Less is not always more, and sometimes having more options is better. Which is why we’re jumping on Laneige’s line of two tone products that comes in eyeshadows, blushers and lipsticks. Two tone eyeshadows and blushers are easy to use, and makes application really easy especially for beginners who might not be well-versed enough in makeup to pick the complementary colours. Laneige’s lipsticks, or lip bars as they call it, deserve a whole other mention by themselves.
Here’s the quick lowdown on these magical two tones bars from Laneige – they are a cross between a lipstick and a lip balm, with each bar consisting of two complementary colours for a gradient look. The colours might look strange in the tube, but rest assured that the resulting look when the lip bar is applied will make you wonder why you’ve never tried it sooner. With these babies, you can easily get natural ombre lips without spending too much time pairing and blending colours. The balmy texture has gotten sheer and matte updates, and both were hits in the beauty community. It’s pretty hard to find an actual matte lipsticks that won’t dry out your lips, never mind creating an ombre look out of matte lipsticks.
The original quartet from the Laniege x YCH collection: No. 1 Burgundy Mood, No. 2 Red Cashmere, No. 3 Powershoulder Pink, No. 4 Fitting Rose
The only downside is that you won’t be able to get it in the limited edition packaging that the first four colours came in. You’ll have to make do with the standard rectangle-ish pale pink tube. But with all these new gorgeous pairings to play with, we’re more than happy to make do with it! Check out all the new swatches:
Top row from left to right: No. 5 Sunshine Coral, No. 6 Red Velvet, No. 7 Apricot Candy Bottom row from left to right: No. 8 Rose Layering, No. 9 Cherry Milk, No. 10 Soft Knit
Begone, dry and cracked lips!
The LANEIGE Two Tone Matte Lip Bar, $36, in 10 different shades is now available at all LANEIGE boutiques and counters, LAZADA and ZALORA.
The 2018 Golden Globes proved to be an empowering and heartwarming awards show: Oprah gave an inspiring speech as the first black woman to receive the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award and a sea of black, as most attendees showing wore black to show support for the #TimesUp Campaign.
The campaign, launched by 300 actresses, writers and directors, has raised US$13 million which would be used to fund legal support for both male and female victims of sexual harassment at work. The recent resounding protest against sexual harassment in Hollywood, was sparked by the outing of renowned film producer, Harvey Weinstein, alongside other high profile celebrities like Kevin Spacey, Terry Richardson, David Blaine and Ben Affleck. The sheer mass of sexual harassment accounts, that sometimes date back by more than 10 years, prove that Hollywood (and society) is rife with inequality – people who think they are so powerful that they can get away with such actions and those who fear standing up for themselves due to the consequences for going against someone with such high influence.
After decades of ill-treatment, time is up for those that have used their authority and status to take advantage of others. The 2018 Golden Globes not only showed the strength of support for the movement but also gave exposure to everyday women who have been leading battles against inequality and ill-treatment, as well. Some actresses brought women activists along as their dates for the Golden Globes, giving them time and exposure to share about their causes. Here are some of the activists who were introduced to audiences yesterday.
Ai-Jen Poo (accompanied Meryl Streep)
Ai-Jen Poo is the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and recipient of the 2014 MacArthur “Genius” Award, which commends those who have brought exceptional creativity to diverse people, places, and social challenges. She fights for the protection of domestic workers, most of whom are women. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Streep stated that “power imbalance” has led to abuse in both the entertainment industry and in the lives of many domestic workers. Poo said that she hopes that the show of support at the Golden Globes lets people know that industries are united in creating workplaces where people feel safe, where people can work with dignity and that everyone has a part to play in the movement.
