this palette hits it out of the ballpark because it just looks amazing!

Anatasia

The palette features warmer tones with shades of pink that come together to create a rosy colour palette that is just perfect for Spring. ABH’s president, Claudia Soare, explained on Instagram that she made this palette for her mum, Anastasia Soare, whom enjoys neutrals. The palette also allows you to create bright yet natural bridal beauty looks – ideal for makeup artists to have on hand.
Unfortunately, the early reveal was not ABH’s initial plan. Photos of the palette were leaked on Instastories by Kicks, a Swedish make up chain, akin to Sephora. Claudia Soare, who goes by @norvina1 on social media, took to twitter to call out the culprits and expressed her frustration at the unauthorised leak.

https://twitter.com/norvina1/status/953008658870226944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bustle.com%2Fp%2Fanastasia-beverly-hills-new-palette-just-leaked-while-its-gorgeous-the-leak-is-totally-not-cool-7913243
https://twitter.com/norvina1/status/953008913795883008

Fans were quick to comfort Soare by expressing their excitement for the palette and reassured her that the palette looked gorgeous. We have to say, we totally agree with them! Nothing hits the spot better than a few pink tones, if you ask us.

Soare treated fans to swatches on Snapchat, giving them a closer look at the amazing shades in the Soft Glam palette.

https://twitter.com/norvina1/status/953026833133355008?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bustle.com%2Fp%2Fanastasia-beverly-hills-new-palette-just-leaked-while-its-gorgeous-the-leak-is-totally-not-cool-7913243
tmp_oOS9O9_4fe888178df9d7a5_IMG_1505_copy

It is a bittersweet moment for ABH – the teasers and surprise reveal of the palette that were already pre-planned had been compromised by the leak but fans are still rallying behind the brand and eagerly looking forward to its release. The good news is that we don’t have to wait too long! According to ABH’s Instagram post, the palette would be available this March so keep your eyes peeled for more information on the specific launch date.

CHANEL's New Cushion Smells So Darn Good

Cushion formulations have conquered the realm of beauty, and it’s certainly no passing fad. From cushion blushers to brow cushions and even cushion eyeliner, you’d think the race to release various forms of cushion products would come to a grinding halt soon, but from what we’ve seen recently, there’s no stopping this train to Bouncy Town.
Case in point? CHANEL’s Chance Eau Tendre Delicate Fragrance Touch-Up, their new cushion fragrance.

chance-eau-tendre-5g.3145891267075

You’re probably well-acquainted with the scent of Chance, the brand’s youthful floral fragrance that made waves when it first joined CHANEL’s league of perfumes. This time, CHANEL is offering a new, unexpected way of applying this refreshing fragrance – and turns out, it’s not a powder fragrance like we anticipated.
Similar to Byredo’s Kabuki Perfume, you won’t have to spritz whiffs of grapefruit and jasmine from a bottle or swipe it on with a rollerball – simply use the applicator to dab the refreshing gel onto your pulse points for a quick scented pick-me-up. Chic and lightweight, it rivals the convenience of perfume oils, so it’s practically the perfect touch-up accessory to have, sitting pretty next to the cushion foundation in your bag. Just make sure you don’t grab the wrong one and dab fragrance on your cheek, and vice versa.

While we’re on the topic of beauty, we gotta give CHANEL’s new Instagram account @chanel.beauty a shoutout. This new platform allows the brand to share its unique take on beauty and makeup, honing in on product innovations and creativity. It’s also a great way to peek into the mind of CHANEL’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer, Lucia Pica. With this fresh handle, beauty fans and CHANEL fans alike can get a little closer to the brand and its means of expression.

CHANEL Chance Eau Tendre Delicate Fragrance Touch-Up. $110, available now at CHANEL Beauty stores and counters.

Clutch Your Pearls For The Premiere Of RuPaul's Drag Race Thailand

Fact: everybody loves RuPaul’s Drag Race.
The series just announced the cast for it’s All Stars Season 3, following a monumental nine-year stint on American cable TV, drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova of YouTube series UNHhhh just bagged a regular role on The Trixie and Katya Show on Viceland, and creator himself RuPaul just won the Critics’ Choice Television Award For Best Reality Show Host.
Clearly what was pitched as a niche programme aimed to generate a loyal cult following’s not justifiable for its obvious culture-shifting abilities, because on top of all the accolades the show has received, Piyarat Kaljareuk of production company Katana Group Public Ltd Co. just announced a series spinoff happening in the Land of Smiles, RuPaul’s Drag Race Thailand!!!

Just between us squirrel-friends, we can’t express how excited we are for this! Not only is Thailand home to the cosiest glamping haunts and ground-shaking music festivals, it’s also known for it’s delicious street food, endless shopping options and… exuberant after-hours fun. Of course Singapore would be our pick if we were on the board deciding where next to expand the series, but Thailand’s just a few-hours flight away — who knows, a few seasons down we might get nation-pride Kumar or Becca D’Bus a coveted spot as contestants…?
Besides announcing the cast for the premiere season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Thailand, no further information of the show’s format or teases have dropped yet. Of course, we can only hope for the more of the same wildly comical bickering, glamorous sashaying, and more next-level childish catchphrases to add to our library.

So here’s the pioneer batch of contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race Thailand: “Gentlemen, start your engines; and may the best woman win!”

There's A New Harry Potter Film And It's All About Voldemort

It has been around 7 years since the last film of the Harry Potter Series was screened in cinemas and many Potterheads are still craving more from J.K. Rowling’s epic book series. Also, we currently have the Fantastic Beasts series but we just want more Harry Potter. The last addition to the series was Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, written as a stage play and is currently being staged at London’s West End. The play will also be heading to New York this March and to Melbourne in 2019.

Well, for Potterheads who can’t get their hands on those play tickets, we have some extraordinary news for you: a new Harry Potter film has just been released on YouTube!
Okay, technically, it isn’t an official film. This new film, called Voldemort: Origins of the Heir, is actually a fan-made film by filmmakers Gianmaria Pezzato and Stefano Presti, under Tryangle Films. Centred on how Tom Riddle’s power grew to transform him into You-Know-Who, the film weaves new theories and plots into the existing story to give us a Harry Potter film that fans will definitely enjoy.
Although this wasn’t produced by Hollywood, don’t be fooled – this film is not your usual amateur production. Albeit some poor voice-overs and acting, the special effects and settings are good enough to suck us back into the wonderful wizarding world. If you don’t believe us, just check out the trailer below:

It started off as a Kickstarter campaign but, just when it was picking up momentum, the campaign was taken down by Warner Bros., the distributor of the film franchise. The two film directors met up with Warner Bros. and, after some negotiation, were given the green light to continue the project as long as it was non-profit. Thank goodness.
The beginning of the film was a bit disorienting and confusing due to the lack of context and sudden changes in settings but the film started to become more cohesive as the story progressed, if you ask us. In our attempt to not give any spoilers away, this is all we will say about the plot: it gives us more theories to play with and brood over (in addition to the thousands of fan theories already on the internet) and definitely satiates our desire for anything Harry Potter.
Check out the full film here, or head to Tryangle Film’s YouTube channel for more trailers of the fan film.

Shop These Exclusive Balenciaga Pieces On Net-A-Porter and Mr Porter Today

Justin Timberlake might’ve brought sexy back with his hit single of that exact name in 2009, but Balenciaga’s bringing tawdry 80’s into the fashion spotlight in 2018. If ugly is the new pretty, Balenciaga’s pretty as hell; just recently they released their SS18 campaign visuals, pairing “Weird Al” Yankovic-type models in normcore windbreakers, cracked leather jackets and jean-chino trousers. We undoubtedly live in an era of recycled ideas and to spearhead reclaiming dumpster-diver treasures there’s certainly something unique about them, but with creative director Demna Gvasalia steering its engine we just can’t ever seem to give it too much serious consideration.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BcpFfmSFEiX/?taken-by=balenciaga

What you can take seriously is this — Balenciaga’s just launched a capsule collection in collaboration with Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter to deliver some great classics in colourways that’ll make anyone who sees you wearing them green with envy.

Balenciaga x Mr Porter Exclusive Capsule Collection

balenciagamen

Oversized Printed Fleece-Back Cotton-Blend Jersey Hoodie, Embellished biker jacket, Like A Man Oversized Printed Denim Jacket, Speed Sock Stretch-Knit Slip-On Black Sneakers, Triple S Mesh, Nubuck and Leather Sneakers

Speaking of, this unique Triple S sneakers with lime highlights make the perfect footwear to play fantasy football because unless you didn’t have to save up for a pair of these Hypebeast gems they’re too precious to wreck. If you prefer sleeker architecture, these sock Speed Runners with red double B’s would in our opinion match up to the hoodie in the same shade and logo-form. We jokingly call the men’s leather jacket “Flower Power,” because… It’s great for looking cool on a bike ride or to order beer at three in the afternoon.

Balenciaga x Net-a-Porter Exclusive Capsule Collection

Checked wool and mohair-blend blazer, Oversized printed cotton-jersey hooded top, BB Round embroidered metallic textured-leather bag, Printed Dress, Knife metallic textured-leather mules

Women are finally getting their heyday, and what better way to say women can wear whatever they want with this comically ancient plaid blazer that cinches at the waist and balloons at the hips. Or how about this black ruffly maxi dress with silver chain details that’s hiding a grandma-green and measles-pink dotted interior? It’s always a tough decision between shoes and bags, so why not get this duo in the same colourway — the silver chain crossbody with “Balenciaga” almost tessellated across its surface would look crazy great with these kitten “knife” mules that made headlines in 2017?!