2. Billie Jean King (with Emma Stone)
A legend among tennis fans, Billie Jean King is the former World No. 1 with 39 Grand Slam titles and 20 Wimbledon Championship titles, paving the way for equality in sports. In 1973, she beat former Wimbledon Champion Bobby Riggs (yes, a man) after the chauvinistic tennis player challenged her to a match. By winning the match, King proved that women are not any lesser than men, even in sports. She founded the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Women’s Tennis Association in America. The bio-pic, Battle of The Sexes, conveys the essence of the events leading up to the historical tennis match between King and Riggs, and stars Emma Stone as King and Steve Carell as Riggs.
3. Tarana Burke (with Michelle Williams)
Tarana Burke founded the “Me Too” movement in 2007, 10 years after she was left speechless by a 13-year-old as she recounted events of sexual abuse. She started a non-profit organisation, Just Be Inc. to provide resources to help victims of sexual abuse and assault, “focused on wealth, well being and wholeness of young women of colour”. In 2017, the hashtag #MeToo gained traction after Alyssa Milano promoted it in a tweet to show solidarity and the massive scale of sexual abuse in society, especially after countless accounts of sexual harassment by Harvey Weinstein. Burke is also the Senior Director at Girls for Gender Equity.
Marai Larasai (with Emma Watson)
Marai Larasai is the Executive Director of Imkaan (UK), a black feminist network organisation. She is a co-chair of End Violence Against Women coalition – the largest coalition of organisations working to eradicate violence against women and girls. She was invited by Emma Watson, a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and prominent advocator for equal rights, promoting the “HeForShe” movement at the campaign’s special event.
Although they aren’t activists like the women mentioned above, Actresses Debra Messing and Eva Longoria deserve a special mention for calling out E! Entertainment on their own red carpet show!
While being interviewed by E! host Giuliana Rancic, Messing uses the example of Catt Sadler’s resignation from E! after learning that her male colleague was being paid double her salary.
Eva Longoria also criticised E! during her interview with Ryan Seacrest. Anyone who has a voice can use their platform and stand up for those who are wronged.
The Golden Globes is the first award show of the season, and with so many more to go, like the Grammys and Oscars, we hope that the momentum carries on and we finally see a change in our society. It’s a war that humanity has engaged in since the beginning of time. It’s also a war that’s unlikely to end anytime soon. Yes, people. We’re talking about the war against bugs. Swatters, sprays, coils, oils, and newspapers have aided humanity in this long and desperate fight, serving as useful weapons for the annihilation of pests.
But sadly, they’ve proven to be inadequate. Bugs like mosquitoes and flies still roam amok in our homes, infiltrating our peace, riddling us with deadly diseases, and just being an overall pain in the ass. Thankfully, not all hope is lost. New bug elimination methods are being planned all the time, with the latest and greatest being Bug-A-Salt.
Bug-A-Salt is basically a plastic gun that allows you to pelt those darned pests with bullets of pressurised table salt, letting you unleash your inner Rambo in a safe and humane way. Each reload carries 80 shots, so there’s plenty of ammo to fire away. Plus, there’s even freakin’ laser sight, so you can mow down bugs, SWAT team style.
Bug-A-Salt may not be the end-all solution for exterminating annoying bugs, but it’s a fun tool nonetheless, and judging from its ebay page, is proving to be quite the hit. So far, there has been 100% buyer satisfaction from 2,029 units sold, and for the price of US$39.95, it’s quite the steal too.
If you’re interested in scoring one, you can get it here (Bug-A-Salt doesn’t ship to Singapore, however). Who knows, your house could become bug-free, and you’ll gain some valuable pinpoint, hitman accuracy as well. For more information, visit bugasalt.com. Images: Bug-A-Salt
If doesn’t really matter if you aren’t that into pop culture per se; you’ll still be able to recognise icons from modern life here and there in this latest exhibition, Instant Fame. The tongue-in-cheek artworks are a hilarious poke at all our current consumerist and capitalistic ways and the ridiculously unhealthy obsessions we have with pop icons, logos and celebrities. Don’t believe me? Just think back to the ridiculous queues for the Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration, anything Hello Kitty related, and even for discount stores like Don Don Donki where people queue up for over an hour for sweet potatoes.
The current lineup sees Singapore-based artists Billy Ma, Stefanie Hauger, Leo Liu Xuanqi, Andre Tan, Justin Lee, TR853-1 (read as Traceone), and Iskander Walen as they put together some of their best pop artworks for Instant Fame. This is probably the first major pop art exhibition in Singapore by Singaporean artists, and the artworks are actually quite legit. We can totally see them appearing on our Instagram stories. From paintings to sculptures to prints, you’ll be bombarded by tons of art like you’ve never seen it before.
Porcelain Boy by Andre Tan
By Leo Liu Xuanqi
Just like what the name suggests, you’ll instantly be able to recognise most of the icons in the artworks even if you couldn’t name them. Get your cameras ready, because you won’t want to forget this exhibition anytime soon.

We don’t know about you, but some of these pieces make the perfect present for those who love quirky artworks. The term “diffusion lines” doesn’t sit well with many brands — it’s why Miuccia Prada moved Miu Miu to Paris Fashion Week, Donatella Versace has reinvented Versus into its own beast and Proenza Schouler have been adamant against terming PSWL just that. Off-White, the latest luxury brand to venture into “diffusion line” territory has proposed an alternative to creating price-friendlier buying options: Virgil Abloh, pegged as a god of modern streetwear design, just launched capsule collection “For All” available only in selected Off-White boutiques worldwide (we’ve already scoured the Internet, you can’t get it anywhere else). Selection-wise, it features four graphic T-shirts (USD95) and four hoodies (USD170) branded with its signature diagonal stripes and quotation marks.
Abloh, who just last year collaborated with Nike to re-imagine its classics, is not one to shy away from acknowledging his appeal to youth culture through his often aspirational prices. With “For All” he comments on the Off-White aesthetic, “equally it can be relevant at an affordable price point.” We sure hope so. For a man whose personal inspiration is drawn from sportswear and street spirit, “For All” is finally a collection we won’t have to save up for.
Meanwhile, here’re some Off-White pieces still lingering in our shopping list.
Red carpets have traditionally been a celebratory to-do at award ceremonies like the Emmys or Oscars where women especially would plaster their faces in cakes of paint and squeeze their exquisitely teeny waists into the seams of the most glamorous haute couture Marchesa or Giambattista Vali. Even if you don’t fancy sitting through hours of celebrity banter watching its live stream or taped versions, however, this year’s Golden Globes’ buzz has been snaking its way through social media even beyond those who chase such shows to check up on how well their favourite TV series and films of the year that’s passed fared among their peers.
So it was impossible to miss the memo that everyone was to turn up all in black. It was as though Hollywood showed up to the death of the Harvey Weinstein’s, not just of the entertainment industry but of all sectors. This was planned as an act of solidarity to infuse meaning to an otherwise heartily entertaining evening as part of the #TimesUp movement, which, in less than a few weeks amalgamated the sentiments of all other social-media run movements promoting female empowerment that preceded it. Even watching the broadcast sent chills down our spines. We definitely didn’t mind the repeated interview question alluding to the nominees’ outfits — as is feminism, everyone has and deserves a different point of view but ultimately supports the same cause.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN5HV79_8B8
If there was one woman to sum up the evening, it’s Oprah. As the first black woman to win the Cecil B. de Mille Award, Oprah’s acceptance speech could’ve been a time to tribute her lifelong contribution to TV and film, but of course she was overcome by the power of the room and the earthquake women all over the Internet have created from the sum of their individual voices, exposing the corrupt men who’ve threatened their careers, opportunities and lives if they didn’t give in to their sexual demands. As a racial minority, gender unequal and powerhouse whose career in Hollywood spans the beginnings and ends of many others, Oprah’s wisdom reverberated throughout the Beverly Hilton ballroom, much to the tears of many men and women clad in full black suits and gowns.