Kat Von D's Latest Launch Brings Us 40 Shades of Vegan Lipstick

Liquid lipsticks were all the rage for the past few years but it seems like we are back to embracing the good ol’ fashion bullet to apply our lip colours.
Re-formulated from the original Studded Kiss Lipsticks, Kat Von D has released her newest line of vegan lipsticks, the Studded Kiss Crème Lipsticks, boasting 40 highly pigmented and creamy shades that come in 3 different finishes. The range offers classic nudes and deep reds, as well as bolder colours like a deep sea foam green, navy blue, black and a stark white shade. KVD also included some of her best-selling OG Everlasting Liquid Lipstick shades, such as Lolita and Sanctuary, creating made-to-match shades in bullet lipstick form.

The new formula is so creamy that users can easily blend different shades together for a more fun and dynamic lip look. Furthermore, the pure white lipstick, White Out, is actually a mixer, which can be used as a base to adjust the tone of your lips before applying other shades on top or mixed into other shades to create your very own customised shade! As shown by the works of art created by KVD’s Artistry Collective, it is no surprise that this line of lipsticks is able to help users effortlessly create the most bold and creative looks with its shade range and formula.

We just find it so amazing how KVD managed to release this 40-shade collection, on top of keeping up with her tattoo clients, working on her music album (she’s a classically-trained pianist) and her other ventures (make up, shoes, collaborations, etc.). Not only does Kat give us quantity (cause who doesn’t want more make up products?), she never compromises on quality, either.
The Kat Von D Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick line is available online at katvondbeauty.com from 12 January and sephora.com from 19 January.

Art From The Streets Takes Over The ArtScience Museum

If you ask us, Banksy’s probably the most well-known street artist. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that he’s a force to reckon with when it comes to street art.

Street art is called street art for a reason. Born in the streets as an attempt to be heard, graffiti could be anything really – from simple signatures to political statements and even random pictures. Sometimes, the tongue-in-cheek artworks are funny enough to put a smile on your face too.

In an attempt to bring it to the galleries, street art expert Magda Danysz has curated a selection of the best street art to be showcased in the ArtScience Museum. It’s about time we started to see street art in a new light, and viewing in an exhibition is certainly taking the soul of street art out of its element that it was created for. Still, we need it to show everyone that Street Art deserves to be appreciated as well.

Starting from the history, the exhibition is split into 6 sections, where you get to explore different facets of street art and how it has evolved from the artists using gritty, urban streets in a bid to be heard to Instagram-worthy walls that we actually seek out today. Here’s a quick lowdown of what to expect with a little bit of background history into street art. It’s not all random drawings and words!

A State Of Decline, Speak Cryptic

Section 1: The Pioneers And The Masters

It’s not easy to pinpoint exactly how graffiti became street art, and when it became more ‘acceptable’ as part of mainstream life. But you have to start somewhere, and you can start off right at the beginning with some of pioneering artists who drove the street artists. It’s quite obvious, but most of the artworks were created with spray paint on different canvases.

Even within street art, there are distinctive artistic styles. Futura, for one, created his own abstract graffiti style by not following the block letters trend. The Futuristic style focused on the creation of atmospheres with blends of colour explosions and pure lines. There’s a beautiful randomness to it that borders on random and purpose; but that’s what makes graffiti so intriguing in the first place.

Section 2: The Advent Of Message

After a point in time, there was only so much words could say. Words eventually gave way to icons and more conceptual designs. Here’s when you’ll start to see the influences of other street communities like skate culture and video gaming. If you’re familiar with the OBEY clothing line, you should know that the designer of the label was a street artist himself who founded the line in aims of spreading more word about his activism.

Other artists also started using graffiti as a way of protesting by manipulating logos and icons. Take the liquidated icons series, which is Sevs answer to the over saturation of the advertising world in the face of technology.

Section 3: Stencil World

Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.

Street artists have been struggling to be heard, and they aren’t going to take something like the authorities cracking down on their public expression so quietly. In response to public bodies cracking down on graffitti, artists turned towards stencilling as it was much quicker. Banksy, our favourite street artist, was a huge purveyor of this method in the 1990s, and you’ll be thrilled to find one of Banksy’s artworks exhibited here as well if you’ve always wanted to see his works in person. Granted, it’s not the same as a mural on the wall, but not all of us can afford a plane ticket to wherever Banksy decides to pop up next.

Section 4: New Writings

One More Picture On My Phone, Rero (2017) – Digital wallpaper print

In a bid to stand out, artists started creating their own typography. Artists wanted to stand out and not be lumped in with all the other anonymous artists out there. More different approaches, with the help of technology, were also developed. Think digital graffiti, wallpaper prints, automatic spray-painting, the options were limitless!