Maybe social media has ruined privacy and raised a microphone operating 24/7 for anyone who knows how to use it, but founder of the now monumental #MeToo movement Tarana Burke couldn’t have been the first to break the silence against her sexual assaulter without it. Sexual harassment certainly wasn’t invented in 2017, but either due to its taboo or system of being perpetrated by men who own the power to silence their victims, many simply couldn’t speak out from fear of likely backlash.
But as many have now witnessed the many idols of Hollywood who’ve shared their experiences — Rose McGowan, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Gabrielle Union, Gwenyth Paltrow, Evan Rachel Wood, Cara Delevingne, Ashley Judd, Laura Dern, Anna Faris, Ilana Glazer, just to name a few — their voices have been the straw to break the camel’s back on sexual misconduct and the gender oppression motivating it.
Fashion was not the only change to the Golden Globes. Celebrities were also encouraged to invite activists as their plus-ones who could not only more articulately verbalise the various causes supporting women but showcase the often unrepresented heroes championing empowerment. It’s important we know Emma Watson from her portfolio of activism as the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and remember Meryl Streep’s empowering acceptance speech when she was presented the Cecil B. de Mille Award last year, but to spotlight grassroots and their leaders are equally important and often overlooked.
Of course, it wouldn’t be an award ceremony worth watching without a good laugh. We’ve had controversial Ricky Gervais and sisterly duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler emcee The Globes in past years, but viewers were probably never as nervous for a host to do well as at this year’s run. As Seth Meyers of Late Night fame admits, taking on the task feels like being “the first dog they shot into outer space.” And for those who’re wondering, of course it’s okay to let a man host such a volatile room of attendees — after all, it’s men who need to play a role in this feminist movement for any real progress to enact. If you loved Moschino and Sephora’s bear-themed make up line, you are in for a treat! Over the weekend, Moschino’s creative director, Jeremy Scott, announced his latest collaboration on Instagram – a music-inspired make up collection with M.A.C, which includes 3 different items and major throwback packaging. When you look at them, you’ll feel like you’re back in the 80’s and 90’s again.
After working together for Moschino fashion shows numerous times , M.A.C approached Scott with the idea of a limited edition makeup collaboration. He instantly knew that he wanted the collection to be music-themed as he saw music as a powerful energy that could alter and shape the atmosphere of a room and effortlessly convey the feelings, thoughts and personality of its creator.
Whether it’s designing for big stars, like Miley Cyrus and Madonna, or working with brands like Adidas and UGG, there is no doubt that Jeremy Scott is very in-demand and super busy. Music plays a huge role in his life – as a source of inspiration (he listens to musicians’ songs while creating looks for them) or just to set the perfect mood for work. When sketching and coming up with new bold, fun and creative works, music is always in the background as he works.
M.A.C X Jeremy Scott Acoustica cheek palette US$35
The cheek palette is packaged in the form of a CD, bringing us back to the days of CD-Roms and Floppy disks. The detail on the packing is impeccable – down to the Sharpie scribbles and bubble-dotted ‘i’s. The palette consists of one champagne-coloured highlighter, a bronzer and a slightly coral-toned pink blush.
M.A.C X Jeremy Scott Future lip palette US$35
The collection also includes a 9-shade lip palette that is cleverly packaged in the form of cassette tape, finished off with red handwriting for the real throwback feels. Remember the days where we had to flip the cassette tapes from A-side to B-side to be able to listen to the whole album? Ah, memories. Did we mention this palette comes with a mirror too?
M.A.C X Jeremy Scott Lo-Fi eyeshadow palette US$75
The main feature of the collection, in our opinion, is the eyeshadow palette that comes in a technicolour boombox! Packaged as the ultimate music player from the good ol’ days, the palette comes with 29 shades, ranging from browns to purples, to help you create any eye look you need.
This limited edition collection will only be available at select M.A.C stores and online on M.A.C, from 8 February. We’re not sure if our local M.A.C stores are on the list but let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that we can get our hands on it! After all, it’s not everyday that you can get something by Jeremy Scott for a price like this. The M.A.C X Jeremy Scott collection will be available at select M.A.C stores and on maccomestics.com, from February 8. For more information, visit M.A.C.

Just in case you were wondering, this isn’t some hipster or beauty product trying to capitalise on the hype of smoking pot. KANA, a Korean beauty brand has launched its version of a Korean sleeping mask infused with the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis. If the mask actually works, this pretty much signals a new age of skincare.
If you ask us, Korean skincare lately has become way more revolutionised compared to American skincare thanks to the millions of dollars that the Korean government has been pumping into research and development. In simpler English for us beauty and makeup fanatics, it just means that there’s always newer and better products for us to play around with! This isn’t the first time that cannabis has been used for its medicinal properties. Sure, it gets you high if you smoke it in the form of weed, but research has shown that cannabis has anti-ageing properties, with many beauty pharmaceutical companies infusing it into their skincare products.
Don’t worry, this is 100% legal
Back to KANA and their weed-infused mask. We all know how strict weed laws are (especially in our little red dot), but you can be reassured that the Lavender CBD Sleeping Mask is made with cannabidiol, the second most abundant cannabinoid in weed which also happens to be the legal extract from hemp. Besides CBD (aka cannabidiol derived from industrial hemp), the mask also contains 28 other botanical ingredients like hyaluronic acid and lavender oil. All ingredients are natural ingredients, which means that your face will thank you for this mask, which helps brighten your skin and achieve that natural glow that Koreans are famous for.
According to Broadly who managed to get their hands on a bottle of this mask, it works wonders. It took a while for the sleeping mask to work, and you need to have the dedication to use it everyday too, but the writer who tried it claims that it’s totally worth the effort. Even without makeup, her skin was glowing, and her dark under eye circles were reduced – her skin was super chilled out. We think that the soothing scents of lavender also helps you to relax more so that the sleeping mask can work its magic!
It looks like you’re not going to get high, but you can get a super glowy and dewy complexion which is honestly a much better deal in our opinion. KANA ships all over the world, including Singapore, so if you’ve been on the lookout for a natural face mask for glowing skin, you might want to just give this a try.
If you really think about it, cannabis isn’t really as extreme or outrageous. We’ve heard of stars using placenta and even skin-burning products in their beauty routine. Weed? Pfft, it’s nothing!
There are two groups of people in the world: those who aren’t Hypebeasts and those who are. If you belong to the latter, we have good news for you! Streetwear brand, Stüssy, is currently having a huge online sale and almost every single item is being sold at a discount!
Although the online store doesn’t ship directly to Singapore, there’s always Ezbuy to help us make full use of online sales. The last time we checked, almost half of the items were already sold out, so hurry and head on to the website before all your favourite styles are gone! For more information, visit Stüssy

One of the most mundane tasks in the world is packing clothes. Folding and slotting garments in a suitcase just isn’t very exciting, let alone fuss-free. It’s all too easy to miss out on a sweatshirt here, or a cap there, and we’d much rather skip the boring parts and just hop on the plane already.
But you know what’s worse than putting clothes in a suitcase? Taking them out and putting them back inside again for the return trip home. The hassle is something every lazy traveller could do without, although it is an unenviable, inevitable process. Till now, that is. Enter ShelfPack – a two-in-one suitcase that doubles up as your own convenient, on-the-go closet.
Disguised as a regular roller bag, ShelfPack opens up to reveal stacked shelves that make packing a whole lot easier for disorganised folk. Yes, folding is still a necessary chore over here, but hey, at least you can organise your clothes neatly, and not have to crumple your favourite shirt by cramming it in the teeniest corner of your suitcase.