Section 5: Art Of The Context

If you thought that graffiti and street was a very Western thing (which is a pretty reasonable conclusion considering that majority of the works on display are from Western artists – we’ll take another look at the diversity of artists at another time), graffiti and urban art is universal. Even Singapore has its own urban culture scene despite our open rejection of anything rebellious, with the upcoming Aliwal Urban Art Festival showcasing our own local street talent (you’ll be surprised at what’s going on in our streets too!).

Section 6: Getting Up

If we’re going to talk about the history, we need to talk about the newer talents as well. Finish up your tour with some revolutionary artworks. With a mixture of both aesthetics and traditional graffiti practices, street artists are starting to diversify and really carve a name out for themselves. Some murals are impossible to transport to the exhibition, so there will be photos of murals, that are pretty impressive in itself.

The only thing we really wanted? More Bansky please. How can you have an exhibition about street art and only have one artwork by the  legendary artist?

Why You Should Consider Using a Cleansing Powder

While powder cleansers aren’t exactly the newest kids on the beauty block, they sure are having their moment right now. The reason for their recent fame is simple. These cleansing powders provide light exfoliation as they rid your pores of any lingering impurities, making it the perfect second step in your nightly double-cleanse. Let’s not forget how convenient these small sachets of powder are, too.
Since the particles in these dry formulations are a little more gritty than your usual gel cleanser, they’re best suited for those with combination or oily skin. There’s one caveat, though – if your skin’s particularly reactive or you’re suffering from acne, eczema, or rosacea, we’d suggest sticking to that gentle cream / liquid cleanser of yours.
Ahead, we’ve culled a few of the best cleansing powders on the market to ease up your skincare routine as well as your carry-on .

kanebo suisai
Kanebo Suisai Beauty Clear Powder

One of the most popular cleansing powders on the market, Suisai is a water-activated enzyme powder cleanser that does exactly what’s expected of it. The formula features soybean milk filtrate to slough away dead skin cells and sop up excess sebum without ever stripping the skin of moisture. One of our beauty writers took a few capsules for a spin during a short weekend cruise, and while she does like it for the convenience of travelling, she recommends incorporating it to your usual skincare routine once of twice a week too, even if you’re stuck in Singapore.
$27 (32 pieces), available now at BHG Welcia in Bugis Junction.

KANEBO
Kanebo Refreshing Powder Wash

Trust Kanebo to ride on the success of its Suisai Beauty Clear Powder. It has now welcomed convenient cleansing powder capsules to its Chrono Beauty range, a skincare line that’s all about tailoring an effective routine to combat environmental factors. This formula lathers to a soft foam, featuring protease and apricot extract to remove dead skin cells and clogged pore to leave your skin feeling clean yet moisturised.
$49 (0.4g × 32 capsules), available from May 2018 at Kanebo counters.

DHC
DHC Face Wash Powder

This fine, silky powder from DHC may feel like a light exfoliant for the skin, but when mixed with water, it actually turns into a lovely, dense foam. The formula not only contains protease enzymes to help dissolve dead skin cells, it also features honey and sodium hyaluronate to soothe and hydrate, making this powder wash the most ideal for normal to sensitive skin types.
US$12.90, available at dermstore.com.

fancl
FANCL Facial Washing Powder

As with most cleansing powders out there, FANCL’s Facial Washing Powder turns into a rich foam quickly once you add some water to it. The combination of agar and rice starch gently lifts dirt and impurities, rids your complexion of clogged pores, and helps to prep the skin for the subsequent steps in your skincare routine.
US$21, available at FANCL stores.

clinique
Clinique Fresh Pressed Renewing Powder Cleanser

Not all cleansing powders contain active ingredients, which is what makes Clinique’s version a standout amidst the lather. This ultra-fine powder is packed with a high concentration of vitamin C for maximum brightening effect, so you can expect to see a refinement in texture as well as a radiant glow. You can definitely use this non-stripping formula in the mornings too if your skin’s in dire need of a wake-up call.
$39 (0.5g x 28 sachets), available from Clinique counters, Sephora, and Sephora.sg

tatcha
Tatcha Classic Rice Enzyme Powder

Believe us when we say that this is the gold standard for cleansing powders of today. Tatcha’s philosophy takes after a geisha’s approach to beauty, which includes the use of rice bran in powder cleansers. The natural antioxidants and skin-soothing enzymes you’ll find in this blend is the key to its efficacy, and when that’s combined with Tatcha’s trademark anti-aging ingredient HADASEI-3 and gentle papaya enzymes, this cleansing powder will leave your skin baby smooth after you’ve rinsed it off.
US$65, available at Tatcha.com.