Invented by Ken McKaba, a software engineer, the ShelfPack suitcase comes with four built-in “shelves” that are supported by a retractable frame. When fully extended, the shelves reach a height of about 42-inches, so there’s more than enough space to fit enough clothing for a long vacation. Packing situation, solved.
Now all ShelfPack needs are tiny robot arms fitted to its sides to help us fold our clothes automatically, especially when it comes to those thick wooly winter jackets that are really hard to get down to a smaller size. But we suppose this will do for now. It is after all the biggest development in the luggage industry since roller wheels were introduced.
Do be warned, though. The price of convenience is not going to come cheap. You can get one ShelfPack suitcase for $602 via Ubuy’s website, although you may just want to put in a little more effort when packing for your trip, and get a cheaper, but less versatile suitcase instead. For more information, visit shelfpack.com. Images: ShelfPack
When it was announced that fashion duo of some thirty-odd years Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri were separating ways — Piccioli to be sole creative director at couture house Valentino and Chiuri to graduate on to becoming Dior’s pioneer female creative director — the fashion press scrambled to fabricate a war between the two’s outcomes at their respective posts. Naturally Chiuri’s sensational appointment would create more excitement from pushing a discussion of gender politics, but Piccioli’s latest endeavour at ready-to-wear has generated a newfound interest in the luxury fashion house which iconised its imperial red evening gowns and punk-embellished stud accessories.
Historically employed for its haute bespoke services, Valentino’s almost never been a beacon of trend-fashion compared to peers like Prada or Versace. It’s not necessarily a bad thing for a brand which aims towards timeless elegance, but as athleticism infiltrates the fashion zeitgeist more and more, however, it’s increasingly impossible to ignore a mainstay that even rich kids want to be a part of. And if there’s one person to invite sportswear into his collections without compromising the codes of classicism of the esteemed house, it’s Piccioli.
Valentino SS18 Mens Accessories
Here, we spot an array of intellectually ageless colour-blocked totes, bumbags and trainers of bright primary warm pops with subdued neutrals as though to satisfy a man’s sartorial needs both during the week and that bleeding into the weekend. While these SS18 accessories are a definite entry into the youthful spheres occupied by labels like Fendi and Marni, they still retain the Valentino DNA with bohemian aztec embroidery around the edges of bags and fringed nubuck that resemble bangs hairstyle on mesh runners.
If you’ve everything money can buy on earth, perhaps looking at the stars in the night sky’s the only diamonds you can aspire to own. Or perhaps the moon’s nearer (and by distance more liveable) so you’d prefer a trip there for your honeymoon. The moon’s exactly where Piccioli drew his inspiration from in his SS18 womenswear collection, which evidently combines the romantic glitter of outer space and modernity of sportswear needed to venture intergalactically in the current era. Of course, the Valentino woman wants an evening gown to strut around an al fresco bar with her lawyer friends and their uppity spouses on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night; which featured as the show progressed.
Valentino SS18 Womens Accessories
Even the most jaded princesses smile when they vacation on a tropical island. These Valentines are just the perfect modern mix-up of youthful exuberance infused to classic silhouettes. Piccioli’s tapped into the logo-mania syndrome with his “VLTN” tees and bags, the new “nude” with his PVC double-layer quilt top-handles, transparent heel panels and sock-trainer cut-outs, but retained some style-principles like the bow pumps and stud details. The ultraviolet bumbag has straps that harness around the wearer’s torso, which is a bold look we can’t wait to see how style stars will rock.
Urban Decay sure knows its way around a makeup palette. From their red-hot Naked Heat Palette to the Heavy Metals Palette and the prismatic Distortion Palette, the irreverent beauty brand killed it in 2017, and by the looks of their latest collaboration, they’re about the slay 2018 all the same. Feast your eyes on the new Urban Decay x Kristen Leanne collection.
If you’re unfamiliar with Kristen Leanne and her bold oeuvre, she’s a beauty influencer who’s best known to nearly 800k Instagram followers for a number of things: her preference for bright colours when it comes to makeup, her cool “arctic fox” hair, that badass mermaid scale-esque neck tattoo, and of course, her infectious personality. We got to know her a little better when the neon eyeliner trend dominated the beauty scene earlier last year. It’s really not that difficult to see why she’s Urban Decay’s top pick when they decided to collaborate with a beauty influencer for the first time.
Kaleidoscope Dream Palette, $65
Let’s start with the most highly-anticipated product amongst the trio of palettes. The Kaleidoscope Dream palette left us with heart eyes at first sight – it features 11 vivid brights we came to expect, from a deep blue shimmer named “TRM” to a shocking green shade “Lime Time” and a shade inspired by her favourite beer “Corona”. There’s plenty to play with when it comes to this palette, and thanks to UD’s signature pigment-infused system, those colours really pop upon application.
Glowgetters would know that there’s nothing like a gleaming highlighter to top off any makeup look, and this right here could be the ultimate highlighter palette. We’d wear the gold-toned shades from the Beauty Beam Highlighter Palette individually, or blend them altogether for a megawatt glow. Its micronised, jet-milled formula translates to a silky, featherlight texture that goes on as smooth as the highlighter you’ll find in Urban Decay’s Naked Flushed palettes.
Daydream Eyeshadow Palette, $45
She may have carved a niche with her incredible rainbow makeup tutorials, but when she’s not experimenting with colour, Kristen creates the dreamiest neutral eye looks. Needless to say, she’s crafted a neutral palette with 5 shades when she’s looking to achieve matte perfection. As with every palette in the collection (and every UD palette ever), each shade from the Daydream Eyeshadow Palette is buttery to the touch and blends beautifully on the lids.
There have been multiple movies that touched on topics like schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder, such as A Beautiful Mind (2001) and, more recently, Split (2017). However, in the art-film Manifesto (2015), Cate Blanchett’s character doesn’t suffer from any mental disorder. Rather, the actress convincingly portrays 13 extremely distinct, and sometimes conflicting, characters in just one 90 minute film. The characters range from a heavily-bearded homeless man, a surrealist puppeteer and a prim and proper elementary school teacher. What’s more astounding, is that the whole film was filmed in just 12 days. Usually, performers would require weeks, if not months, to successfully switch between and embody the nuances of a character’s personality. This display of her talent, versatility and expertise makes it no surprise that Blanchett was recently elected as the new president of the jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The art-history inspired film – written, produced and directed by German artist/film-maker Julian Rosefeldt – was initially meant to be a multi-screen film, with all 13 non-linear episodes (each featuring one character) playing simultaneously while viewers walk through the exhibition at their own pace. The film resurfaced at the 2017 Sundance Festival, as a 90-minute film version and continued to receive high acclaims from critics.
Written as a series of monologues, Blanchett’s lines are a collage of quotes from 20th-century art and political manifestos, such as excerpts from the Dada Manifesto by Tristan Tzara and The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels. We know, it sounds very heavy and intimidating but fret not. The scenes are ingeniously situated in the perfect settings – as part of a tv news report or while saying grace at the dining table – which make the film, surprisingly, humorous.
Unfortunately, we are not even sure if the art-film would be released in Singapore theatres but if you ever get the chance, don’t hesitate to catch this one-of-a-kind art piece. Even if you aren’t a film buff, you’ll still be thoroughly amazed by Blanchett’s extraordinary performance. Header image: Chapter Film

We still can’t get over the Disney classic, Beauty And The Beast. Ever since last year’s live action remake of the 1991 animated film of the same name, there has been many Beauty And The Beast inspired collections from shoes to capsule collections and (of course) makeup collections. Obviously we went a little overboard fangirling over every single collaboration and we were having trouble keeping our money in our wallets (although the massive shipping fees did make it a little easier).
Amongst our finds was Cute Press, an indie Thai beauty brand that carries the most magical Disney themed collections amongst all their other makeup products. You can get their Disney collection with free shipping as long as you stay in Singapore, thanks to AIMElab. *Silently screaming* For now, we’re just gonna lust after the Beauty And The Beast Collection, although we have our eyes on their upcoming lipstick line featuring Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
Beauty And The Beast True Beauty Palette, $38.90 each Enchanted (left), Intelligent (right)
A simple yet gorgeous face palette with eight neutral shades that you can use as eyeshadows, blushers and highlighters, bring out your natural beauty with these pink and cream colours. The palette also comes with both eyeshadow applicators and mini brushes so that you can touch up your makeup at any time of the day (or night).
Beauty And The Beast Comfort Matte Liquid Lip, $19.90 Left to right: Head Over Heels, True Love, Something There, My Beast
We don’t know which one is prettier – the packaging or the colour. With rosy pinks and a darker muted red, the lipstick has a matte finish. The lipstick claims to moisturise your lips too, so you that your lips don’t get beastly cracks as the day progresses. Each of the lipsick packaging is different, as they are inspired by the name and colour. It looks like the illustrations were inspired by the 2017 live movie of the same name as Belle reminds us strongly of Emma Watson, who played the character in the movie.
Beauty And The Beast Comfort Matte Liquid Lip Box Set, $68.90
If you really want all four shades, you can opt for the boxed set, which will save you about $10. The only downside is that you don’t get the cute little packaging illustrations, instead you get a boxed set with the same illustration on the ‘My Beast’ lipstick. It’s a real hard choice here.
Beauty And The Beast Romantic Light Highlighter, $15.90

There is a constant factor in routines all over the world before a night out: the cracking open of an ice-cold beer. Pre-gaming has always been, and will always be one of the best ways to start a night, and the earlier it’s done, the better. Sad thing then that the shower – an absolutely necessary activity, always get in the way.
There is but one solution. Drinking while you get that bath on. Though it must be said that that’s not always the best way to enjoy your booze (or to get clean for that matter). Enter Swedish craft brewery PangPang’s and creative agency Snask’s new drink that promises to revolutionise both drinking and showering sessions – the more than appropriately named “Shower Beer”.
A sweet and strong pale ale that comes in a neat 18 cl bottle with a strength of 10% ABV, the Shower Beer is designed specifically for consuming in the shower. Instead of downing one long can of your favourite Carlsberg or Asahi brew, where the situation of warm beer becomes inevitable, the Shower Beer can be finished in three quick gulps.
But an immediate hit of potent booze isn’t the only benefit. The Shower Beer amazingly doubles up as a hair conditioner too (yes, that’s freaking right)! Founder Fredrik Tunedal actually designed the recipe to be beneficial for a person’s hair, but despite that convenience, we think we’ll be sticking to our regular hair care products, thank you very much.
So what was the inspiration behind this heavenly beverage? Tunedal told Munchies, “Looking through the hashtag #showerbeer, it’s easy to see that people all over the world love that feeling of a hot shower and an ice cold beer. I just wanted to try to optimise the experience by trying to customise a brew for this glorious occasion.”
But the important question is; what does it taste like? What kind of beer could handle the dual properties of both beer and hair conditioner? Well, according to Tunedal, the beer is “heavily hopped with Citra”, and has a “citrusy, soapy, and somewhat herbal profile” – a smorgasbord of weirdly contrasting characteristics if there were any.
If you like to try this baby out, tough luck buddy. The beer was unfortunately only produced for the Swedish market. However, after selling out its first batch, the creators are looking for distributors outside Scandinavia so that the brew can eventually be sold worldwide.
So, there’s still hope at the end of the tunnel. The day where you can chug beer and wash yourself at the same time could be coming sooner than you know. Now, where’s that six-pack? For more information, visit snask.com. Images: Snask
